If it shipped with Oreo I'd have bought it as soon as it went on sale, I just don't have faith that they'll support it for long when they haven't even shipped it with the current version. But before I dive into some high vocab scripting, let me give you a brief background.

Oneplus Mobile Price List 2018

So their only new update was Oreo. Developers don't get to decide what a bug is - the requirements do. Oh… and if you plan to buy oneplus after all these little drawbacks and loads of plus points. Dash Charge Dash Charge is right up there with the fastest and best quick charging options available on any flagship at any price. The sheer amount of ram and topline CPUs, will make it easy to keep going with custom roms.

Oh… and if you plan to buy oneplus after all these little drawbacks and loads of plus points. And most people will be fine with the next OS update coinciding with their next phone purchase. I know I was able to use both variants of the OnePlus 5 with no performance issues.

They said the yellow is normal. When I was in robotics back in High School, I was head of the programming team, and everyone joked that I could fix almost any hardware issue with a software fix. Wake me up when this shit is fixed man. Their phones are supported exactly as described above. There are no heavy customisations or preloaded apps to slow things down and the canvas is clean for users to craft their own experience. There were multiple touchscreen issues.

26.01.2018 - It's not like no company in the US has ever released contradictory statements in consecutive days. The battery life is incredible, dash charging is literally the most 'lit thing' about this phone. Still have a question? I'm not sure if that will be the case with all the changes they've made in the Oreo beta. And most people will be fine with the next OS update coinciding with their next phone purchase. This is the classic disconnect between engineering and marketing. Engineering makes a product that has a few bugs, however if you try to fix everything out of the gate you will never release a product.

Then marketing takes your product and makes all kinds of promises without consulting engineering. This is just turned up with Oneplus since they seem to have mastered the hype machine but don't know when to keep their mouths quiet to come up with an official response.

What I got from the original statement was that it wasn't a hardware defect, because they had already acknowledged that the the issue exists and had said a fix was coming. I really don't think the people at OnePlus philosophically care much about customer support or experience much beyond getting people to buy their devices.

Apple for a fact cares. Their support is unrivaled. I suspect Google cares a lot, they just don't have the infrastructure. That may be true, but OnePlus specifically is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for.

If I paid that much money for anything, I would be fucking pissed if a manufacturer tried to blow me off. In glad OnePlus acknowledges the problem, but knowing their history of making promises they can't keep; I don't know what to expect.

I'm not sure I see the irony. That's exactly my point. I could have saved a few quid and got a OnePlus phone and open myself up to a shitshow of issues and non existent or contradictory support, but I decided to get a Pixel and I've not even had a single minor issue: What do you mean!?

I only had to put in 3 support tickets and wait 8 months for them to finally fix an issue with my Google Wallet account not being attached to my email address. I paid for mine Yet, people actually defend this company.

Y'all just can't admit when you've been duped by another Chinese company lol. Every time I see a post like this it reinforces my decision not to go with OnePlus again. The devices are great I loved my OP3 if you get a good one, but their poor quality assurance and customer service are not worth it.

Pixel 2 XL in the past. I wasn't expecting less. Any other attitude would have been unaceptable. Either this or a massive Samsung-like recall. I really doubt this is a software issue.

Turn your phone upside down and try scrolling. You'll get the same jelly effect, although likely a bit less pronounced. I dont see how that can be the case.

Wouldnt it just be like scrolling up when holding the phone normally? I see it on S8. It's not very disturbing though. Try increasing the font size and scroll back and forth in a medium pace while holding the phone upside down.

That did the trick. But wow, thats interesting. Why wouldn't it be like this when scrolling upwards normally? I was able to do it, upside down. I turn my phone upside down and scrolling looks the same as always.

How could that possibly cause any difference? Refresh shearing is a common problem if you are updating a display that does progressive updating at a pace faster than the fresh rate. Its the reason tech like G-Sync exists, and techniques like double-buffer rendering.

Given they are saying its a software fix, the odds are the display driver was not syncing the rendering pipeline's refresh of the display with the actual refresh of the hardware pixels themselves.

Some LCDs can have that too. My M8 uses an LCD panel but there is still a slight jelly effect when upside down. I can't get mine to do it, but I wonder if that has to do with the Keyone's shorter screen.

It's because of how your brain is wired and where it expects the text to be. The affect is the same in either orientation. IMHO it's a bad attempt at smoothing the experience. Yeah all this news kinda sucks, but I'm seriously in love with this phone.

I've never had a device that feels so high quality software and hardware. Man it seems like every other one plus device is pretty great. So, we can safely assume 6 is great I think. I'm surprised that their phones keep increasing in price despite their iffy RMA process.

My dad's friend had to deal with sudden touchscreen issues on his OPO and he had a tough time sending it to OPO for repair. Can someone please explain this to me? Or is OnePlus simply pulling random statements just to satisfy their customers?

Because if this is the cause. This is shady af. Anyone who can still return this should definitely do so. How are they going to fix it with a software update? Perhaps increase the refresh rate to lessen the jelly effect?

Support told me yesterday "We are aware of this issue and already reported this with our ROM Team and currently working on it". Yeeeeaaahh not going to buy a phone from this company.

I'd rather go Essential Will wait for pixel. I know OP has been a part of quite a few f ups but hammering down on them for every small thing is uncalled for honestly. Not sure why you're getting downvoted The first comment is saying that there's no hardware defect, and that the screens are the same as on other devices.

Those 2 comments don't really contradict, they're just answering slightly different things. How can they say it's normal when only certain devices got the problem.

Regardless, it's good that they're taking actions. If you constantly brag about being cool, then people will have fun laughing at you once there is evidence that you are not as cool as you claimed to be.

Every company claims about them being cool. That's how marketing works. They stopped using the word flagship killer after the OnePlus 2, but everyone keeps bringing it up.

Thing is, talking about them is what made them big in the first place, fueling the fire. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. Log in or sign up in seconds.

Yes P is next year. My point is that it doesn't get support for a year My point is that it's not one year of updates. The 5T will be effectively updated to the most recent version of Android until August, and will be on the most recent version of OOS for two years.

That's flat out wrong. When the 3T was released other than the pixel were all running Marshmallow. The 3T released with M a year ago, and is getting O as its last update a year after release. Effectively 1 year of support.

Also many phones had N around the time the 3T released. One Plus just doesn't want to support the T phones longer than the regular ones, so they release with last years OS and then can drop support while still technically supporting it for 2 major updates.

The 3T was released mid-November And Nexus devices already had it. This is what I found in just a couple minutes of searching, there are likely some I missed. Considering how much emphasis One Plus puts on their software, you should expect them to have the latest OS on these devices.

That's not at all what I said. I just meant that compared to the OP2 which didn't even get updated, at least it's an indicator that they're updating OP2 did get an update, from lollipop to marshmallow.

Hung dry after that regarding big updates, but they're still pushing small patches and stuff last one was like a month ago. OnePlus 3 phones started out with Marshmallow, went through Nougat and are now heading to Oreo.

What more do you expect? Happens with vendors every cycle. Sony released the Xperia XZ last year with 6, while 7 was already out and other flagships were released on it V Nougat released August 22nd, and the XZ released September 30th.

So about a month after. Within that time frame it is reasonable for a device to release with the previous OS. The only non Nexus with Nougat in September was the V And Sony released the Nougat update at the end of November.

But when flagship phones are releasing in mid-November, 3 months after the OS release, it is harder to justify not having Nougat. Yes it was released on MM but it should have on N. But no they had to show that 2 major Android Updates.

Along with updates every weeks. I don't know, my OP5 is still on September security patch. Samsung was faster with those on my GS6. As much as I don't like Oneplus as a company, when I thought about it I'd have probably bought their device or at least seriously considered it if I was to upgrade this year.

Don't like curved displays, so Samsung is out. Don't like lack of headphone jack, so HTC and Google are out. Then if I looked at the remaining devices and wanted something with a reliable display, good battery life, smooth software, metal back instead of glass, Oneplus delivers a robust device.

Could probably install Google's camera to have a decent experience with that too. A serious question, why do you guys need Oreo? I am genuinely curious, have no intention to sound like a dick: Just better software support in the long run mainly.

It looks like Oneplus 5T will get Oreo, then get P next year, and that's it. I wouldn't upgrade a device just because it doesn't have the latest software, but I'd rather be able to keep a device for 4 years with it having the latest software than not.

The target market for OnePlus, though will either not have the phone two years from now, or will pretty easily switch to Lineage for Q down the road. Treble would make that switch easier though.

Support cycle should last much longer, once Treble is a reality. That is the expectation. My OPO has lasted long, and has Oreo technically available, but it's still quite stuttery and unstable for a daily driver, as it got left from official updates quite some time ago.

It still has a large developer community, but there is only so much you can do. For me, its the background app management. Finally, I won't need to greenify bad apps as the OS does this for me by limiting wakeups.

I dont like how OP support their devices only a single major update and it seems once again they are going to put just Oreo out for this and ditch it, I dont think I should have to go to custom roms just to get updates IMO.

Used to always run custom roms but I try not to anymore as most stock experiences are solid now. I can see why OP is great for people who still are happy to run custom roms but personally for me id rather not anymore, I need my phone to work every day all day now: Not great, but it's still highly unlikely they'll only give it oreo.

Ah I must have been mistaken, I could have sworn they only got 1 major update each life time but that seems like I had the wrong idea its actually 2. So that means Android P is a possibility which isn't so bad so I shouldnt really make too much of a fuss about that part of things.

Personally on the 5t for me I want a smaller device not a larger one so the s8 is looking like the best option for me. After the nexus 6p I really have decided I cant hack the large phones, they are great but I always end up in a situation where I want to use it one handed and its a pain so I want to go down a size.

Not great, but not as bad as it used to be. I actually prefer nougat to oreo - in Oreo you can't see alarms in the notification tray, but you can in nougat.

It's probably getting Oreo before the end of the year. And if it means anything to you, OnePlus 3 shipped with Marshmallow, then got Nougat and just got Oreo like yesterday or so.

Remember when this sub was gonna boycott OnePlus due to all the bullshit last year, and the year before that, and the year before that? The reason Samsung still puts out laggy junk and Verizon keeps fucking you all over is because this sub has the attention span of a goldfish.

Except this time, cause this phone's marketing is awesome! Eh, maybe the Samsungs, LG's, and Apples. Not really, this sub's hate for small things kept me buying from G6, iphone 8, S8, note8, mi 6 because I was always buying the latest and greatest, basically wasting money.

My friends and acquaintances all love their oneplus phones and recommend them in a heartbeat. This is the thing I have noticed actually. Many of my non tech savvy classmates and people actually don't give a single fuck about updates and don't bother with them even when available.

OnePlus is actually great for these people. The phone won't slow down like others so even remaining at the version it has shipped is no problemo! So is it really that big of a deal?

Now that I think about it this is one of the reasons why Samsung's low-mid end devices even sell. They are almost guaranteed to not get updated but still sell a lot because people consider the brand name and customer support rather than updates!

And most people will be fine with the next OS update coinciding with their next phone purchase. They only have to learn things once every few years. I swear we need a good Android virus outbreak to teach OEMs and people that security updates are necessary.

And for people who really cares about those, OnePlus it's wonderful for a tech savvy that knows how to Rom. My cousin still runs the OG one plus and it's still doing great he says.

He will update to the 5t though because it's time. I run the 3t while his sister and brother in law have a OP 5. Not a fan of Samsung's software myself, but they're one of the only companies putting some of the most complete and best hardware in an Android phone.

Their screens are some of the best, great camera, IP68 dust and water proof, wireless charging, decent battery life, fast charging, headphone jack, premium in hand feel and design and so much more.

They give you a lot for the price it's offered at and heck, wait a bit and the price falls down pretty quick. Their update record is also a bit better than OnePlus' if I recall, though still bad overall.

To be fair I don't remember much talk of a brand-wide boycott, just sub-wide mockery for their mistakes. I think it makes perfect sense to wait a bit to make sure they don't have any stupid issues and then make an informed decision.

Part of that informed decision has to be that you're saving money at the expense of buying from a company that can pull bush league crap from the safety of China and you won't necessarily be able to walk into a store and talk to a human if you have a problem.

You're right, but in the grand scheme of things, even it this sub all boycotted a phone it wouldn't make that much of a difference. The average consumer eats up marketing and buys whatever they're told.

But I did boycott them? What else do you want me to do? Bitch and whine like you? This sub doesn't represent anyone but the. You spent too much time in the circlejerk.

You can trash talk every phone you want. Muh TouchWiz, bad update cycle, not stock, no headphone jack, not best camera, jelly-effect, bad screen quality, etc. I am looking to get the 5T as well.

My problem is the adaptive brightness, battery drains so fast. I'm just not sure if it's worth letting the S8 go. I'd say that's very good. I don't get it either.

With adaptive brightness, you're supposed to get a lot better battery life, after the phone learns your usage patterns when do you want darker than auto, when do you want brighter than auto.

Unless you pump up the brightness all the time to max, it should be saving battery life altogether. I have an S8 too, and in 6 months of use noticed no lag at all - apart from the occasional once in a month Facebook or Messenger quickfreeze.

The OnePlus 5 aspires to be the next flagship killer, with top-of-the-line innards, premium cameras and redefined design language that is largely crafted on the blueprints of Apple's iPhone 7 Plus.

It imitates Samsung and other premium phone makers. The OnePlus 5 sports 5. A screen is still a full-HD unit with x pixel resolution. It sports a dual-camera set-up comprising a megapixel and 20 MP dual cameras -- at the rear.

The cameras support portrait mode, which focuses on the subject and blurs the background, something that was introduced first in Apple iPhone 7 Plus. In terms of battery life, the Dash charge gives you a day of battery life with just half an hour of charging.

I hate lag, even micro lag, but I'm yet to notice it. Heck, my work Mac will lag sooner than my S8 or Note8! People skipping on Note 8 because of fear of lag are really missing out on something special.

I don't even miss my OP5 while using my Note 8, and OP5 was probably the fastest phone and Note 8 is very very close to that, or even faster on some instances.

Some people are more sensetive to it than others. And I envy you, if you do not notice it. I really wish I did not! I just tried a Nokia 8 in a store, just opening the Phone app had a smoother animation on the Nokia 8.

Usually longer animations are there to hide jank, doesnt seem to work for Samsung though. Haha thats the same thing keeping me from buying the 5T right now: D Worst time to sell the S8 here, it's pretty cheap this Black Friday "week" they got here.

And I was one of them, then I got an S8, and later, a Note8. Yet to find any lag on either device. Mine is not laggy junk, but it's definitely just as laggy as my year old HTC That is to say, not very laggy but still periodically lags for no reason.

Currently waiting for my razer phone, using a 3T now. At least with the Nougat software on the OnePlus 5. I'm not sure if that will be the case with all the changes they've made in the Oreo beta.

I guess as long as System Tuner is available, you should be able to disable any icons you don't like. I really like this, but my 6p is actually still fine and this doesn't seem to do anything much better.

I think I'd either pay a little more and get the S8 or go full budget with an A5. Especially if the rumours about the A5 turn out to be true. Depends what you value. I wouldn't even consider the S8, with money taken out of the equation, because I value software before anything else.

It's for those same exact reason I just ordered the Pixel 2. It might have some serious QC issues and be overpriced. But it offers the smoothest sofware experience of any phone both iOS and Android, and I really value that.

The fact that it also runs Android, an OS with a ton of customization option, is an added bonus. Why is the s8 so much more expensive in Denmark when it's around the same price as the OP5T in other European countries?

I know they use Krone, but prices across the EU should still be relatively consistent, shouldn't they? If not, import from Germany or Netherland maybe? What I did years ago was just get a piece of paper and fold it in the right dimensions.

You won't get the thickness, but that's pretty much non existent nowadays anyway. Is the face unlock something new added by OnePlus? Android already has a face unlock feature built in. It's much faster and apparently works in the dark.

Watch some of the reviews, face unlock just bypasses the lock screen completely. I don't get why people say it's mediocre, the average person doesn't see shit and only if you zoom you see it. That's what stopped me from getting a OnePlus 5.

Was hyped for a dual camera set up only to be disappointed. I wish I could remember which early version of the Gcam worked best. The new one gives awful awful dot matrix in birght areas. Shame, because the other areas of a photo look great.

It will most likely get P at the end of next year but probably nothing after that. That is a bit less than 2 years until you are actually behind in Android Version.

I don't like how the quick settings are now just on and off toggles instead of giving some more options. It's been that way since the OP5 dropped. I had toggles on my Note and on my V I can long press if I want more options, but mostly I just want to turn something on or off quickly.

How did they have more functionality before? They are now long press to get to the "menu" instead of swipe down twice and press. I think it is more consistent that they behave the same in both cases of "swiped down".

Plus I'm sure it makes sense being that way for most users. Would it be a good upgrade from a Galaxy S7? I expect the battery to be better and I'd lose water resistance, Sd card, Samsung pay and notifications for gear S3 but would the camera be comparable?

I'd eventually return to a Galaxy but till they figure out their FP placement, I'd like to check others. Not too happy with LG - its updates and tiny sensors.

I think it would be. I had the s7 edge and I then got a OnePlus 3t. When it comes to using the phone every day, the 3t beat my s7 easily. It was so smooth and battery was great.

Camera wise, the s7 had a fantastic camera and the 3t camera was good. I think that if the camera of the new 5t is any better then the 3t it would be very solid. Everything about this phone looks great, except the lack of Verizon compatibility.

I hope for the OnePlus 6 they add at least all necessary LTE bands for Verizon use Verizon will still be stingy and not let you activate it on their network, I'll bet. This is the only aspect of the 5T that I'm interested in.

Design and feel of the phone is great. I saw in videos before but in real.. Its just fluid like S7 edge. Faster than the fastest. We use to decrease the animation effects in every phone.

But oneplus becomes so responsive that we have to enable them again because that fast response time was not comfortable. Battery life is superb…. It will run for a day with good on screen time and usage.

Camera - It disappointed us in the beginning and we freaked out because quality was snowy and sound recording was worse in videos. Then we tried HD and it became better.

And then we tested 3rd party apps… works great. Now a software fix is on the way and will be released by oneplus soon. There is an issue with wifi hotspot which will be fixed in the next update.

Speaker sound is loud and clear… and call quality is marvelous. Oneplus is giving great offers at the moment. With free case and accessories which is a plus. At this price point, you can only get Honor 8pro which is not even near to oneplus in terms of looks.

OnePlus should have waited a few months and just released this model as their offering. Their T versions are what you should be getting if this trend keeps on because their base versions always seem to have some degree of compromises which are then addressed in their T models.

Keep in mind if you have used OP5 exclusively then switching back to a traditional orientation may cause you to see the 'jelly' effect again until your eyes adjust again.

I still don't quite understand the phenomenon that scrolling would be any different if you turned the screen upside down. Or just buy a phone when you need to? If you want to upgrade every year just buy the T model every year, not really a difficult problem.

I mean that's how it works with all cycles. Because the 5T doesn't make the 5 worse as a phone, the same way the 6 won't make the 5T worse. I wouldn't want to be a OP5 owner right now. It also fixes a fatal flaw in the screen that OnePlus has denied any wrongdoing in.

Who's going to buy the OP6 next year when they know it will be made redundant after 6 months or less with a T model? Can't say I like where OnePlus is headed and how they get there.

It's not at all a fatal flaw. The drama here about the screen has been utterly ridiculous. It's perfectly fine for everyday use. I guess it changes from person to person, but when I notice something wrong I can't stop seeing it.

There's a big chance I would hate the 5 because of the screen "issue". It's only an 'issue' because your brain is accustomed to seeing refresh from top to bottom.

I saw the jelly scrolling quite readily when I got the phone. Within a week or two, I couldn't see it at all, because my brain had adjusted to seeing refresh from bottom to top.

So you're sure it's a bad thing even though you've never experienced it yourself. No, that's not what I said. When I notice something that doesn't work "well", I will keep noticing it for a long time.

Sometimes it's a dead pixel, a misaligned icon, the way how scroll works, etc. I never said I was sure this was a terrible problem or that I would hate for sure. I honestly think the screen wobble is the least bad thing about that screen.

The weird color temperature and the poor pixel density was enough for me to return mine. It was very noticeable coming from a One M8. I have a 3T and legit had to google wtf the jelly effect was. I notice it very rarely and even then it's usually only when I'm actively looking for it.

I'm pretty OCD about those kinds of things. As the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. It's more the audacity of OnePlus to deny and I believe, at one point, they even went as far as saying it was an intentional feature.

I can't remember which article since I read so many about it at the height of the issue. I don't think I personally would be very happy knowing that my phone has a manufacturer defect and now a new version has come out fixing it.

I have minor OCD about these things too, but dude, come on. EVERY phone has some problem with it. Not trying to say this is ok, but its unfortunately the norm.

I'd say that I dont upgrade phones to get the newest technology, but because I chase the dream of finding a 'perfect' phone for me. Don't get me wrong, I never implied that there is a perfect phone.

But a company releasing a phone that they built improperly, albeit, not to the extent of unusable while disregarding their manufacturing defect or making PR claims about it being a feature is a bit hard to swallow.

On top of that, now there is an improved model with a big display change while fixing their mistakes from the previous revision doesn't really make you feel like they are for the consumers any more.

I was a big supporter of theirs when they broke out on the scene back in I still own my OnePlus One but I don't feel like they are what they once were. Why do people make stuff up? They said the effect was natural due to the orientation of the screen.

This is not the first or probably the last to have such a screen orientation. A defect is a broken fingerprint reader. An upside screen is a design choice, and perhaps a design flaw depending on each person.

I don't need a full size screen. The front facing finger print scanner is way more important to me. I'm big lover of capacitive buttons and I haven't bought into the full screen trend.

I actually own a ZTE Axon 7 and not these That doesn't mean as consumers, we should be praising the fact that a company had to release a new phone without messing up the manufacturing especially when people supported their releases.

I own a Oneplus 5 and I'm not jealous of the new version. The jelly screen effect has never bothered me, I like the front facing FP reader, and I use the 2x lens all the time. The all screen display is sexy though, but by the time I need a new phone every phone will have one.

That's totally cool with me. I'm glad you enjoy your experience with your phone but others might not. My comment is in relation to my own personal opinion, if I was a OP5 owner and seeing this news.

I remember dreading the day I would receive my OPO and potentially encountering the yellow screen stain. Who's going to buy the OP5T now when they know it will be made redundant after 6 months with the OP6?

A new phone coming out doesn't automatically make what you have any worse. I don't think that's a proper comparison. Even the cost is the same. The big difference is, subjectively, a bigger and better screen that's been built properly.

While comparing the OP5T to the next generation is akin to apples and oranges. The OP6 will no doubt have a better processor along with other potential upgraded hardware. Maybe at this point in time, you can argue that the S8 is very similar to the Note 8 but the origins of both lines were meant to be different with different hardware.

In addition, the use cases for them are very different when they first came into being and has slowly converged in looks, hardware and usage. Again, I don't believe that is proper to use as an example to rebut my reasoning.

Upside-down screen doesn't bother me at all. Removing the front fingerprint scanner is a hard pass. If my OP5 was stolen today, I wouldn't even consider replacing it with a 5t.

I'd either settle for a pixel, or find an OP5 from new-old-stock. Unlike some people, I'm totally okay with that. Some might mind when a company makes a mistake on their products, others won't really care.

I don't use some of these but I do enjoy using the volume controls for media, and having a silent ringer mode that is separate from Do Not Disturb! That is something I miss every time I use another phone.

I also enjoy being able to hide apps, app draw sorting and the actual power saving modes. On stock android, it's like all or none when it comes to power saving, which is alright, but is annoying when you just need battery life for a few more hours but still want to use your phone, outside of texting and calling.

I have had times when I needed to use the Med mode, which was awesome to have. Samsung cannot possibly add anything to the perfection of stock Android.

Ever evolving perfection without a single flaw stock Android that is. Stock Android is so much faster that Chuck Norris uses it with peanut butter now instead of jelly. Samsung Experience Touchwiz slows your phone down so much that you literally can get cross country letters from USPS faster than Gmail.

I haven't touched a Samsung paperweight for years now. But I can authoritatively say that none of the dozens and dozens of features baked into Experience are of any value to me whatsoever.

They never will be. Well, once near identical features come included in stock Android, or if Apple invents them, then it will be the right time for their greatness to come forth.

So thankful that I'm not part of that poor laggy Touchwiz crowd. All the people whine about TouchWiz are pure hardcore nerds, not the cool ones who won't come to this website, nerds are boring people so they hate anything colorful or cheerful.

It's extremely useful to have an easy-to-activate one-hand mode when you are carrying your groceries The edge panels on the side of your phone can store useful widgets or shortcuts to your favorite apps.

The reason it's more useful than a simple homescreen is the fact that you can call out an edge panel from within any app, further improving multi-tasking. Sort of like alt-tabbing on PC. Stock Android will sort your app drawer alphabetically.

Useful, simple to grasp, great. Samsung does offer the alphabetical order option, but will also let you reorder your apps however you wish or even create folders within the app drawer.

The fact that you can select, move, and uninstall multiple apps at a time makes sorting a breeze, not a chore! Got two different Facebook profiles to balance between? Well, Samsung's Dual Messenger feature has you covered — it will install a clone of the same app and allow you to log into it with a whole separate account.

Sometimes, we wish to hide an app even from the app drawer — either because its a system app that's always on, an app that we very rarely use, or just simply due to privacy concerns.

Samsung allows us to that in a very simple manner. Keep in mind that accessing the hidden apps is an easy step, so anyone determined to see what's on the phone will find them relatively fast. That's why Samsung also introduced the Secure Folder — a place in your phone that's locked by your password and biometrics.

You can store copies of your apps there for content and conversations that shouldn't be seen by others. And yes, that means that, by combining it with the Dual Messenger feature from before, you can have a grand total of three different Skypes or other social apps installed on your phone.

The quick toggle grid on the Pixel XL has three columns for you to arrange your toggles in. Cool, but that leaves so much empty space! Sammy's button grid can have up to 5 columns, letting you pack a lot of quick toggles in a single page!

Sometimes, you want to lower your media volume before opening a video or playing your music. But i hate the time load I put into researching stuff cuz i gotta find a bit here and there on the NET!

But what do u say about Nexus 5x speaker and call quality? Too fixated on hardware specs. Getting software updates in particular security updates in timely fashion is also a huge part of the whole user experience.

Many OEMs are bad bad bad at this. They sell you a flashy phone, then they abandon you. The lack of ongoing support cannot make up the minor advantage in hardware specs. I found that with the Moto G, the t-mobile reception was so bad as to make the phone nearly worthless as an actual phone.

Any suggestions on smaller phones? I want something with decent specs 4. The 6P does not have an equally good screen as the Note 5. The Note 5 gets much brighter, reaching over nits in brightness while the 6P only breaks nits.

Could you please list off-contract prices? Much better, thank you! Your other link seems to cover Verizon, but…. The buy from Samsung link links to the S6 Edge rather than the vanilla S6.

And then their link to Verizon says on-contract but the Verizon page gives you the options of full-price or monthly payments. This is why I like Nexus phones and the Moto X. One phone that works on all carriers.

Are you planning to do any update to this guide? And are you considering doing a guide for windows 10 mobile in the future? Thanks for the note though! Google Fi just made an interesting announcement about their international support: That should be mentioned first on the Droid Turbo 2 review but semantics shmantics lol.

They should buy a phone that they can afford NOW. The tech world often feeds on this weird American consumerism that judges peoples worth based on their material possessions. Buy last years model, pay up front, and life within your income.

Your personal opinion, however strong and altruistic, is not a substitute for giving payment information in a commonly accepted format. Yeah, fuck you guys I believed in you.

Did you really give the G5 a full comprehensive review? I am bothered by the dismissal of the LG G5 because you called out many of the S7 benefits some of which are trivial eg. I agree that the S7 is constructed with more finesse, but you forgot the following:.

Especially because of the larger field of view and similar or even better low-light shots. Selfies are not even close in favor of the G5. This is a major factor that you gloss over. Multiple unbiased reviewers Phandroid have called this a win for the G5 because although the S7 scans faster, it scans to the lock screen which is inefficient.

In practice, G5 wins. In practice, the display on the G5 is superior to the S7 in that it actually shows the notifications themselves. I know these are big deals, but they should be at least mentioned.

The Wirecutter has an Apple bias, likely due to only using Apple products, and not out of malicious intent. They have a guide for the latest iPhone generation, but more recently updated their Android review.

Also your number 2 point is incorrect the Samsung Galaxy S7 has Quickcharge. They also missed that the Galaxy S7 Edge has a bigger battery. This write up seemed to have been done very quickly.

They avoid mentioning that the Galaxy S7 camera is better than the iPhone. Ryan Whitwam, the writer, has spent the past five years writing about Android phones. Hey Jacob, I just updated my comment to say that the G5 has Quickcharge 3.

There is nothing that is clearly a successor for someone who wants MotoX software tweaks, MotoX tiny size, Moto maker customization of the phone body, etc.

Please, Wirecutter, find that phone for me? The Wirecutter does suggest that if you want an Android, get an Android, if you want an iPhone, get an iPhone.

We especially note the excellent cameras and the replaceable batteries. But if those are important to you, then yes, get the G5. I agree with the below comments about affordability and overspending.

I am in the market for a phone as mine died a few days ago. Does anyone here have advice on whether I should buy an older unlocked note 4 versus buying a new 6p. My only issue with the note 4 is the age and whether updates will still come through.

Considering the cost and expandability, I really enjoy my Galaxy S5 and would as of now May would get another and bypass the S6 and S7. There is jsut now reason to buy a phone that does not have a replaceable battery AND expanded memory slot.

Oh and I have had no problems or issues with my Galaxy S5 since I bought it in In keeping with the era. Mobile phones have changed. The new models of mobile phones coming on the market every day.

Batteries have a lifespan, and only have so many charge cycles. Rather replace the battery than the phone. Who carries a second battery? LG has the slideout, but I still think attaching a spare battery via USB is more convenient and much more durable.

Charging via USB is what I do at home, work, and in my vehicle. I used to carry second and third! They take up a lot less space than a USB charger and take your phone from zero to full-charge instantly without adding any cables or bulk to the device, or subjecting the charging port to the stress of a micro USB connector bent into a pocket in my pants or bag.

USB chargers are great, too—I use them a lot—but are only slightly more convenient than charging from the wall. I would second or third, or fourth the suggestion that a removable battery is critical.

They are the only part of the phone that wears out typically within a year. If it does, you have the option to continue using the same phone indefinitely, or selling it or giving it away.

I bet it is hard to sell a phone with a non-removable, dead battery, no matter how good the build quality, the camera, the customized apps, etc. I have found the charging socket to be extremely vulnerable to problems on a range of smartphones and tablets.

This can limit charging capability if you have to have your plug sitting at a particular angle for the contacts to work. I guess you mean wireless charging? There are doodads you can add to any phone to give it wireless charging.

It has removable storage, though not a removable battery. Any word on when the OnePlus 3 addition will be incorporated? Any idea about how that will rate? Have you checked out any phones by BLU Products http: I just learned of their existence today.

Yes, when come to budget android phones Moto g is good. I expect this whole page will have to be revamped in the next month or two as there are a bunch of new offerings OnePlus 3, Moto Z, etc and the new Nexus phones are coming.

I would not buy a Moto G again unless I was gonna carry it around in one of those pouch-like cases. Hey, my wife has the OG Moto X which had the twist gesture enabled for camera.

Subjective; I like both phones. I own the Nexus 6P, my buddy and my sis also has a G4. I never hesitate to recommend it. I am considering purchasing an iPhone for the first time ever always have been and Android family because of the size of the SE.

For those of us are sick of the ever growing phones, is there an Android alternative that is as good or close to the Samsung Galaxy series, but closer in size to the iPhone SE? The go-to for good compact android phones has always been the Sony Z-Series compact.

The new Google phone. The only drawback is buying new cables and chargers for USB-C. Did you have your final thoughts on the Lumix mm? Is it worthy for replacing your current kit lens upgrade? Imagine being the engineer that had to take THAT solution to his boss?

You only have to worry about your phone exploding if you have a Galaxy Note 7. The Galaxy S7 is not affected and we stand by it as our pick. Is the Oneplus 3 discontinued? I am hearing rumors, and the website stops me from ordering it….

I checked in with our reviewer and as far as we know, it is not discontinued. We would be very very surprised if it was as it has not been out for very long.

Thanks for the response. We may still go with this, but I was not able to order the device last week when I tried. Could have been a temporary bug on the page of course….

I used to buy the premium phones but this does all I need. What about the LG v20? Will you add that to this review soon? Without the Note7, how does it compare to the Pixel XL? They do the most rigorous testing of any tech critics.

I think you should compare the price taking account of the memory storage options. If you want or need more than 32gb, with the pixel, you have to switch to the gb version, whereas with the S7 you can pop in a cheaper microsd card of any size.

I was introduced to almondgeniushacker gmail. It is very affordable. One advantage you mention is that the Pixel phones have Android 7. Expect an update to remedy this globally in December. Thanks for the info!

Google is not paying attention to this, first phone ever that has this problem, and I always buy my phones in USA we have the same bands. Same or better specs than above with deep discount. The big negative in the reviews was the software.

But if you use a third party launcher, such as Nova which I use, all that nonsense and their apps go away. You are left with a very fast phone with great sound and display and great build, with all modern bells and whistles included.

Also a promise of pushing out Nougut 7. I have no doubt they are doing as a loss leader to make a name of themselves. But, if you are willing to take a chance, it is an incredible bargain.

Easily as good as iPhone or Samsung at a third or quarter of the price. And if they fold in a year, so what. You got one or two years of service for very little dollars. What is the best oneplus 3 alternative for Australia?

I miss my N5X, with its Nougat, better fingerprint sensor, and monthly patches, but I do prefer the performance, build quality, and screen of the S7. Do you guys have any opinions on iPhone vs Android?

And the same for your laptop guides, help deciding between Apple and Windows. Why do all the tech sites continually include the Pixels? Many reviews say it does, including Dxomark, but three different reviews I read today say that the difference is marginal: At least portrait mode is.

Background blur without doing anything special. Maybe the S8 will be the answer. HTC U 11 looks like it could be interesting. New features, great camera and sound. Time will tell though. When switched to the regular sRGB gamut, color accuracy is beaten only by the latest iPhones and Galaxies.

I got the G6. Better water resistance vs Pixel, sd card support, and in stock. It is hard to buy the Pixel directly from google due to supply problems. Galaxy phones still lag due to heavy skin, Touchwiz according to people at xdaforums.

G6 is also cheaper than Pixel or S8. Happy so far with the purchase. Even cheaper if you trade a recent S7, Note 5, etc. Thanks for a great review like always.

I always follow your site for great smartphones reviews… APK Authority. I agree that the Pixel phones are the best smartphones for rich power users. These are surprisingly capable and well built and a fraction of the price of a Pixel or Galaxy or iphone.

Great phone, simply fantastic battery life. Wish they included NFC and had faster updates but overall, a great device with near stock Android. Any chance this gets updated before Black Friday?

Grab a 1st gen Pixel or Pixel XL. Best money I have spent on a phone. OnePlus has long been a favorite in this range. LG G6 is also nice with a better camera, but more crapware.

The Nexus 5x did a lot of that, but unfortunately has the infamous bootloop issue and Google has turned its back on users experiencing the issue. Plus its basically the same size as the 5x.

Why spend THAT much money on a phone? I had a 5x and the Pixel 2 fits in my hand better than it did. Though, it is much slicker so be mindful of that. Unfortunately not a lot of choices in that area.

The relatively new Samsung Galaxy S7 is smaller than the Nexus 5 although a few grams heavier. Sorry, but the phone reviews here lose the plot in the same way as all the other reviewers: How about criteria like these: These things are important!

Who cares about a couple of mm of size or an ounce or two of weight? Battery life is far more important. Shaving weight leads to phones that bend in your pocket, batteries that run out after a few hours and removing essential components like headphone jacks.

This is a must have feature for me as I have have very poor reception at my office. I can see how that could be a dealbreaker for a lot of people. The last acceptable phone is the LG v20, as it is the last flagship phone with both removable battery and an SD reader.

All of its components can be repaired using only a screwdriver. No newer phone offers all of these features and these things outweigh all other purchasing criteria. Everything else is irrelevant.

Did you only have 1 v30 and pixel 2XL or did you look at multiple phones to see if it was a problem with your sample? Did you look at the updates to phones like the Essential?

Seems irresponsible to not mention OnePlus and spyware. Or other products and ad tracking installed by the manufacturer without consent. Perhaps even disingenuous to not warn the audience about the pitfalls of cheaper laptops and cellphones in general.

Such as the Lenovo and spyware. In all of our budget laptop guides we say that the first thing you need to do upon purchase is remove bloatware. Dell too has been guilty too.

No worries at all. Thanks for keeping us vigilant! Pretty much the Samsung S5 was the epitome of design, just needs an upgrade in the guts. I have waited for all the flagships to come out and was pleased with my choice, the Oneplus 5T.

Coming from an LG V10, it was a nice upgrade. So there may be a wait for Oreo.. Having an iPad, I used to put the latest OS on it but learned.. The Oneplus 3 has Oreo so they are committed even to older phones.

My Dash charge system is so far the fastest in the business.. It does so without heating up the phone, which Quick Charge does. I usually go to bed with the phone off the charger and just plug it in while I get ready in the morning.

Stuff to think about when considering the Oneplus 5t vs the other flagships! Thanks for your great reviews…totally a fan. I did read it and aware of those issues. You can opt out of sending analytics data to OnePlus.

Thankfully there are many watchdogs out there in the forums and enthusiasts community. TBH the Samsung battery issue is more serious and all companies are guilty of some security or privacy violation at some point.

Just need to keep reporting and calling them out. They offered a PayPal option which was safe. There was a slight delay but the upgrade to Oreo feels very minor. The main thing is that they do commit to updating it..

I would love to see these or other smartphones reviewed with respect to their long-term durability. If something goes wrong with the hardware, especially the battery, after the warranty expires, will it be straightforward to replace?

Will the manufacturer offer hardware support, even at some off-warranty cost? There were multiple people whose batteries failed, rendering the phone unusable I know a few. With a 4k HDR screen, and a really minimalist interfaced design compared to the Samsung bloat, I really love this phone.

Comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy 8 my wife has, the XZ Premium has a better screen, and better camera in my opinion. Also, not having the infinity screen is great as well. The edge applications just slow the system down, and get activated by accident.

And they made a button, when buttons are so rare, that nobody wants. Apps you install on your phone to modify what that button does break system updates because they have to have root permissions to modify the Android OS response to that button.

One thing Samsung does have going for it that I miss, is that on my S7, I could have multiple bluetooth audio devices connected to my phone, and use their audio-switcher function to specify which device my media plays through.

I personally use this phone and it never gives trouble. Bought it at Amazon and went for another for my girlfriend. Offers quality camera both back and frond and its audio volume is good too. I found a very interesting poll about this topic.

I think you should look https: Samsung Galaxy S8 Stylish and water resistant The best screen of any Android phone, a beautiful aluminum-and-glass design, water resistance, and a microSD slot.

Why you should trust us Should you upgrade? Samsung Galaxy Note 8 It has a keyboard: Ryan Whitwam Our pick. Ryan Whitwam Also great. Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Great battery life and more durable design The Galaxy S8 Active includes the same excellent camera as the regular Galaxy S8 but adds a shatter-resistant display, a more durable design, and a much larger battery.

There is really too much hype for it. But… the HTC One is just so sexy! Review the N1 please. Moto Maker on Verizon on Nov 11th…. When do you think you are going to have your take on the Nexus 5 integrated in here?

See his clarification here: Thanks for the note! A coworker went with Ting and a Nexus 5. I will be curious to see how he fares. I checked out the Moto X, nice phone but the screen is not as sharp as most phones in If a choice between moto X and Nexus 5, definitely Nexus 5 all the way.

Thanks for your enthusiasm. I hope to be able to get a review unit next month. I agree that the reviews look quite positive. Still invite only apparently! Any updates on this? Have you gotten a review unit yet?

Once a unit is obtained and reviewed it will be added to the guide! What are these guys thinking? And that was said a month ago! You should read our guide above. It can be hit or miss, we mention this in the review.

How would you rate Oppo Find 7a? Sorry, had both… The LG G3 wins by a mile.. Have you seen the HTC First? Not enough consumer products have been released. Nexus 5 vs Xperia Z1 Compact.

Rolling it in how? Like comparing all the Android devices to the iPhone in one guide? Sorry about the confusion! Why are you using the image for the original Moto X? Yup, looks like it was edited.

Thanks for the comments! A few that intrigued me below: Michael, thanks for your considered response. Thanks again for your response! This says it best — I agree with Segan and Ion except about the battery life, which was very inconsistent on my T-Mobile review unit.

Wait, we have a table of contents? As of now, the iPad Air 2 is our pick for best overall tablet. You think you know my name better than I do? Your talent is wasted on Disqus. Did you actually read the review?

Any thoughts on the Asus ZenFone 2? How can it be better than the S5 when is has a built in battery and no sd card slot? So what was of concern? And what is the best selling mobile phone on the market today….

Never had a problem with either the S2 or S4 and quality cards. Check out the Alcatel one touch idol 3. Missing the Alcatel one touch idol 3. Check out the Xperia Z5 Compact.

Glad you like it! Forwarded along to our expert! Might take a bit but he should have some helpful advice! Is there any flip phone that runs Whatsapp? Would you buy a car that has an open recall against it?

Why is this any different? Well a car is several thousand dollars and can kill you or others. That is true, but identity theft can take years to recover from. We have a budget Android guide coming up soon so stay tuned!

Does Motorola at least replace your phone for free when it happens? You just answered most of your own questions! When are you going to update this and include the V10 in the comparison?

You have a reccomendation for the best Iphone case, what is the best for the Galaxy S6? We no longer have any suggestions for Galaxy cases. The RX is one of our fav cameras.

Great features to add in a phone. Maybe in the future! Yes more detail is incoming, but for now: A little electric tape on the front should work for most of it. Have you looked at the Moto G?

I believe we do. You are correct sir! Your other link seems to cover Verizon, but… The buy from Samsung link links to the S6 Edge rather than the vanilla S6. The Nexus 6P is available on a carrier plan directly from Google.

Google Fi is the carrier. HTC 10 previews are coming out. Definitely looks pretty at least. The Droid Turbo 2 is on Android Marshmallow 6 rather than 5. I agree that the S7 is constructed with more finesse, but you forgot the following: Useful and at least worth mentioning.

Jul 02, · My friends, one thing I know if we accept that this "jelly effect" it as a "normal feature" (common OP/Carl you are better than this) it will not be f.

Mine works without problems, did you try contacting oneplus? Mine works just fine, Either of them left handed? OP3's proximity sensor won't get covered when you attend call from your left that could cause issues too a lot of phones I have used had this issue thanks to the sensor placement.

I'm left handed so that could be the issue, not sure which hand friend uses when speaking on the phone but he is right handed. If you want "true" blacks, go with the 5T. If you want higher resolution, go with the G6.

If you don't mind a pentile pixel layout, either one is fine, but if you insist on RGB, the G6 is your best choice. Both screens should be more than adequate for most people.

Besides it is QHD. It comes down to personal preferences. Jelly scrolling resolves itself by using the OP5 for a few days. The effect comes from your eyes not being used to the screen refreshing images from bottom and up, rather than top to bottom which is what's normal.

Downside being that if you're a OP5 user, every other phone will have the jelly effect. Eh, I'm an OP5 owner bought it 2 months ago and I still notice the jelly effect from time to time, and I also don't notice it on other phones.

I think sticking to a strictly month life cycle to release new products is exactly why companies end up making compromises to meet that deadline. Which also then gives OnePlus a chance to release another product 6 months down the line with minor improvements.

Want to temporarily get rid of an app badge without necessarily dismissing its notification? Cool, just tap and hold on the app icon and tap "clear badge". Don't worry, it will reappear if more notifications come.

Moving your cursor around a text field has been an awkward task ever since the virtual keyboard became a thing. LG's keyboard lets you move the cursor more precisely by swiping across the spacebar.

But Samsung's latest keyboard goes above and beyond by letting you swipe a finger across the whole virtual keyboard, using it like a touchpad. Sort of like the iPhone keyboard and its 3D Touch cursor.

It's awesome that manufacturers are making full use of their huge displays by letting you hide the virtual navigation buttons and fully immerse yourself in the content on screen.

It's not so awesome when you have to pull the navigation out before you can tap the "Home" button. On Samsung's flagships, however — just apply pressure on the point where the home button is supposed to be and voila — you are home!

Google has upgraded its Ambient Display with an always on toggle in order to match what Samsung and LG are doing with their Always On Display features. But Sammy's is still more elaborate — you've got a pick of a few different styles, you can put a custom photo on your off screen, and you can have an ever-present glow effect on it to match your current theme if the theme supports it.

Yeah it may drain a bit more battery, but it's pretty to look at and useful for information at a glance. And who's worried about battery in your 9-to-5 office situation?

Samsung's home screen and app drawer can have their grid set to 5x6, allowing it to show a total of 30 apps per screen. As we said — we do have a ton of apps on our phones nowadays, so the more of them we can see without swiping too much, the better.

If the huge screens can show them, why waste the space? Last but not least, we have the themes. Sure, one can argue that you can customize stock Android as much as you like by installing a launcher of your choice, icon packs, et cetera.

But the same goes for Samsung's phones, so Samsung Themes is an all-in-one place for icon packs, wallpapers, Always On Display effects, and fully packaged themes. If you need your phone to feel fresh every week — it's the place to go.

One Handed mode Phones are getting big, but our hands aren't getting any bigger. Edge screen The edge panels on the side of your phone can store useful widgets or shortcuts to your favorite apps.

App drawer sorting Stock Android will sort your app drawer alphabetically. Dual Apps Got two different Facebook profiles to balance between? App hiding Sometimes, we wish to hide an app even from the app drawer — either because its a system app that's always on, an app that we very rarely use, or just simply due to privacy concerns.

Denser Quick toggles grid The quick toggle grid on the Pixel XL has three columns for you to arrange your toggles in. Use volume keys for media Sometimes, you want to lower your media volume before opening a video or playing your music.

Do not disturb — app exceptions Nowadays we have tons of apps on our phones, all vying for our attention. App badges Android Oreo finally has app badges. Keyboard cursor Moving your cursor around a text field has been an awkward task ever since the virtual keyboard became a thing.

Force Touch home button It's awesome that manufacturers are making full use of their huge displays by letting you hide the virtual navigation buttons and fully immerse yourself in the content on screen.

Although the G6 is fast and runs Android 7. The phone has a titanium frame and the rear panel is highly durable ceramic, whereas most other phones are aluminum and glass. The build of Android 7.

The biggest issue is the camera, which produces worse images than the Pixel or Galaxy S8, and is often no better than budget phones like the Moto G5 Plus. It has a large 6-inch This OLED is bad enough to be a dealbreaker.

You can squeeze the U11 to trigger actions and open apps using HTC Edge Sense, but the specially treated all-glass chassis is particularly slippery and shows every smudge and fingerprint.

Availability is also a big problem for this phone: The Moto Z2 Force is fast, has an excellent fingerprint sensor, and runs a clean version of Android Nougat.

However, the plastic covering this indestructible AMOLED screen is extremely soft and easy to scratch—even a fingernail will do it. Sony Xperia X series: The display quality is far behind that of other manufacturers, and it has a lot of bezel around the screen.

The camera has some cool features, like fps slow-motion video, but image quality is average at best. It is indeed a good time to be shopping for an Android phone. I was so excited for the MOTO x. Then I saw the red HTC one and was sold on that, sprint only, deal breaker.

So hard to see the fragmentation of Android aesthetically by carrier. And a request wirecutter: I consider myself pretty savvy but i cant figure it out. This will likely be the choice for our family.

We are around wifi so much anyway that it should work well. Over the life of the phone it will add up to a lot of savings. RW has a great plan and a great phone. The Moto X works great with wi-fi, but my caveat is check out Sprint before the 30 day return contract expires.

That was a deal breaker. Where is the speaker located? I have an SG3 and it makes me jealous. As a follow up, I have purchased the Mahogany backed Moto X and have been using it for about 2 weeks.

It is a phone with a point and shoot camera sensor. I like how you say specs are nothing then go straight into talking about sensor specs. Can someone else except for the guy above who must have learning difficulties reply?

If so any specific details of when we can expect it? This article came at a perfect time one of my clients cwas just askin me for my input of which phones to get for his employees. What about the Droid Maxx?

To me it looks like essentially the exact same phone just a different shape, slightly larger screen, and a huge battery. Is there any reason not to get this phone if I like having the 2 day battery instead?

See his clarification here:. Because it is Android 4. The subsidies are a joke, too — you end up paying either the same amount or even more for the phone in the long run due to the extra monthly fees.

I think the point is an across-network clear choice for the best Android handset. Plus, last time I checked it was Verizon on top as the number 1 carrier in the US. The Moto X can now be upgraded to KitKat 4.

Article should be updated to reflect that. Android phones, even flagship phones, tend to start getting creaky and old around the year and a half mark, and the carriers stop supporting them with software updates almost immediately.

I may have missed it and therefore shame on me, but is there some information on what phone works for its primary purpose?? I am in a bit of a remote location and need a phone that gets really good reception to use in my house.

There are few that I have tried that have the antenna support to make calls in the house work. On top of that many folks I talk to who live in the city have the same issues in their house too….

Who make the more robust antenna function?? Thanks Tony, I am actually a retired network communications sales guy. So I am aware of the service anomalies. I am also a 15 year sprint customer in living in the no network area northwest of the airport in MO.

The key to my goodservice is the antenna in the phone hence the reason for this question. Now there is an LTE tower from Sprint a mile from the house. Problem is getting to someone who will give a consistent story on service trials and costs.

I am thinking about going to Verizon and killing this senoirity which means absolutely nothing with Sprint. I have some news. Anyone know what this is? She liked being able to pick her own color and trim.

The weight and curve are both great. My older daughter was ready to step up to a smartphone. Combine that with the good experience my wife had, and I decided on a Moto X for the 16 year old as well.

Now the tricky one. The 14 year old really wants to be in the smartphone crowd, but we really want to maintain controls on her internet access for a while longer. I have no desire for her to have, or to pay for, a data plan, but I would not mind if she had wifi in the house, where we manage access.

I feared we might have to get a non-smartphone. I stumbled onto the Moto G and I believe it will fit the bill perfectly. A reasonably priced off-contract smartphone. Uh oh, what about wifi in other places?

Android to the rescue. There are apps which PIN protect data access, both cellular and wifi. I love the idea of the pay for what you use model for 3 people who mostly use their phones for texting and most of their data is consumed over wifi.

I had two teenagers that lucked into two iPhones from their older siblings. And exactly that happened. A zoe is a short 3 second moving picture, nothing really special.

When you go through the gallery however it creates a Harry Potter newspaper-esque effect, really cool but not something super special. The video highlights is super special however.

Basically you go to an event or whatever and take a bunch of pictures and Zoes and it makes a highlight reel with funky filters and music, automatically. You can upload them to Youtube. Every single reviewer I read before I bought the phone loved it.

My family and friends love the highlights I upload to youtube. It gets me to take more pictures. It truly is a feature that will make some people chose the HTC One over other phones.

Considering everything else I would prefer the removable battery and expandable memory of an Play Edition S4, but I would never give up my Zoe highlights. I love my MotoX phone that I got for my birthday.

Wondered if you had any thoughts about apps — I recently signed up for Comcast Cable and Internet and they offer this app called ConstantGuard. Says it offers a faster and safer way to get to my online accounts and easier checkout when buying stuff online.

Do you know anything about this app? The recent deal between Google and Samsung are seeing to it that the extreme bloatware and TouchWiz will not overpower pure Android. Glad to see you offering hints and what not in the back section of the magazine.

Keep up the good work. I need a larger screen. Looking forward to the Samsung S5, for me the hooks are the waterproofing and the battery life. Better camera is fine, so is the super-fast processor.

Another feature may save me money: Those are the factors that are important to me in the next micro-generation of smartphones. It would be nice if you make a review on small-size android smartphones… Kind of Sony X1 Compact… All the companies are making phone screens larger and larger.

I want an android with small screen…. As you look at the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 I hope you will look into the myriad of problems that Sprint customers are facing with network issues related to the new tri-band phones.

Thanks for the feedback! Anxiously waiting the update for this article. My current phone is walking towards the light. Can you drop any hints for the desperate? Should I buy a used Verizon phone now?

Should I buy a cheap phone from Verizon on the Edge plan? This idea that you should restrict yourself to phones available locally through these ridiculously overpriced and unnecessary plans is obscene.

The screen resolution is the same. The camera while good was already good at 12MP. They should also call out mobile plans for the pricing sham they are. Thanks for the comparison RedSky!

In particular, the paragraph dismissing the S4 and anything else older also rubs me the wrong way as well. I have the LG G2 and I love it. When I first purchased it back in December, I was so afraid to switch from the iPhone but I have been so incredibly pleased with it.

AND as far as I know, LG is on the up and up as a company and deserving of some props for all of their amazing products. I am ready for an upgrade and I am on a budget. I still wish to have a great android phone however.

A site like The Wirecutter should be concerned with the immediate and the near-future, not rumors of new phones at the horizon. The Nexus line has been fairly consistent in release schedule, price, and quantity for the past two cycles.

If the OnePlus One is as great in real life as it sounds, I will adjust my recommendation post haste, but not before then. Could you reconsider the OnePlus One? Will OnePlus be sending you a review unit as soon as the production software is out?

I would totally prefer to pre-order and simply have a date when it would arrive, even if it was a month or so. They say that pre-order is annoying, but this invite system is way worse.

And now they will switch from invites to pre-order. A lot of people fall for that one. By the time they release it to everyone the buzz will have worn off and the next big thing will already be out.

I agree this is probably the overall best Android phone, but I also think it is important to support companies you admire. And more importantly to avoid companies with repulsive business practices.

It has a 16 MP rear camera and 2 MP front camera. Very informative review, thanks! I have an olddd Galaxy S2 that I rooted with Cyanogenmod 11 a 4. Works with older devices too!!

What about the sony xperia Z2? Big fan of Wirecutter, and have been following the Android Phone recommendations closely as I am looking to purchase in bulk for my workers.

The oppos are way better than samsungs. Have you considered the LG G2 as an unlocked option? Underestimate Smartphone fix screen at your peril. Given that its influence pervades our society, its influence on western cinema has not been given proper recognition.

It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that Smartphone fix screen is rarely given rational consideration by those most reliant on technology, who are yet to grow accustomed to its disombobulating nature.

Such a poorly designed and greatly bloated thing is the best Android phone? Thanks for the thorough and well-organized review! Given the fact that that market is dominated by the likes of Samsung, LG etc.

I wish there was a section here for for smaller android phones — 4. I want a phone, not a surf table. Unfortunately, that seems to be the trend with flagship Android and now Apple smartphones these days.

I know you can pick up a few different Android phone variations that are 4. I cannot stand big phones. Any other recommendations for best android phone if I refuse to go above 4.

I was almost ready to jump ship to an iPhone and now the iPhone 6 jumped on the big phone bandwagon…. Although you suggest the S5 I have to strongly disagree.

Table specs are nothing. Real world usage is all that matters. My wife has the M8 and it blows the S5 away. The touchwiz requires more power to run thus needing all that high hardware. The screen is nice on it and the camera is nice on the S5 as well.

I chose the Remix over the Samsung mini because of touchwiz. Table specs are there but real world usage which is what matters most is not for the S5. Sorry sammy fanboys, try again. Any update for the new Moto X yet?

Oh well, too late now. I was really considering the Nexus 5, but battery life concerns me. I was also looking at the Xperia Z1 Compact, which seems around the same price range.

Any quick thoughts you could provide? I guess with Google announcement this week, it would be too early to draw new recommendation. Great battery life, waterproof, android, great photos. This is handily the best Android phone overview I have yet to read.

Have you considered rolling your iPhone coverage in with it? IOS vs Android is mostly personal preference and this guide is pretty slick and even handed about personal preference, why not use this format and include the iPhone?

Comparing all the Android phones to the iPhone was poor wording, but essentially everything in one place is what I meant. Whoops, looks like we forgot to update that widget from the last version of the article.

Still only 8GB of built-in storage, though you can move apps to SD. Have you considered checking to see what is drawing all the power and remedy this? He plays Clash of Clans between appointments and emails, texts and even talks on it.

I am hoping to pull the trigger on buying the Z3 compact as soon as your review comes in for it. So I wait eagerly! It has so much battery life that I actually removed the battery icon from the menu bar.

My only niggle, and I suppose this is inevitable with trying to pack so much into a relatively small package, is the phone gets hot when the screen is on for an extended period of time.

However, the same thing would happen with the Nexus 5 and 4. So perhaps the HTC One keeps cool as well? Nice to see Sony competing in this space. Actually, I had a follow up question.

Could you please tell me what case you have for the Z3c? A few that intrigued me below:. However, the Bugdroid blocks the mag charging port. It also sounds like it provides less protection than something like the Bugdroid or Nillkin.

Normally, I consider The Wirecutter to be about the only consumer review site that does a decent job of identifying and prioritizing the salient characteristics that really matter in a product and giving excellent, nuanced reviews.

But I think you phoned it in this time pun intended. When they used the S5, they found it laggy. Normally, I expect The Wirecutter to always be on top when it comes to discerning reviews.

Please take a look at where you differed from other phone reviewers and consider that your standards may have fallen a bit short. Other reviewers did a better job than you this time, but I know you can do better still.

Thank you for your kind words, but I would like to correct some of your statements regarding what we did and did not consider in this review. Also, plastic is RF transparent whereas metal is not.

Call quality is important to many people, but is also outweighed by overall usability for most. If you make a lot of calls, you will be better served by a headset. The M8 and S5 both have good displays.

The S5 has more accurate whites, but inferior brightness, which in turn is somewhat mitigated by vastly superior contrast thanks to its AMOLED based display.

It has better overall color accuracy, but inferior saturation levels. Some reviewers say one thing, others say another. Your link has awesome info in that regard—thanks!

Several reviewers found it significant to the point of being an annoyance. Shocking, this is the first review I have disagreed with from this site. Everyone has their own opinion on which Android handset is best.

This says it best —. I agree with Segan and Ion except about the battery life, which was very inconsistent on my T-Mobile review unit. Well… with the official Droid Turbo launch today I will be watching for updated information on that phone.

I think this phone category page has become very difficult to digest and follow. Perhaps it should be broken into further sub categories, or at the very least, an index anchor links at the top.

What do you find difficult? Not being snarky, very serious. However, I think the main point of the current format is for people to read it in its entirety, to get a complete understanding of all the best android handsets out there, and what they offer vs what other similar handsets offer.

This page has grown so gigantic that it is difficult to digest desired information. This is true of many other giant reviews on TheWireCutter. At the very minimum, I would prefer Table of Contents 1 match the text of each sub section, 2 located closer to the top instead of being buried within the article, and 3 expanded so that I can more easily find each phone reviewed.

The regular Z3 and Z3 Compact also feature wireless charging through the magnetic charge port. Plus I believe the Sony magnetic dock is less expensive than a lot of Qi chargers.

The Nexus 6 is tempting…the nice minimalist design of Motorola, a herculean battery, and balls-to-the-wall specs. It should have a great price point on contract as well. Disregarding size, the phone has no weaknesses in my opinion.

It marginally improves on everything I like about the M7. Some new software features, a little bigger screen, a little better battery, the same beautiful software.

So instead of someone seeing two guides and needing to read both, or entirely ignoring the second article, you have one guide that covers everything. Every other device on the wirecutter is reviewed this way.

The rest of the site is very well written and pretty unbiased. I understand there is much fuel to a fire regarding smartphones, but I feel like this particular section is oddly biased.

Another thing that was missed in regards to iPhone to Android comparison is the size of the devices. The iPhone 6 has a 4. In comparison to the iPhone 6 plus with a 5. In contrast the galaxy note 4 is.

In general android devices are smaller even though they have a larger screen. For example, the z3 compact is 5 inches tall but has a 4. Where the iPhone 5s last years favorite is 4.

But the point to my writing was mostly to highlight the folly in paying attention only to screen size and not actual phone dimensions. On a somewhat related note… the tablet guide says wait on best android tablet, but not on best tablet… what if the nexus 9 is preferred over the iPad Air 2?

Main point, some people will always want Android phones and some will always want iOS phones. Secondary point, the iPhone 6 is the best smartphone for most people. There are also people that like Windows Phone devices!!!!

You guys should see that its a really fierce battle between ios and windows phone regarding the smartphone market share! Please start including windows phone devices in forums, blogs, posts.

Especially the lumia is such a great phone. It is in the market for more than 2 years and its specs are still very up-to-date. Microsoft has also been doing an excellent job in providing the developers a better way to create their apps.

And I love the windows phone interface…. WP is gaining market share except in the US. Please do a WP guide and have it done. Especially since windows 10 is coming out in spring.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. The way you spell it, its wrong. Great phone with a major issue: VoLTE is currently not supported. Feels like a giant leap backwards. This should really be flagged in the article.

You need to make correction to this comment on the Z3 Compact: Having said that, 2-months on I love the Z3 Compact. Nice to see Sony back in the game. Dear Wirecutter, please help!

I need help escalating a wireless carrier issue. The phone data never works for more than a day or two. Voice always works, but data never works. After hours of tech support and some major reboots etc, it might work for a day and then boom, back to no internet.

Seen the problem recur in 3 different states so its not a location issue. Antennae bar is usually full, and in fact a Verizon iPhone sitting next to it has full data always.

Tech support has even replaced the instrument once and the SIM card twice. Perhaps something is wrong in the way the Verizon network interfaces with the HTC phone. Can you help me escalate this?

Bring it into a brick and mortar Verizon store and demand to speak with the manager. While it lacks the style and charm of the Moto X, the Droid Turbo is a powerhouse that manages to outperform its relative in nearly every way that matters.

Any thoughts on Dual Sim phones? I am in the circumstance of potentially wanting an inexpensive unlocked dual sim Android phone in Canada. Amazon results show a number by companies I have never heard of e.

BLU — a Miami based company targeting Latin America — accounting to wikipedia and expensive ones from names I have heard before. This review helps in parts of what I am looking for.

Despite a dual some being the ideal solution I may well end up going with a partial solution — budget android. You can find a Moto X unlocked for a decent price, but our unlocked pick is the Nexus 5.

Just sold my Nexus 5 for a good price and ordered a OnePlus One! The build quality is unbelievable for the price. It shipped with Kitkat though and the OTA updates came soon after.

Now running CM12 lollipop based rom. There were a few unlocked LG G3s but carrier branded. Moto X 2nd gen was next candidate but it was more expensive, had less storage, small battery and worse camera performance.

Android phones indeed rule the market and one of the best are Samsung and Xperia models. But I would choose Xperia because they are first of its kind features which makes them very unique.

Samsung Alpha great phone http: Will we get an update with more on the Droid Turbo and G Flex 2 before the new flagships are announced next week? Any sense of when Wirecutter take on those new flagships will be up?

Just disable the unused whiz bang stuff, and never use the extra apps. But the bloat is still there, taking up space on your phone. Look at how much free space there is on a fresh phone.

Touchwiz on Samsung phones takes up a decent amount of storage space. Exactly how much space is being used by useless apps installed by Samsung? I prefer many of the added features over standard Android, and the rest are easily ignored.

Once set up I spend little if any time in the System Settings. You can select the specific toggles you want to show up in the notification window. Last I looked, it was at least a couple gigs larger than the stock ROM.

Yeah, for settings, toggles, notification, etc. Extra stuff on the Settings menu or in the app drawer becomes really irrelevant to daily use. Android is so customizable that dismissing a phone on that basis just seems silly to me.

To each his own. For now, the only tech thing on my mind I care about, for now only, is good quality cases for the OnePlus One. Too may case manufactures are not realizing they are dropping the ball.

I can say this after months of research of phone cases. Also, let me add that the OnePlus One is now available every Tuesday for the entire day each week to the general public! I sure hope the case manufacturers are reading this since they really are missing out.
