Excellent software, solid and reliable. The only feature I'd like to see would be the ability to [optionally] add a delay when the feature "Run CCleaner when the computer starts" option is selected.

As it runs now, CCleaner is keeping the disk very busy while the various start-up programs are trying to load leading to some pretty intensive disk-thrashing and a start-up cycle that is much longer than it needs to be.

This is a excellent piece of software and does what it says it will do. I do not use the reg cleaner, just the other stuff. Reg cleaners simply put are not truly safe to use.

If my registry needs editing, I do it myself so I can see what is happening before it happens. Reg cleaners I have found do more harm than good in the long run, what does not show up today, might next week However, I find no fault with anyone who does use a registry cleaner, that is their choice and so name calling is not necessary.

And I use the reg cleaner, there's a paradox for you CyberDoc Work that one out. You may need to use all your fingers though. I'm using CCleaner to clean up disk space, not to clutter it up with stuff I dont need!

What used to be a 5-star app is now a 2-star one because of this crap. To eaves To delay startup programs, try Startup Delayer. I've had a little trouble with this version and Windows 7x64 but certainly not enough to make me downgrade it.

I've been involved with computer programming and application development including alpha and beta testing since the mid seventies. I still learn new stuff every day and one of those things I am reminded of over and over again is how conceited and arrogant some users are.

Where would tomorrows geniuses come from without them. Use this application and make your and your computers day a little easier. Installed it on dozens of PC's, never had an issue with it.

The best cleaner there is, full stop. That's 'Period' to our friends over the pond. But it's only my guess, and I could be wrong. Other companies have for years made it difficult to even tell they do offer free versions.

However, I feel I should point out that with CCleaner there's no 'free version' as such. The program is free no matter what - if you click the pay button you're simply paying for the option of extended support.

The program, as always, is great quality and well worth 5 stars. Not sure I understand the need for a bit version, though. A cleaner program does exactly the same thing under x64 Windows as under x Been using it for years.

Only recommendation for them is on their website: There really should be an equally sized "Download for Free" next to the "Buy Online and Download" Currently, the free download links are in smaller print below the main box with the "Buy Online and Download" Before anyone panics about this being "payware".

Notice that link is for "Priority Support". You can still download the free version. I am very disappointed. It looks as if CCleaner formerly Crap Cleaner has decided to turn their very good software, which has been freeware for years, into payware.

Learning that they had come out with a version 3. Obviously they have decided to make some money off there software, nothing wrong with that, but it is disappointing that a free tool is no longer available.

I shall continue to use the older freeware version for awhile which I rate a 5, but I doubt I shall purchase their payware as I can do most of the things the software does in other ways at no cost.

But it was nice to have while it was available. Better to use and clean junk when you also have CCleanerEnhancer, be careful when using reg-cleaner - always look at the reg list, deselect entries you need, sometimes you see entries you may need that the program picks up.

In all great software, many other features then just cleaning junk, not the most powerful software but its free Literally the best program there is for cleaning the junk off a computer.

Nice well designed interface, lots of configuration options and useful tools. I was amazed at the amount of deleted files and registry entries that it found. For a free program you can't get any better than this.

Everyone should be using this. Better than most pay for cleaners. If or when I do I will post on here but so far adds good added functionality to CCleaner. If you have regular images of your C: Blaxima, I assume you have tried out CCEnhancer as you have just reviewed it.

It does come in a portable version and thats the one I've always used. I used to give it 5, but.. A great little program, I always recommend it to customers. I can't understand people marking it down for having no xspecific version - it's not needed for a utility like this, and to me it just shows the voters in question don't really know what they're talking about.

It works flawlessly on both 32 and 64 bit systems. Great cleaner, keeps improving, also check out FCleaner. Also works with no issues on 64 bit on Win 7.

Why people are having problems eludes me. And how about a little appreciation as this is a FREE program instead of a less that helpful attitude that some reviewers on here have, There isn't a free program to touch this..

Crash in Vista, I need a cleaner for a 64 bit system. I'm not willing to paying for software but I want to see that it actually works first. This is a very good program, works well for me with minor problems.

Also, they need to put out a X64 bit version of this as we have now waited quite long enough and still no X64 bit. Becuase they have no X64 bit and a few minor problems I can only give this three stars.

One of the best tool out there, however, I gave only 3 stars as the regcleaner is buggy. I used the jump to regkey function before deleting the value. It jumped there nicely, highlighting the chosen key.

I repeated this 6 or 8 times and sometimes it jumped to a different key. Now it raises the question whether it would delete the chosen key or another one. I tested it on only one language version of Windows, it might be O.

Removed from my system anyway. My rating is not so good because this tool has not so many features that other tools have for example profiles cleaning, regedit history cleaning, dom storage cleaning.

The "Improved Opera History cleaning" in 2. Anyway rate 5 and even more if would be possible. This is the only safe cleaner I have found for x64 systems both Vista and Win7. I have used other highly-regarded cleaners over many years, and they are now safe enough for WinXP bit, but the bit systems open up a new can of worms, and the others still do not cope with them very well.

Bottom line is that I use CCleaner only in Win7 bit, and do not regret it. The newest version 2. Great program, have had no problems with registry cleaner, garbage files are removed without any consequences thus far, works very well!

This program is excellent. It just plain works to cleanup temporary files and cookies. You can configure it to automatically run once at startup, which I do, but the default has this feature disabled.

CCleaner is such a great program and I am so thankful every time I use it that it is freeware. But I wish the developer would make a section for Wipe empty space and not keep it as another hidden feature.

Need to refine my previous post. Certainly deleting some files might have systemwide effect even if they are safe to delete and will be re-created. Thumbnail cleaning almost certainly will slow down your machine.

It must rebuild the cache of icon images used by Windows, which takes time after cleaning. Very user-friendly, won't slow your machine. Never had any problem with it. No cons for the moment.

I use 3 different aps to do what ccleaner does. More thorough and all portable. I love it, it really is a must have, however.. I have been waiting for along time for the developer to add "wipe empty space" option and he finally did, I think it should be more attached tool than an option, like a popup tool with user friendly interface, right now its just another option in ccleaner and its disabled by default.

The best piece of free clean-up software out there, I did have problems a couple of builds back but it now seems that was a bug connected with Firefox. If ya ran into problems then go to piriform.

Of course that makes it very safe and it can be trusted to do no harm, but I would really like to see that part of the program strengthened while still maintaining that safety and trustworthyness.

Ran into the compatibility view issue recently, annoying. Product seems to have slowed significantly with the last months worth of updates. CCleaner is an excellent disk cleaner which I prefer over all of the others I have tested.

It is used on a daily basis and I would feel sort of lost without it. The registry cleaner, however, is so weak it is almost useless. Thank you fileforum for providing the slim version without the toolbar.

This is a must have if you are running windows plain and simple! Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly. And yes I did contribute. They've gotten a little sloppy in the past 6 months.

Best safe jink cleaner ever seen, use it for years, without any problem, each new release is much better, thanks and keep good work.. I was wondering when someone would come out with selective restore point deletion.

I put this on every Windows machine I work on. That would be in the hundreds. I have yet to find it cause any problems at all. The latest version has a selective System Restore point removal tool I do un-installs from within this program, then run the registry cleaner to remove remnants the uninstalled program's uninstaller didn't remove.

I'm addicted to this wonderful utility! You must work for a competitor of CCleaner because CCleaner is one of the weakest registry cleaners out there, which BTW, makes it one of the safest ones also.

Your statement of having to reload your OS because of CCleaner is a little far fetched for me. I understand that it is possible but also highly unlikely.

This is great software and I use it at least 10 times a day to clean up the "crap". This application is the definition of a 5 star program. Pretty much the first non-MS thing that goes on any computer I get asked to "look" at.

I wish there was more support for swIron a chrome derivative. Never any problems out of this one. See a new feature was added, where you can delete old system restore points. Better know what you are doing before attempting to do such a thing.

Still, one of the best software on the market, bar none. CCleaner really botched up my system! Do not use the registry cleaner unless you know exactly what all of the files are.

I had to reinstall my OS because of this program! Terrific tool - this version takes a bit longer to scan the "system temporary files" but otherwise, no problems. Hey Steve - The wiping of free space takes care of the space from previously deleted files that may not have been overwritten multiple times.

It is just an extra security measure that is a great addition to CCleaner! There is a new option of "Wipe Free Space" Does anyone have a clue what that does for me? Works great IF your registry does not depend of patches or workarounds from Dell Support to boot up and function, if it does a C Cleaner sees these files as "wrong" for your registry then it will offer to delete them, and like most people, you don't know the difference and say "fix all problems" and there you are, your laptop will not boot up again.

It killed my wife's laptop. If your PC has been "fixed" by Dell, do not let this into your registry, it will take the workarounds away and you work be able to boot back up.

Just use the portable version like I do and you wan't even be prompted about yahoo then. One of the very few programs you should almost definitely not miss having installed on your Windows system.

No doubt the best cleaner, yet missing some features One of the very best at what it does. I think it is a great app, especially since you can download the SLIM version. Please keep up the good work.

After having used it once, you will wonder how you could have ever lived without it. It's fast, reliable and thorough in cleaning any unnecessary files or registry entries. An invaluable piece of software, and easily among the best freeware you can download.

CCleaner is by far the most thorough and efficient disk cleaner I have tested. It is indispensable when installing or uninstalling applications. The registry cleaner is a little weak when compared to others I have tested.

On the plus side however, it has proven to be very safe. The add-remove programs tool is very fast compared to the Windows XP tool. Unless you have downloaded the "slim" version be careful not to accidentally install the added Toolbar.

This app works well. The only feature that is lacking is the cleaning option to "move to recycling bin" in addition to the delete and secure delete options.

This would provide another layer of safety in the event that an item was clean that negatively effected the system or if a person changed their mind on the cleaning. After a few days when the system continued to work ok, the recycling bin could be emptied.

Fixed the corrupted fonts that the bad programmed game called "left 4 dead" made. This game changes the font locations from the normal windows fonts to its own folder. This killed my whole windows system One of the most essential tools for Windows PC's, freeware or shareware.

Cleans junk off of PC, and removes obsolete registry references without any mishaps whew! Works like a charm, great software! Definetly in my topmust-have applications for Windows.

Slim, clean and does a fantastic job! This is absolutely one of the greatest programs I'm running. I've already recommended this program to several of my friends and family members. It does what it says and I've never experienced a broken system due to the use of this software.

It's updated frequently and it's free. I would give it 6 if I could, I had been waiting for opera cookie management for long time, infinite thanks to the developers. The constant tweaking, improving, supporting of other apps is so impressive This works very well for cleaning out files, and also simple registry cleaning for bit entries.

However, I now run Vista x64, and it does not clean out the bit portion of the registry see the test file supplied by CleanMyPC http: Also, while very safe, CCleaner is not the most complete registry cleaner out there.

I supplement it with RegSupreme and sometimes others Wise, etc. But for what it does, it works well. Continues to work really well for me. A really great application. Nice to see forward planning on the part of the developers, in regard to supporting Windows 7 - Well Done.

Yup, the very best, I recommend this very much You will not find a better free cleaner anywhere.. The best there is, for sure. Does a great job of cleaning files, folders and the registry. It's customizable, as well, to cater to individual cleaning requirements.

Free on top of all this. What more can you ask for? It's working great, as always. I really think this program is pretty much the best app in its field.

I have always liked Easy Cleaner 2. Well done indeed, and thank you for still providing a SLIM version in your downloads section. Works great as always! Thats why there is Disk Cleanup.

Clean after other programs, no. Thats better suited for 3rd party programs. Isn't an operating system expected to clean up the mess created by itself and other softwares?

Not sure why this is, but it's a bug. Have been using this since Feb 08 I think. Awesome, awesome and awesome. Nice to see the added support for Chrome. It's right there on the screen as it has been in the past.

I snag the SLIM version and prefer it, and am glad they still offer it. It's free, it works great and would seem to be head-and-shoulders above any of the competition.

A 5 Rating for an excellent product and an excellent value. Personally, I haven't found anything better. Pointless and not relevant. Just check its web site more thorough.

I agree, simply the best. That's a good way of putting it because this fine utility is SIMPLE to use and they don't clutter up the interface adn add bloatware with each release like some other tool writers tend to do.

They just keep it up to date and fix any bugs. MSFT could learn a lot from these guys. Go to the Options, choose Include and add any directories that you tend to use for temporary files.

I've been using it for a long time and every release I've used has been good. Give em a few bucks for their hard work. Simply the best no cost disk cleaner around. Before you click the 'Buy Now' button for another utility, try CC first.

CC is flexable, complete and reliable. Throw in the ability to create custom inclusions and exclusions and you couldnt ask for anything more really. Here you can get the portable version.

Love it - wish it would "remember" the additional options selected during the previous install. Still missing some features Yea, Since when was the hotfix uninstaller removed! Down 2 points for removing a feature, and keeping it quiet!

This is an excellent tool. I depend on it almost daily to help out friends and family. Purging the junk out of the registry always seems to help when the are having issues.

I don't know why people say inane things like "the one and only tool in this area" because it's not, but it's free and relatively effective But you already knew that.

I won't give it a 5 because it has no command line support that I'm aware of, and it is very limited in how it does certain things for example, you can either delete all Flash cookies or none of them.

The registry cleaner component in CCleaner is the safest of its kind that I know of, however. Toolbar component is still included. Excellent software that gets even better with each version, yet avoids the bloat that so often accompanies new releases.

I have really come to rely on this program. I no longer use WinDoctor from Norton because it just doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. I still use EasyCleaner 2, which is also free, but it has not been updated much at all in recent times.

By contrast, CCleaner seems to be updated frequently. CCleaner is highly configurable, lets you choose which cookies to keep during a sweep, and I'm very glad to see they still offer the "Slim Version" for download in their Other Downloads section: It really does seem to be about as rock solid as I could wish for, and the fact that it is still free and offers so much value is pretty amazing.

Well done, and please, keep up the good work. The one and only Tool in this area! Other versions can be downloading her: I paypal'd also, but didn't receive advanced notice of this release.

Fast, efficient, lean, reliable. Each version gets better without getting bloated. I even sent in a PayPal donation. I love this app and use it at least once a week. Recently, i ran it and it cleaned over 2GB.

In the advanced section of options, you can clean more by un-checking the "only delete temp files older than 48 hours" box. Just reboot before running the cleaner if you do this.

Install apps tend to leave files used once at reboot in those folders, so best to make sure they've run. Typically saves an extra MB for me. They took out the option to install yahoo toolbar!

Now if we can get this to clean up the crap that works down in the cook county building The registry scan is not as thorough as it could be - both Easy Cleaner 2. Still, it's fast, reliable and functional - and free - so a solid 4 for this new release.

This utility is just perfect. The program seems just as fast as before to me. I notice that this version it takes a couple of sec more to start comparing with the v2. In spite of this once it's running it does the job very well.

Just keep it small and simple, just the way it already is. Use it on all computers I can find. ModderXManiac There is no such thing as an "good" registry cleaner, namely because it does nothing to remove most entries from the registry that reg cleaners remove, and it can potentially screw a lot up Anyone know the difference between the "slim" version, betanews lets you download and no "non slim" version you can download directly from the website?

I do computer maintenance around my town as a part-time job, and this is the first tool I turn to when speeding up a pc. It's an incredible time saver because most of us know how to do this stuff manually, but this does all the cleaning in a few simple clicks, securely even, which is worthy of a five alone.

I haven't touched built-in uninstall wizard in windows for nearly three years because of how much faster and flexible it is in CCleaner, and the start-up programs cleaner doesn't leave pop-ups upon next reboot unlike msconfig, it just deletes the registry key!

My only complaint is how much the registry cleaner misses when compared to dedicated programs like Eusing or Regseeker, but it does well enough for being packed together with so many other useful tools.

Every Windows-power computer on the internet should have this program. I recommend it as a PC Hobbyist and Professional. Very simple, clean program make sure you install the 'slim' version.

Works fast and well, I use it as an 'advanced' user, by I always install this for other regular non-computer people to use as a one-stop-shop cleaning program. There are a lot of cleaners too much, but no one does its job like CCleaner, and you could believe me, because i tried the most of them!

Couldn't be more excited that this now includes Firefox 3 support. However, with the recent changes to the way Firefox stores history, and how the history can be accessed via the "Awesome Bar," I would generally hesitate to clean my FF3 history since I've got nothing to hide.

Great cleaning program that insures your files you want are truly deleted and overwritten on HD. I would sugeest NSA setting of 7 passes. The best is getting better, but I'm still waiting for one more function This company makes some great software.

Looking forward to their defraggler stuff and recuva is already a winwin. A very good, and ever improving free tool. This tool combined with Easy Cleaner and Norton WinDoctor get about everything that needs to be gotten in most cases.

I hate it when programs need to be installed when they will run as a portable ap. Get a clue already. No, you can install newer versions over the top of older versions, without having to uninstall.

If you do uninstall an old version first, you will lose your existing settings. When will they release an internal updater for the program itself? Still I give it 5, a must have.

This behavior is exactly as expected. The "C" in this means "C"rap. It cleans everthing in secure so all internet security programs work more easily faster stable and your operating system. Dont remove "48 hours" check you may not go back to past anymore I mean there will be no System restore files and dont put a check "hot fix uninstallers".

Rootkit searcher or viewer. Using the program since years, I always would give it five stars, but meanwhile I noticed: Cleaning 2,3GB lasts 23 passes, a bit slow 2. Difficulties deinstalling MSI-programs Sorry, but therefore only four stars.

I started using it when found myself unable to properly cleand index. This little app saved my day It looks like the 'secure deletion of Recycle Bin in Vista' is finally resolved. This is one utility you really cannot live without.

Interesting about the secure deletion not working from recycle bin, as mentioned by the chap below. I gota test it out and see myself. All I need now is Vista. Yes, it's free AND it cleans out your registry, etc.

However, don't get TOO comfortable that it is indeed securely erasing your files, assuming you have it set to do so. Files securely erased with another utility, such as 'Eraser' are not recoverable with the same recovery utility.

This is the only weak link I have found in CCleaner, but it has been there and reported to the author for at least a couple of years now Keep it up, Piriform! CCleaner rocks, as always!

Like others have said before, the authors of this program truly deserves their donations! Incredible set of features! Here's 6 out of 5 stars: I have no pity for those who just click through without watching what they are doing.

I will never install these toolbars but don't blame the developer for trying to be compensated for maybe one tenth of his personal time. I don't mind the Yahoo bar: I simply don't install it, since yeah, I can choose not to.

Author needs to live off smth too, doesn't he? I agree with Phusion about the addition of the Yahoo Toolbar. I don't want it. But setup allows you to deselect this undesirable feature, so i do.

I don't mind the software author making a bit of cash by adding the toolbar to his software, but the selection of the toolbar should not be the default.

To make this software a "5" again, the author should make the toolbar an option the installer needs to select. The box next to the toolbar selection should be empty until the person installing the software adds the checkmark.

This software, as written, is definitely a 4. No clue why anyone would rate this gem less than a '5', given that it's THE best 'customizable' system cleaner, bar none, and it's FREE on top of that. What else do you want, whipped cream on your strawberries?

Great app, it does clean out all the nasty files sitting in your temp directories, which eat up space and sometimes harbor spam and malware - but they need to clean their own crap, why include the Yahoo toolbar in the set up?

I've been using this app for several years and it does the trick. I use this everyday along with regseeker. These three pretty much keep my system XP clean. Add perfectdisk for defragging and I have clean and fast.

I give it a 5 - would be a 10 if that was possible. A 5 it is because it does clean much but still not everything. I still use other small programs to get rid of all junk files that accumulate. XP just has too much junk and it is always adding crap on its own.

CC is definetly my first program that I run to start cleaning crap. CC has always been great, but this version works with 64 bit OS. It now gives the run extensions a right click of the recycle bin.

Only 32 bit had that before. Atta boy, 5 is as high as I can go. Best cleaner, a must for every Windows users. And you can cuztomize it too. You can add files or folder that you want to delete everytime you run this beast.

You can specify folders to exclude and to include. It's in the Options section. I'm faily sure you can include or exclude types of file too, I'll have a look. For me this is the best cleaner of its type.

Tell you the truth, zridling, the term "crud" Create, Retrieve, Update and Delete comes from 'nix. Please give a small donation to the author so this incredible app doesn't go shareware like so many others when they hit 2.

I never had any problems whatsoever with this and I recommend it except maybe for the infamous prefetch option, but it's ticked off by default. And it can actually make your PC faster: I've seen computers with MB of cached files.

Ok, so there are many other ways to clean internet cache, but CCleaner does it and a lot more in one click. I too have used this software for several years and I've installed it on hundreds of computers with no issues whatsoever.

Because of a simple reason; it cleans a lot and doesn't screw your system. It is one of the few that doesn't screw anything at all provided your Windows is partially up to date, and it's not the other soft's problem.

I have been using this software for several years now and it is excellent and it has never made my system unstable. It perhaps is one of the best cleaners around and it does a good job.

If your system is unstable, then YOU did something to make it that way. As to the yahoo toobar, you do not have to install that portion unless you wish too.

It does what it is suppose to do. I've been learning to configure it further through the winapp2. These thousands of lousy tools won't make your system any faster, but they will make it unstable!

The new GUI is modern, polished, and professional looking. The exclusion features and portability made an already excellent application shine. Use of the winapp2. CCleaner is an excellent program!

So I'd need to go through the hassle of set up. What good software can I use to create a wiring diagram for a control cabinet? Viper-7 he reviewed a rebadged version of my unit https: With pre-made objects like relays etc.

P Viper-7 it has issues, but none that really impact me, and was significantly cheaper, which made it feasible - and i certainly prefer having a DSO to an old analog blown Viper-7, what did you get blown lol Viper-7 hantek-dsob blown nice blown so it cheap mate?

What do you mean by control cabinet? Are you looking to create a diagram illustrating a circuit? Or all of the wiring within the cabinet volume? Or a block diagram?? Viper-7 at the same price Viper-7 Johnsen: Viper-7 you're paying aliexpress, not the sellers.

Johnsen oh right Viper-7 if they do, i doubt your credit card will be the juicyest pick: A diagram illustrating a circuit. Johnsen anyway i'll see in a few orders when i get tired of entering visa Viper-7 Johnsen: You are less than an ant.

Viper-7 sure, but the concern here isnt about an individual's security Johnsen anyway if i get hacked i know where to find you ;: Assuming aliexpress did not screw anyone in 10 years is insane.

Yet, I challenge you to find such an issue online. Any clever virus knows to not be greedy. Those are the normal stats in remote ordering things. Haxxa is this achievable? Johnsen use the relay: Viper-7 technically it was the sellers mistake Viper-7 but Viper-7 well, he got exactly what he paid for Johnsen i still have to open an ethernetted power socket Johnsen a gembird pm2-lan or so Viper-7 also lol at my "but I had a pair of A4 Techs about 2x10W 10 years ago, they are unobtainable now Johnsen i cant remember what it was about tho Viper-7 i ran out of unwatched media yesterday so i started watching his old teardowns and such Johnsen muted they're fine Viper-7 better than turning on the tv.

Viper-7 he doesnt turn anything on before he strips it down: D Viper-7 more mechanical stuff than electronics tho Viper-7 power tools and such Johnsen ah: Johnsen yeh teardowns have to start with the device working LeEarl Jsama!

Johnsen earl-san LeEarl what is bossing today? Brisance what protocol they use? Johnsen i have 5 or 6 nonswitch rotary encoders somewhere i already cant find anymore LeEarl it turned into rusk now!

Usually it can't sense standby current, and it may even mistakenly go off in long breaks in music. Viper-7 lol "I am sure it the right thing you need now. Don't hesitate, bid now and never miss it.

Johnsen lol Johnsen then i can as well steal 5V usb from some devboard LeEarl or that. LeEarl mobile charger is 5v Johnsen i have boards connected to wallwarts, but they're hidden under my mess LeEarl 5v and 12v are so easy to get.

LeEarl Johnsen, can u show us ur mess? Johnsen telenet Viper-7 i had an old junker atx power supply at either end of my desk heh jerrrry what is a good rechargable battery for messing around with breadboard?

I had a pair of those old speakers, you still use those? LeEarl nice mess there esp. D Johnsen no jerrrry 9V rechargeable? Johnsen jerrrry yes, but if you read the specs you'll find that at 1AA the current is lower Johnsen for mA they advice to use 2x AA jerrrry okay Viper-7 i also use a few old 7.

P Johnsen like a single "power bank"? Johnsen they should output 5v on the usb plug Viper-7 meh jerrrry i was thinking about lithium option as well, but when you mess around on breadboard it is not uncommon to short things: P Johnsen personally i'd just go for a wallwart and a tbh batteries jerrry: P Johnsen they may be handy too Johnsen if you mean the vregs you push into the BB Johnsen with the 3.

It will help u a lot in desk space saving. LeEarl forgot the name even though LiloMani mentioned it few times! Does and Adafruit PowerBoost C look like it fits the task?

Johnsen ive seen them, but personally i find 1A charging too much Johnsen it means you most likely need to identify with your nick, or the channel is moderated or so jerrrry batteries looks good..

Only reason I'd choose the Adafriut thing over something like that from Ali, is because it handles both charging and discharging. Johnsen i dont wanna charge a mAh lipo with 1A, so you'd have to change the resistor on the board already etc jerrrry that can be shorted without setting anything on fire Johnsen lol Johnsen single cell lipo shorted between my fingers: I think it was for finishing but very useful.

Anything below C is acceptable. P Johnsen with a solar panel: LeEarl linuxthefish, how can u control the charge amperage? Johnsen amperage woop LeEarl rate: Search for item, sort by orders and select only 'top rated'.

Then look at seller ratings. Johnsen lol Johnsen i have drawers Viper-7 jerrrry: Johnsen looks like he has 2 diamonds: P Viper-7 and no, im not a seller: P Nelson1 Viper-7 my phone's micro usb charging port is bit tight so i need to exert a slight pressure to put the cable in it.

Johnsen errr LeEarl some ali merchants are cheaters Johnsen all his negative comments are all about "men's sexy boxers underwear" LeEarl they put a picture of an item then send another.

Viper-7 diamonds are reliable Johnsen i think they were just not as sexy as he described Nelson1 hope i am not breaking it Viper-7 Viper-7 even 1 is ok jerrrry Viper-7 hmm I see.. Johnsen seems i dont have to worry its just the same ppl doing multiple complaints Viper-7 for quite a while i thought the connector on my cheap china phone was dodgy batteries Can I see a link to what you're looking at getting on Ali?

LeEarl there are covers that turn your existing phone into one if supported! So they know it by the nickname and not the model number. BTW is there any issue if the port or cable is tight?

Johnsen hey thats my url! LeEarl password2, nope it is just like I said. Johnsen breadboard friendly currents: Johnsen nah you should just shut up: Viper-7 if its a fresh cable with still no click, either the socket is super cheap, or is getting full of crud: P Johnsen in the 2 hours im doubting 20 more of those cx10s were ordered batteries Johnsen: With a price difference like that, I would personally recommend getting the more expensive ones, or perhaps order a single cheap one to test?

Johnsen i already have a bunch of nonheadelss cx10s, some work good, others a bit less Viper-7 i've placed maybe 10 orders on aliexpress that i knew were nonsense LeEarl I found rubbing alcohol great for cleaning mobiles.

Viper-7 aliexpress always cancelled the order and refunded me before the seller could do anything Viper P Viper-7 worth a go: Johnsen exactly Johnsen so better grab this chance: I don't need a lot of amps, mA fuse will be fine batteries K, go for it Johnsen: Viper-7 based on my personal experiences Johnsen perhaps Johnsen then i'll know Johnsen after 45 days i get money back anyway: LeEarl I got me some of these for happy breadboarding www.

Viper-7 4 motors, basic 2. Viper-7 desoldering a few of the pin headers made it vaguely usable, but i also very rarely have dc barrel power supplies at hand, and not something more easily breadboarded batteries This is what stops me from getting any breadboard power supply module.

It's so unlikely that it fits. LeEarl u can also use dupont male-female jumpers. LeEarl these are very useful when breadboarding breakout boards. LeEarl that kind that does not fit on the breadboard.

Viper-7 i normally use small pcb mount screw terminal blocks, to accept stripped wires from old computer molex power splitters, into an ATX PSU batteries Viper Viper-7 just wasting a lot of time on it LeEarl use one to control the voltage and another to control the current.

Do you not use a battery charger like the IMAX? Viper-7 this was a once off Viper-7 i dont normally use such batteries batteries What do you use? What did they use?

But I want something I made. P Viper-7 how to do it with lm, why lm isnt really ideal for it, what is, how to do that, etc: P batteries Useful, Imma watch those. D LeEarl yeah Dave is great.

LeEarl Brisance, for hobbyists and students. These are the same specs I'd like to have. Viper-7 yes, specifically password2 theres an opensource digital 1A psu design from eevblog guy password2 you can swap out the linear regulator for a more beefy 3A password2 and you can put multiple in parrallel batteries paralleling LDO's isn't a good idea.

Haxxa Hi Guys, installing small 3" dining room speakers about 10 meteres away from amp - what size cable should I use - considering 14ag at the moment Viper-7 neither: P batteries Then wait.

P Johnsen suzies Viper-7 thats why i'm not building or buying atm ; Johnsen network is slow again at work Johnsen my youtube keeps buffering: Johnsen ye, almost Johnsen http: Johnsen in diff colors aethersis hi, remember me talking about equalizers yesterday?

I figured out this problem on my own: Johnsen kickdrums are the most important drums: I was referred to and chatted with a guy from muff wiggler Brisance will build him a prototype aethersis and then I just add the outputs from these band pass filters that share common input and are connected in paralell Johnsen i just need noise with tone control: Johnsen did you try adding extern: How much could a customer do on the spot anyway?

Johnsen just having a function returning the value from that sourcefile instead of making vars extern i mean Grievre mun: Johnsen no idea Johnsen hobby amounts of c Johnsen and a bit of ruby Johnsen and asm: SpeedEvil In general, probably under a microamp anon speedevil less, than a microampers of leaking current, right?

Johnsen kilo pampers evilroots looking for CAD software that is free for electronics blown kicad Storyteller oh, Idid find several kits for making a temp controlled iron anon qucs?

Storyteller basically the or similar with no transformer or housing Viper-7 Storyteller: I used something like that in high school Johnsen you know when you copy ebay urls you can cut everythng off after the item number Storyteller yeah, I usually do Storyteller just slipped my mind Johnsen: Johnsen with a frequency doubler electrostatic apparently this is how most green lasers are made https: Johnsen i guess an xtal followed by an IR filter Johnsen but im not into optics aethersis crystal for second harmonic generation aethersis and prism for splitting the beam by 2 harmonics aethersis and alternatively a filter or something that will absorb the f and the 2f will be passed through aethersis I mean you will always end up with 2 harmonics Johnsen i dont do harmonics password2 you need substantial amount of IR to make you blind Johnsen ok password2 because if your is not sensitive to it its not sensitive to it password2: I'm not sure about it but it can basically permit IR light jerrrry is there a tiny mA switch fuse?

Johnsen i assume even a few mW laser can make you blind if they had the proper optics to focus narrow enough aethersis yup jerrrry not much bigger than glass fuses Johnsen but thats not gonna be the plastic lenses on china laserpointers SpeedEvil Johnsen: SpeedEvil the other one may not lase Johnsen i tried to burn stuff with 5mW and as narrow as possible beam but nothing happened: Johnsen with the dsp?

Johnsen i have a complete lack of math knowledge: Johnsen not sure electrostatic aethersis: Johnsen pastebin has been categorised as pastebin and hence blocked aethersis what?

Johnsen my work really thinks they can stop the leaking of company info like this Johnsen but they dont block usb sticks or any other uploads or so Johnsen its plain BS aethersis well, it's a good thing because workers could share code through this which is kinda stupid if you do something top notch security SpeedEvil It's probably to stop fuckheadedness rather than actual intent Johnsen put a couple of dutch guys in authority positions and this is what you get ;pp SpeedEvil People pastebinning collegues secret stuff not going internally anon jerrry wait for a minute.

SpeedEvil It's actually a real probelm Johnsen nah i think they're worried for leaking new product specs etc Johnsen i work in a company that makes things: Johnsen im confused on what "sign in with QR code" is on ali Johnsen he cool, i scan qr on phone and the desktop website logs on jeffree not cool batteries Any idea what power rating an ATX PSU from the Pentium 4 era would be?

Johnsen its so long ago we forgot jeffree chech your scrollback password2 jeffree: I don't have access to the PC's. Johnsen after that you didnt say anything anymore electrostatic an very, very high voltage thyristor password2 hah.

Johnsen i am getting interested in a 3D printer Johnsen but my wallet isn't yet batteries I'm working on a design from scratch, I do not recommend it, I started with 0 knowledge, and now I know it down to the bits and bytes.

I also know all the horrible decisions I made to get where I am, and don't want to finish it. Johnsen i wouldn't DIY tho Johnsen i may put it together from kit, but no interest in making my own design archivist batteries, because a lot of the designs are terrible batteries Johnsen, I agree, go for kit, diy has been awful, I've sunk more money into it than I intended, but I'm commited now.

Johnsen lol Johnsen anyway brb smoke anon what is the bjt transistor base to collector capacity? Grievre capacitance you mean? What would you think is better? I think it actually varies depending on how the transistor is biased anon grievre load is under the collector anon I mean approximately.

JPG made this http: Johnsen woop my colleague bought a car Snert a bluetooth module that is not installed? Johnsen shes 34 now she decided its time to get a licence batteries I'd guess BT as well password2 i do have BT though ekarlso mppme wamma link me one?

Snert ok Snert then it's a mystery Johnsen until now she had to do all her shopping and moving etc on public transport dragging 2 small kids along batteries Probably uses the PCB antenna and has the antenna port uused.

Snert I think the antennas come from the lid. Snert but why they go nowhere at the logic board is weird Johnsen locally i pay between 20 and 30ct for a cd ic Phil-Work yeh, 15c seems reasonable Johnsen 40ct in rare cases ggVGc Johnsen: Johnsen i did that too, but at the local 25ct average per ic Johnsen and not 50 per piece Johnsen 15 to 20 ggVGc Johnsen: Johnsen do you need to liquid cool it?

Johnsen ye smeding it uses delay gates to get that effective resolution Johnsen but even for that a 4. Johnsen this thing you're talking about smeding no, it's a peripheral specific to the stm32f3x4 product line, i think Johnsen i see smeding the 'high-resolution timer' smeding what i imagine they do is have a clock, and the same clock delayed by ps or so, etc.

So if I ran them at Grievre My question is: Grievre It seems like the answer should be yes but I'm not sure smeding approximately, i think Grievre sorry let me ask directly: Johnsen i dont think that thing has a very stable load attached?

Grievre So my house has this number sign on the front that was there when the house was built and the way it's designed it steps down mains to 12V AC and then runs two automotive lamps in series so it lights up a very dim amber Johnsen how do most ppl make their 3D enclosures these days?

Username3 smending, how about for designing 2d drawings? Grievre I've heard of people doing it smeding Username3: I've had so many issuse 3d printing I want to start laser cutting everything Username3 I really should have just bought a more exspensive prebuilt 3d printer Either my abs prints warp or comeoff the heat bed.

I just use PLA. Much easier to get a decent print anon in cuk invertor we need huge capacitor, right? Johnsen what show did you expect? Johnsen no idea Johnsen i avoid things with inductors: Is that just due to conducting the charge before it has met with more resistance through the resistive element?

Johnsen blown is drunk on beer instead of religion, but the end result is pretty similar: Username3 oofta, a text editor in 3d software? Johnsen yes Johnsen not sure about current smeding Username3: Johnsen experience no, tries it, yes Johnsen tried Johnsen o once lirc'd on a rpi Inkrement veek: How to change the duration of a command in LIRC?

Johnsen that i dont know: Ok, but that isn't useful to me at the moment: P I'm still just learning components Johnsen which reminds me i need to bring out 5v from my cheap saleae clone to attach tsops etc Inkrement Haven't even started on circuits yet veek Johnsen, so what do all the kumars do at your company?

Inkrement I understand what you mean, but I have no context to pair that with Johnsen contracting stuff that was too expensive locally i assume Brisance did a layout for front panel for the prototype unit, printed to use as drill template veek Johnsen, programming?

Johnsen and ruining stuff because of miscommunication and lack of proper skills Inkrement Brisance: Brisance a drum module prototype for eurorack blockh34d Inkrement: Johnsen ha, seems you're ready for the next step: D Johnsen i have msp stm8 and stm32 and once you know how to set a reg its all pretty similar gurki ya blockh34d i think i'd still start with an arduino ldc mi primer drag soldering https: P Johnsen also with fancy and expensive components, the idiots'll just get more stuck up blockh34d gurki: P Johnsen i hate keil blockh34d theres no wrong OS Johnsen and does it even support stm8?

D Johnsen because you're a keil fanboy? P Johnsen fecking colleague screwed things up and now he went home gurki yay Johnsen if someone wants to trade coleagues let me know blockh34d Johnsen: D blockh34d your dog will be running from this cat blockh34d he's tough Johnsen lol Johnsen oh boy Johnsen my dog doesnt do things to cats really blockh34d mine either, especially now that they have learned better Johnsen first day i had dog from shelter at 6yo the neighbour cat came running to my dog blockh34d i have two dogs and two cats Johnsen it never did to my other dogs blockh34d the cats are the muscle of the equation Johnsen so the dog must have looked peaceful Johnsen it doesnt like humans that much tho Johnsen rottweilers can be very nice, or very stubborn, you gotta be lucky with them gurki hum.

Johnsen i dunno Johnsen sdcc is good enough for me blockh34d Johnsen: Brisance and use the 9mm pots for the production version blown hi Johnsen the idea of having a piece of coiled wire storing energy is quite special: Johnsen smps are overrated: AC could vary a bit and not significantly affect the DC, AND power could go out and the generator would still be spinning Johnsen hehe didnt know that Johnsen i thought i saw it in huge transmitter sites too but not sure Johnsen i mean saw on youtube splud I believe a rheostat is a large wire-wound variable resistor.

Used in old style car dimmers and on crappy light dimmers for household wiring. Brisance I wonder if I should include large supply caps in the module Inkrement I don't see how you can affect one without affecting the other Johnsen: Johnsen like adding inductors or caps over your rectifier bridge Johnsen inductors not over the bridge Brisance nono, separate module I am currently building a prototype of, for eurorack Brisance to be sent to USA to be evaluated Johnsen ok Brisance will add reverse polarity protection and all that too splud Inkrement: Brisance I also added overdrive to the knock part splud Total current used remains the same.

Brisance who the hell uses pots to control big currents directly anyway Brisance you use a buffer for that splud Yea, seems like you'd use pot to drive the base of a transistor.

Inkrement I thought pots resisted voltage which resisted current Inkrement I guess though, technically that isn't correct Inkrement Well, wait though Brisance pots are resistors and this is where ohms law comes in Brisance no need to make up terms ; Inkrement Free electrons also contribute to electric fields, don't they?

LambdaComplex Voltage is potential. You can't resist voltage. Inkrement Awesome that qwebirc does it, but I need to do it for my home IRC client as well Johnsen blinkenshell woop Johnsen i used to go there until they banned me, then unbanned me but never restored access to my account splud Is getting banned a badge of honour?

Johnsen so you'll have malware every time you start something in wine? I thought you were postulating about Age of Empires Johnsen anyway same crap splud Yah, sorry, Johnsen did so much really change between verisons that you need to pay half a monthloan instead of just getting v2 for free veek ah!

Johnsen 10 more mins Johnsen just enough for 1 god youtube veek heh i gtg too, TV - tell the kumars I said hi Johnsen ok: Brisance if I decide I need yet another one, I will get that too Johnsen lm are nice for the fact that they can hit the bottom rail on single supply Johnsen not the top rail Brisance oh, cool Brisance didnt know that Brisance they wont be near the bottom in my application though Johnsen: Brisance because my bottom is V: P blockh34d hey i'm just saying, why scare off the newbies Johnsen: Storyteller like learning to progam using brainfuck P blockh34d if i had said 'no this computer sucks i want a better computer to work on', i would still be waiting blockh34d tia Storyteller while experience is a good teacher, bad experience teaches you bad practices blockh34d bad practices are better than no practices Storyteller you are correct, but to a point Storyteller um, no thats my point gurki a guy with experience back from tia struggles with atmel studio?

I have this powersupply at home http: I know it is sense for the 3. Can I connect it to common ground at terminals? Thanks for any advice Brisance nah, if newbs get scared off first day they won't probably be good in any case Brisance electronics need a strong mind Brisance and you can't be intimidated by things like that Brisance if you are you should try knitting or something blockh34d Brisance: Brisance actually having panel mount pots is a bit more of a hassle, but makes PCB design much easier, you can stop your signal path anywhere and continue at another place, kinda like teleportation OutOfNicks robopal: P currently thinking about single layer since it's gonna be a homeetch prototype OutOfNicks robopal: P robopal OutOfNicks, ok I don't think it means Ohm the pin to ground and use your eyes to follow the trace.

Does it join up with main board ground? Snert I dunno what it is, but it's not an unused ground pin. Johnsen woo, chinese 3v to kV sparkthingies in my mailbox Johnsen lets feel if its really kv: OutOfNicks also is pfd nescessary to connect?

Johnsen then its not completely dead yet theBear and i can barely feel that foot Johnsen thats a good sign theBear you tell the neurosurgeons that password2 deglove? Johnsen it fell off: Johnsen those caused the alarm?

Johnsen derka derka Slade theBear, you dont got no sat-is-faction! Johnsen havent seen that in ages here password2 hah safesearch dont work with 3letter game Chillum theBear: I got a good wife, she only asks me for luvin Johnsen lol password2 swap out the pain killers password2 i got no love Johnsen i dont have paionlillers, but at my work among 30 ppl theres always someone that needs one but never brings them Slade theBear, seriously.

Johnsen 33 Johnsen thatys when trouble styarts password2 meh Johnsen 35 if youre lucky password2 so in a year my troubles start password2 jk: P Johnsen 25 if you're thebear: RoChess theBear, no option to get one of those steeringwheel control units?

Inkrement How the shit does a potentiometer cut voltage when resistors are only able to cut current? Inkrement I made a statement saying that resistors reduce voltage which in turn reduces current produced throughout a circuit Inkrement He said I was an idiot and that resistors don't affect voltage password2 it depends on the situation SpeedEvil Your initial statement is not completely correct.

I always second guess myself: Inkrement Point a to point b? Inkrement I haven't covered series vs parallel yet password2 so between them the voltage would be D password2 now if you make the first resistor bigger and the second one smaller Inkrement so first 5k second 1k?

Inkrement Between the two? Brisance same thing password2 yeah, its the same thing basically Brisance not principle Inkrement I'm really not a fan of the way my book is going about explaining these things Inkrement I keep second guessing myself password2 heh Brisance look at a resistor across rails as a voltage gradient you can tap in with a wiper Inkrement Rheostat: Used in a series with a load and a voltage source, varies the amperage password2 do losta thought experiments smeding a rheostat is a variable resistor Inkrement Pot: Ends are connected across the voltage source.

Taps off part of the voltage Inkrement Right Inkrement That I know smeding your distinction is artificial Inkrement They aren't my distinctions: Brisance also mess around with this: Apparently it's British and not American.

Brisance what's the american long tailed pair then? Brisance they dont use differential amps? Brisance well but theres other kinds of differential pairs kludge I know. Micron3DP is being kinda squirrelly about payment for programming work i did blockh34d i would recommend people avoid that company, dont do work for them, dont buy their products.

Are you near them? Inkrement BBB the shit outta that blockh34d kludge: Yeah, BBB might be a solution, or something similar. Inkrement I have no idea what smoothieware is blockh34d Inkrement: D password2 i've found a foundamental issue i have with opensource software, but i dont know how to overcome it password2 its more of a good thing and a bad thing blockh34d the modifications i made were non-trivial blockh34d it was a substantial amount of effort Inkrement Written in C?

I ran into so much undefined behavior blockh34d password2: It made no sense either, but then, undefined behavior isn't supposed to make sense, soo Inkrement Teach me oh great sensai password2 i believe you blockh34d Inkrement: Inkrement hi zigggggy zigggggy hi Inkrement: D zigggggy i like your clever usage of 'k' blockh34d Inkrement: I can't tell Inkrement blockh34d: It's already set to impersonation level credentials anyway.

You're forced to authenticate before you can even access WMI on a remote node Inkrement blockh34d: I am stuck inside trying to get Sun to sell me a computer.

Johnsen my spark generator does nothing zigggggy does it spark? I can't get a RoHS-free Dell, for one thing. But we may just get a Dell R if Sun can't sell us anything.

They finally called, they will send me an estimate! Johnsen no i just got it Johnsen anyway at mA current limit it only has 0. And you want to rent one? But the anritsu people are less friendly.

Johnsen nice yelling Brisance whats a kindle? Johnsen lol password2 Johnsen: Johnsen l freifunk i found it not so really good to buy a expensiv JoeLlama I know the LiIon password2 i was thinking about a deluxe hobo stove to ignites itself Johnsen lol JoeLlama oops battery: I haven't been here in a terribly long time.

Good to see that you're still here. RF gear is fun to make! Johnsen rf woop, i can send RF with my sparks now: I would try the hamfest in frankfurt. Johnsen its like a radio gathering where ppl sell stuff kludge No, I don't even mean frankfurt.

I mean amateurfunk termine flohmarkete friedrichshafen P Johnsen yes but the buttons alone are worth more: But it is a big step to go from a dip meter to a VNA. Johnsen brisance i'm scared of my own kV chinese kV generator: East coast of the US, in a very small town.

My wife won't let me go to the friedrichshafen hamfest. Brisance vertical yields results for the ones that are wide and on their side Brisance I need phono Brisance for making money Johnsen http: I'm trying to buy a Sega game cartridge from the UK, but the seller says royal mail has prohibitions as far as Romania goes.

Their page even says "plastics" and "textiles" are prohibited, which sounds ridiculous: Thank you good sir! Well, look at the sweep circuit, there isn't a lot to go wrong on those.

So many problems on those scopes are fixed by cleaning tube sockets, switches, and pots. Johnsen a can of what exactly? Johnsen nothing like alkalines: Johnsen i miss rai uno and tve from the old days: Brisance sure it is, but I didnt make the eurorack customary plug Brisance I would have used a common ground and bananas for modular synths kludge beanbag-: The problem is they are not in very high concentrations anywhere.

The end result means you can mine them just about any place where labour is cheap. Inkrement I saw it somewhere Snert bad boys rape our young girls but violet gives willingly. Black boys rape our your girls behind victory garden walls.

Bright whts going on Inkrement Bright: P Snert oh wow. You'll have some part you can't put traces on, of course. You got an output power in dBm. You got path loss in dB. You got antenna gain in dBi on each end.

No wonder your receiver needs dBm to lock. That is a vast amount of bandwidth. You want to hire a telecom consultant like Howard Hallikanen to call the tower owners?

I think that means just add 25 to whatever the value of the rheostat is at the time to get the I Johnsen i made an account on a chinese website, i got: Congreguation, Your account has been created successfully.

Inkrement You're fucked dude Inkrement It's too late for you Johnsen: Hire Howard then, he is very good. Inkrement Everyone wave goodbye to Johnsen Inkrement Sad, sad day Johnsen salugregions to you Inkrement Ha ha berndj does one get stabilized toasters?

He is an old broadcast consultant, also does point to point microwave work, is very good. LeEarl how to turn a crystal into resonator or vice-versa? LeEarl no talkers just walkers!

LeEarl kreteks time then! D jaguar-e does anyone wonder why I'm here? LeEarl there something that looks like a cube can and another kinda oval. Brisance still messing with the module design Brisance should actually simulate the CV part before I go test it tomorrow LeEarl https: LeEarl jaggz-e, my question is similar to that guy question in the link u posted!

Kokain damn, its been a while since I've been here jaggz-e LeEarl: LeEarl yes and different names! Kokain I guess I haven't had anything to botch repair recently probably thats why jaggz-e LeEarl: Brisance probably cut it out of acrylic Brisance LeEarl non crystalline solid Brisance a specific structure Brisance such as plastic usually is LeEarl ok thank u all LeEarl so to turn a 1MHz crystal into oscillator the cube one with 4 legs what should I do?

LeEarl I just add to caps? LeEarl Brisance, u drew that? Brisance yeah Brisance it will be a drill and cut template jaggz-e http: Brisance print yes, then tape to acrylic or whatever I will use for front panel and use it to align holes Brisance I used the front panel express tool jaggz-e heh..

I got all components but the 74xxx ic! If I go as far as ICs then I better just order that cube oscillator! Brisance when my module will be accepted and I shall manufacture it, I need a proper one designed LeEarl it is probably lot cheaper.

Brisance get one low voltage capable one Hyratel so Hyratel do you use it similar to a BJT? LeEarl Brisance, and low voltage being?! Brisance say 12V Brisance or 24 LeEarl 12v that is pretty nice. Brisance look for space charge tubes Brisance nah, as easy as 12, just dual sec transformer: P LeEarl and it is used just like a transistor?

So try it but expect weird things.

What more could one ask for? It's a reliable source of high end tech without the wait. Gaussmeters and teslameters are magnetometers that measure in units of gauss or tesla, in some contexts, magnetometer is the term used for an instrument that measures fields of less than 1 millitesla and gaussmeter is used for those measuring greater than 1 mT.

There are two types of magnetometer measurement. Vector magnetometers measure the components of a magnetic field. Total field magnetometers or scalar magnetometers measure the magnitude of the magnetic field.

Magnetometers used to study the Earths magnetic field may express the components of the field in terms of declination. Absolute magnetometers measure the magnitude or vector magnetic field, using an internal calibration or known physical constants of the magnetic sensor.

Relative magnetometers measure magnitude or vector magnetic field relative to a fixed but uncalibrated baseline, also called variometers, relative magnetometers are used to measure variations in magnetic field.

Magnetometers may also be classified by their situation or intended use, stationary magnetometers are installed to a fixed position and measurements are taken while the magnetometer is stationary.

Portable or mobile magnetometers are meant to be used while in motion, laboratory magnetometers are used to measure the magnetic field of materials placed within them and are typically stationary.

The performance and capabilities of magnetometers are described through their technical specifications, major specifications include Sample rate is the amount of readings given per second.

The inverse is the time in seconds per reading. Sample rate is important in mobile magnetometers, the sample rate, bandwidth or bandpass characterizes how well a magnetometer tracks rapid changes in magnetic field.

Proximity sensor — A proximity sensor is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact. A proximity sensor often emits a field or a beam of electromagnetic radiation.

The object being sensed is often referred to as the proximity sensors target, different proximity sensor targets demand different sensors. For example, a capacitive or photoelectric sensor might be suitable for a plastic target, the maximum distance that this sensor can detect is defined nominal range.

Some sensors have adjustments of the range or means to report a graduated detection distance. Some know these process as thermosensation, proximity sensors can have a high reliability and long functional life because of the absence of mechanical parts and lack of physical contact between sensor and the sensed object.

Proximity sensors are used on smartphones to detect accidental touchscreen taps when held to the ear during a call. They are also used in machine vibration monitoring to measure the variation in distance between a shaft and its support bearing and this is common in large steam turbines, compressors, and motors that use sleeve-type bearings.

International Electrotechnical Commission defines the technical details of proximity sensors, a proximity sensor adjusted to a very short range is often used as a touch switch. Proximity sensors can be used to recognise air gestures and hover-manipulations, an array of proximity sensing elements can replace vision-camera or depth camera based solutions for the hand gesture detection.

In particular, a car infotainment system in vehicle can employ the proximity sensors to cover the area over the screen. For example, LG Electronics has recently filed several patents addressing this advanced technology, sheet break sensing in paper machine.

Automatic faucets Motion detector Occupancy sensor. Camera phone — A camera phone is a mobile phone which is able to capture photographs. Most camera phones also record video, most camera phones are simpler than separate digital cameras.

Their usual fixed-focus lenses and smaller sensors limit their performance in poor lighting, lacking a physical shutter, some have a long shutter lag. Photoflash is typically provided by an LED source which illuminates less intensely over a longer exposure time than a bright.

Optical zoom and tripod screws are rare and none has a hot shoe for attaching an external flash, some also lack a USB connection or a removable memory card.

Most have Bluetooth and WiFi, and can make geotagged photographs, some of the more expensive camera phones have only a few of these technical disadvantages, but with bigger image sensors, their capabilities approach those of low-end point-and-shoot cameras.

In the smartphone era, the sales increase of camera phones caused point-and-shoot camera sales to peak about Most model lines improve their cameras every year or two, most smartphones only have a menu choice to start a camera application program and an on-screen button to activate the shutter.

Some also have a camera button, for quickness and convenience. The principal advantages of camera phones are cost and compactness, indeed for a user who carries a mobile phone anyway, smartphones that are camera phones may run mobile applications to add capabilities such as geotagging and image stitching.

However, the screen, being a general purpose control, lacks the agility of a separate cameras dedicated buttons. The latest generation of cameras also apply distortion, vignetting. Most camera phones have a digital zoom feature, an external camera can be added, coupled wirelessly to the phone by Wi-Fi.

They are compatible with most smartphones, images are usually saved in the JPEG file format, except for some high-end camera phones which have also RAW feature and the Android 5. Windows Phones can be configured to operate as a camera if the phone is asleep.

Pixel — The address of a pixel corresponds to its physical coordinates. LCD pixels are manufactured in a grid, and are often represented using dots or squares. Each pixel is a sample of an image, more samples typically provide more accurate representations of the original.

The intensity of each pixel is variable, in color imaging systems, a color is typically represented by three or four component intensities such as red, green, and blue, or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

The word pixel is based on a contraction of pix and el, the word pixel was first published in by Frederic C. Billingsley of JPL, to describe the elements of video images from space probes to the Moon.

Billingsley had learned the word from Keith E. The word is a combination of pix, for picture, the word pix appeared in Variety magazine headlines in, as an abbreviation for the word pictures, in reference to movies.

By, pix was being used in reference to pictures by photojournalists. The concept of a picture element dates to the earliest days of television, some authors explain pixel as picture cell, as early as In graphics and in image and video processing, pel is often used instead of pixel, for example, IBM used it in their Technical Reference for the original PC.

A pixel is generally thought of as the smallest single component of a digital image, however, the definition is highly context-sensitive. For example, there can be printed pixels in a page, or pixels carried by electronic signals, or represented by digital values, or pixels on a display device, or pixels in a digital camera.

This list is not exhaustive and, depending on context, synonyms include pel, sample, byte, bit, dot, Pixels can be used as a unit of measure such as, pixels per inch, pixels per line, or spaced 10 pixels apart.

For example, a high-quality photographic image may be printed with ppi on a dpi inkjet printer, even higher dpi numbers, such as the dpi quoted by printer manufacturers since, do not mean much in terms of achievable resolution.

The more pixels used to represent an image, the closer the result can resemble the original, the number of pixels in an image is sometimes called the resolution, though resolution has a more specific definition.

The pixels, or color samples, that form an image may or may not be in one-to-one correspondence with screen pixels. In computing, a composed of pixels is known as a bitmapped image or a raster image.

Today, the VGA analog interface is used for high definition video, including resolutions of p, while the transmission bandwidth of VGA is high enough to support even higher resolution playback, there can be picture quality degradation depending on cable quality and length.

How discernible this degradation is depends on the individuals eyesight and the display, though it is noticeable when switching to. Since the exactness of quartz oscillators is limited, real cards will have higher or lower frequency.

All derived VGA timings can be varied widely by software that bypasses the VGA firmware interface and communicates directly with the VGA hardware, the use of other timings may in fact damage such monitors and thus was usually avoided by software publishers.

For the most common VGA mode, the timings are. The figures shown in this image may be inaccurate and not match the above table exactly. The monitor is triggered into synchronising at the higher frame rate by use of a positive-polarity VSync pulse.

Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which restricts the use of the term Wi-Fi Certified to products that successfully complete interoperability certification testing.

Devices that can use Wi-Fi technology include personal computers, video-game consoles, smartphones, digital cameras, tablet computers, digital audio players, Wi-Fi compatible devices can connect to the Internet via a WLAN network and a wireless access point.

Such an access point has a range of about 20 meters indoors, hotspot coverage can be as small as a single room with walls that block radio waves, or as large as many square kilometres achieved by using multiple overlapping access points.

Wi-Fi most commonly uses the 2. A ruling by the U. Federal Communications Commission released the ISM band for unlicensed use and these frequency bands are the same ones used by equipment such as microwave ovens and are subject to interference.

They are the credited with inventing Wi-Fi. The first version of the In, the Wi-Fi Alliance formed as an association to hold the Wi-Fi trademark under which most products are sold.

Wi-Fi uses a number of patents held by many different organizations. Phil Belanger, a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance who presided over the selection of the name Wi-Fi, has stated that Interbrand invented Wi-Fi as a pun upon the word hi-fi.

Interbrand also created the Wi-Fi logo, the yin-yang Wi-Fi logo indicates the certification of a product for interoperability. Bluetooth — Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, and building personal area networks.

Invented by telecom vendor Ericsson in, it was conceived as a wireless alternative to RS data cables. It can connect up to seven devices, overcoming problems that older technologies had when attempting to connect to each other.

The Bluetooth SIG oversees development of the specification, manages the qualification program, a manufacturer must meet Bluetooth SIG standards to market it as a Bluetooth device.

A network of patents apply to the technology, which are licensed to individual qualifying devices, the development of the short-link radio technology, later named Bluetooth, was initiated in by Nils Rydbeck, CTO at Ericsson Mobile in Lund, Sweden, and by Johan Ullman.

The purpose was to develop wireless headsets, according to two inventions by Johan Ullman, SE, issued and SE, issued, Nils Rydbeck tasked Tord Wingren with specifying and Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson with developing.

Both were working for Ericsson in Lund, the specification is based on frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology. The idea of this name was proposed in by Jim Kardach who developed a system that would allow mobile phones to communicate with computers, at the time of this proposal he was reading Frans G.

The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, the Bluetooth logo is a bind rune merging the Younger Futhark runes and, Haralds initials. Bluetooth operates at frequencies between and MHz, or and This is in the globally unlicensed Industrial, Scientific and Medical 2.

Bluetooth divides transmitted data into packets, and transmits each packet on one of 79 designated Bluetooth channels, each channel has a bandwidth of 1 MHz. It usually performs hops per second, with Adaptive Frequency-Hopping enabled, Bluetooth low energy uses 2 MHz spacing, which accommodates 40 channels.

Originally, Gaussian frequency-shift keying modulation was the modulation scheme available. Since the introduction of Bluetooth 2. Bluetooth is a protocol with a master-slave structure.

USB was designed to standardize the connection of peripherals to personal computers. It has become commonplace on other devices, such as smartphones, PDAs, USB has effectively replaced a variety of earlier interfaces, such as serial ports and parallel ports, as well as separate power chargers for portable devices.

Modes are identified by their names and icons, and the specifications suggests that plugs, unlike other data buses, USB connections are directed, with both upstream and downstream ports emanating from a single host.

This applies to power, with only downstream facing ports providing power. Thus, USB cables have different ends, A and B, therefore, in general, each different format requires four different connectors, a plug and receptacle for each of the A and B ends.

USB cables have the plugs, and the corresponding receptacles are on the computers or electronic devices, in common practice, the A end is usually the standard format, and the B side varies over standard, mini, and micro.

The mini and micro formats also provide for USB On-The-Go with a hermaphroditic AB receptacle, the micro format is the most durable from the point of view of designed insertion lifetime.

The standard and mini connectors have a lifetime of 1, insertion-removal cycles. Likewise, the component of the retention mechanism, parts that provide required gripping force, were also moved into plugs on the cable side.

The first widely used version of USB was 1. Its main goals were to increase the transfer rate, decrease power consumption, increase power output. Digital Living Network Alliance — DLNA works with cable, satellite, and telecom service providers to provide link protection on each end of the data transfer.

The extra layer of digital rights management security allows broadcast operators to enable consumers to share their content on multimedia devices without the risk of piracy, as of June the organization claims membership of more than companies.

As of October, over 25, different device models have obtained DLNA Certified status and it was estimated that by over 6 billion DLNA-certified devices, from digital cameras to game consoles and TVs, would be installed in users homes.

On January 5,, DLNA announced on its web site that the organization has fulfilled its mission and its certification program will be conducted by SpireSpark International of Portland, Oregon.

Hotspot Wi-Fi — A hotspot is a physical location where people may obtain Internet access, typically using Wi-Fi technology, via a wireless local area network using a router connected to an internet service provider.

Public hotspots may be found in a number of businesses for use of customers in developed urban areas throughout the world. Many hotels offer wifi access to guests, either in guest rooms or in the lobby, Hotspots differ from wireless access points, which are the hardware devices used to provide a wireless network service.

Private hotspots allow Internet access to a device via another device which may have access via say a mobile device. The first commercial venture to attempt to create a local area access network was a firm founded in Richardson.

The founders of the venture, Mark Goode, Greg Jackson, the firm was one of the first to sign such public access locations as Starbucks, American Airlines, and Hilton Hotels.

The company was sold to Deutsche Telecom in, who converted the name of the firm into T-Mobile Hotspot. It was then that the term entered the popular vernacular as a reference to a location where a publicly accessible wireless LAN is available.

ABI Research reported there was a total of 4. Collectively, WBA operator members serve more than 1 billion subscribers, the public can use a laptop or other suitable portable device to access the wireless connection provided.

Of the estimated million laptops,14 million PDAs, and other emerging Wi-Fi devices sold per year for the last few years, most include the Wi-Fi feature. For venues that have broadband Internet access, offering wireless access is as simple as configuring one access point, in conjunction with a router, a single wireless router combining these functions may suffice.

More than 10, hotspots are on trains, planes and airports, the region with the largest number of public hotspots is Europe, followed by North America and Asia. Security is a concern in connection with Hotspots.

There are three possible attack vectors, first, there is the wireless connection between the client and the access point. This needs to be encrypted, so that the connection cannot be eavesdropped or attacked by a man-in-the-middle-attack, second, there is the Hotspot itself.

FM broadcasting — FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation technology. Invented in by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, it is used worldwide to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio, FM broadcasting is capable of better sound quality than AM broadcasting, the chief competing radio broadcasting technology, so it is used for most music broadcasts.

This band, sometimes referred to as the OIRT band, is slowly being phased out in many countries, in those countries the In Japan, the band 76—95 MHz is used, the frequency of an FM broadcast station is usually an exact multiple of kHz.

In the UK odd or even are used, in Italy, multiples of 50 kHz are used. There are other unusual and obsolete FM broadcasting standards in countries, including 1,10,30,74, Random noise has a triangular spectral distribution in an FM system and this can be offset, to a limited extent, by boosting the high frequencies before transmission and reducing them by a corresponding amount in the receiver.

Reducing the high frequencies in the receiver also reduces the high-frequency noise. These processes of boosting and then reducing certain frequencies are known as pre-emphasis and de-emphasis, the amount of pre-emphasis and de-emphasis used is defined by the time constant of a simple RC filter circuit.

This applies to both mono and stereo transmissions, for stereo, pre-emphasis is applied to the left and right channels before multiplexing. They cannot be pre-emphasized as much because it would cause excessive deviation of the FM carrier, systems more modern than FM broadcasting tend to use either programme-dependent variable pre-emphasis, e.

Long before FM stereo transmission was considered, FM multiplexing of other types of audio level information was experimented with. Edwin Armstrong who invented FM was the first to experiment with multiplexing and these original FM multiplex subcarriers were amplitude modulated.

Smartphone — A smartphone is a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operating system that combines features of a personal computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use.

In, the Japanese firm NTT DoCoMo released the first smartphones to achieve mass adoption within a country, smartphones became widespread in the late s. Most of those produced from onward have high-speed mobile broadband 4G LTE, motion sensors, in the third quarter of, one billion smartphones were in use worldwide.

Global smartphone sales surpassed the sales figures for regular cell phones in early, devices that combined telephony and computing were first conceptualized by Nikola Tesla in and Theodore Paraskevakos in and patented in, and were offered for sale beginning in Paraskevakos was the first to introduce the concepts of intelligence, data processing and they were installed at Peoples Telephone Company in Leesburg, Alabama and were demonstrated to several telephone companies.

The original and historic working models are still in the possession of Paraskevakos, the first mobile phone to incorporate PDA features was a prototype developed by Frank Canova in while at IBM and demonstrated that year at the COMDEX computer industry trade show.

It included PDA features and other mobile applications such as maps, stock reports. A refined version was marketed to consumers in by BellSouth under the name Simon Personal Communicator, the Simon was the first commercially available device that could be properly referred to as a smartphone, although it was not called that in The two components were attached by a hinge in what known as a clamshell design, with the display above.

The PDA provided e-mail, calendar, address book, calculator and notebook applications, text-based Web browsing, when closed, the device could be used as a digital cellular phone.

The first device marketed as a smartphone, it combined the functions of a phone and PDA. The location is the Fira Gran Via venue in Barcelona, Spain, annual attendance is generally more than, people.

Up until, the event took place in Cannes and was known as 3GSM World, attendees represent more than countries from across the globe. Vehicle frame — A vehicle frame is the main supporting structure of a motor vehicle to which all other components are attached, comparable to the skeleton of an organism.

Until the s, virtually every car had a structural frame and this construction design is known as body-on-frame. Over time, nearly all cars have migrated to unibody construction, meaning their chassis.

Nearly all trucks, buses, and most pickups continue to use a frame as their chassis. The main functions of a frame in motor vehicles are, To support the mechanical components and body To deal with static and dynamic loads.

These include, Weight of the body, passengers, and cargo loads, vertical and torsional twisting transmitted by going over uneven surfaces. Transverse lateral forces caused by conditions, side wind.

Torque from the engine and transmission, longitudinal tensile forces from starting and acceleration, as well as compression from braking. In the case of a chassis, the frame is made up of structural elements called the rails or beams.

These are ordinarily made of steel sections, made by folding, rolling or pressing steel plate. There are three designs for these. If the material is folded twice, an open-ended cross-section, either C-shaped or hat-shaped results and it is made by taking a flat piece of steel and rolling both sides over to form a c-shaped beam running the length of the vehicle.

Hat Hat frames resemble a U and may be either right-side-up or inverted with the area facing down. Not commonly used due to weakness and a propensity to rust, however they can be found on — Chevrolet cars, abandoned for a while, the hat frame gained popularity again when companies started welding it to the bottom of unibody cars, in effect creating a boxed frame.

Boxed Originally, boxed frames were made by welding two matching C-rails together to form a rectangular tube, modern techniques, however, use a process similar to making C-rails in that a piece of steel is bent into four sides and then welded where both ends meet.

While appearing at first glance as a form made of metal. The first issue addressed is beam height, or the height of the side of a frame. The taller the frame, the better it is able to resist vertical flex when force is applied to the top of the frame and this is the reason semi-trucks have taller frame rails than other vehicles instead of just being thicker.

Trackball — A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axis—like an upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball.

The user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of the hand and their nails to move a pointer. Compared with a mouse, a trackball has no limits on travel, at times. With a trackball, the operator just continues rolling, whereas a mouse would have to be lifted and re-positioned, some trackballs have notably low friction, as well as being made of dense material such as glass, so they can be spun to make them coast.

The trackballs buttons may be situated to that of a mouse or to a style that suits the user. Large trackballs are common on CAD workstations for easy precision, before the advent of the touchpad, small trackballs were common on portable computers, where there may be no desk space on which to run a mouse.

Some small thumbballs clip onto the side of the keyboard and have buttons with the same function as mouse buttons. Benjamins project used analog computers to calculate the position of target aircraft based on several initial input points provided by a user with a joystick.

Benjamin felt that a more elegant input device was needed and invented a ball tracker system called the ball for this purpose in The device was patented in, but only a prototype using a ball rolling on two rubber-coated wheels was ever built and the device was kept as a military secret.

This trackball used a Canadian five-pin bowling ball, dATARs trackball used four disks to pick up motion, two each for the X and Y directions. When the ball was rolled, the pickup discs spun and contacts on their outer rim made periodic contact with wires, by counting the pulses, the physical movement of the ball could be determined.

Since, the American company Orbit Instrument Corporation produced a device named X-Y Ball Tracker, a trackball, in later trackball models the electrical contacts were replaced by a chopper wheel which had small slots cut into it in the same locations as the contacts.

An LED shone light through the slots to a sensor, As the disk rotated the slots alternately lined up and then blocked the light from the LED. Mice used the basic system for determining motion, but had the problem that the ball was in contact with the desk or mousepad.

In order to provide smooth motion the balls were covered with an anti-slip surface treatment. Rolling the mouse tended to pick up any dirt and drag it into the system where it would clog the chopper wheels, in contrast the trackball is in contact only with the users hand, which tends to be cleaner.

Pixel density — Horizontal and vertical density are usually the same, as most devices have square pixels, but differ on devices that have non-square pixels. The lowest acceptable quality factor is considered 1.

An absorbent paper surface, uncoated recycled paper for instance, lets ink droplets spread —so requires a more open printing screen, input resolution can therefore be reduced to minimize file size without loss in quality, as long as the quality factor of 2 is maintained.

This is easily determined by doubling the line frequency, for example, printing on an uncoated paper stock often limits printing screen frequency to no more than lpi, therefore, a quality factor of 2 is achieved with images of ppi.

The PPI of a display is related to the size of the display in inches. This measurement is referred to as dots per inch, though that measurement more accurately refers to the resolution of a computer printer.

This figure is determined by dividing the width of the area in pixels by the width of the display area in inches. It is possible for a display to have different horizontal and vertical PPI measurements, the dot pitch of a computer display determines the absolute limit of possible pixel density.

In January, Kopin Corporation announced a 0. In they followed this up with a DPI0. Holography applications demand even greater density, as higher pixel density produces a larger image size.

Spatial light modulators can reduce pixel pitch to 2. However, this figure depends both on the distance between viewer and image, and the visual acuity. For perspective, such a device at 15 inch screen size would have to more than four Full HD screens.

Not so much in Europe. They take less time to look into the smallest detail and try to find the worst that is, just for the sake of it You're checking your watch.

I'm American, and I find both equally rude. If I had to pick which is more rude, I would say looking at your phone. Checking your watch is just a glance. A "glance" at the phone probably will entail looking at texts with other people, thus leading to maybe the person wants to talk to someone else more than they want to talk to you, or they person.

Will "glance" at their phone and proceed to text or FB or something. Even with a smart watch, it's more about just quick glance notifications, not picking up your phone and using it. Plus, someone is more likely to repeatedly glance at and use their phone than their smart watch.

I think that's more your personal feeling not societies. For me checking your phone is far more rude. It's just become accepted and that's a shame. If smart watches become a social norm here, that will change for sure.

If I knew someone had a smart watch and looked at it while talking to me, I wouldn't pay much attention to it because I know that the person can be checking notifications, etc.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I'm American and 35, so I don't know if it's maybe a generational thing or cultural thing or what. Looking at your watch implies your mind has moved beyond the conversation at hand, due to no fault of anyone but yourself - the only thing that has caused you to be distracted is your boredom or disinterest with our conversation.

Getting a text is at least a third party trying to grab your attention without your control. A text feels more like someone walking by and saying "hey! I don't know too many people who wear watches, but I agree.

Glancing at your phone is one thing, responding is another I personally don't get offended but yeah it looks really stupid and kinda rude and could mean exactly what you said: Which one do you consider more offensive?

I'd say boobs is the least offensive. I would just think they've got some personal issue going on if someone is checking out their own boobs: Not where I work, and not in my mind. If you have a cell phone out in our meetings at work, that is highly frowned upon, and heaven forbid you forget to go to vibrate.

A casual glance at a watch just says you wonder what time it is. Also, sitting at my desk, my first line supervisor can see me. For him, a quick glance or even interaction with my watch like answering a text is way better than picking up my phone I don't know why phones are perceived so badly.

Every single one of us has one. But the second you touch it you're "unproductive. I haven't worn a watch for 20 years and I still instinctively look at my wrist when someone is boring me.

Having also never worn a watch, I do it a lot as a joke. Like those awkward situations you see in the movies: You mean like this? Honestly, I feel it's the exact opposite.

If I were talking to someone and they proceeded to take out their phone and start playing with it, that's a pretty sure sign they're done with me. There's a difference between glancing at your phone and playing with your phone; He said nothing about playing with the phone.

As you stated, playing with your phone is a sure-fire way of saying "I'm done with this conversation" and is extremely rude. However, glancing at your phone sends a different message.

I've always found it strange when people say that. I've been using a watch on a daily basis since I was quite young. I know that it may sound lazy, but I find a phone to be a bit of an awkward way to check the time.

Especially a large smartphone, which you need to dig out of your pocket, find the button, turn on, turn off and put back afterwards. All of this to see 3 digits.

I'm not saying that an expensive smart-watch is an answer for everyone though. I have an older Sony smart watch 2, but I find my normal watch more comfortable and so don't use it that much.

I think it depends on your perspective, i see smartwatch as a gadget that can do more than a traditional watch, not as a gadget that can do less than your smartphone.

I want a smartwatch. But even with all the features of every smartwatch combined, it'd be useless for me. I'd just have it to dick around lol. Which, truth be told, is actually how I use my smartphone.

I'd have no issue switching to a featurephone, at least not as far as features and usability go. But the "dicking around" factor is much lower than that of a smartphone.

I don't think I could switch to a feature phone. I don't even know what I'd do with mobile data. Almost any plan you pick has a thousand or more SMS messages included, and the average for phone calls is minutes.

With that, I've never needed mobile data. Yes, it is all neat, but, like I said to the guy above you, for me, at best, it's a "sometimes-handy" gimmick. I love not taking out my phone to check when the next train will arrive.

If my phone was integrated tight into my life like, connected to my audio setup, TV, lighting, PC etc. I mean there's some things that make you say "Neat! Gimmicks that can prove useful from time to time, but that's it.

I think the amount of category errors that happen in these smartwatch reviews is pretty laughable. People are going to buy smartwatches for the same reason they buy normal watches: Any utility past that is completely incidental.

Complaining that your watch ONLY does voice commands, weather, health tracking, apps, and notifications is baffling. Much agreed, I dislike single purpose gadgets so I'd never buy a traditional watch.

However, I'd like to be able to check the time, see notifications, and look things up without taking my phone out. When the Pebble first came out I was intrigued, but I kept saying I was going to wait for Google's platform because I imagined it as Google Now on your wrist.

Sure enough they did just that and I couldn't be more pleased. I would have snagged a M by now if the next one hadn't leaked. Crossing my fingers they put a more efficient CPU in it.

I've always like watches, but usually never found them comfortable, especially when typing. Beyond that though, only telling time is kind of lame -- I've wanted a smart watch longer than they've even been around.

Being able to check weather and notifications without flopping my phone out is really convenient in some situations. I'll buy one once they're able to measure blood pressure. I have hypertension and that would be a great feature.

If I had a really good use for one I'd use it. Like I know for diabetics there is a blood glucose monitor that can somehow sync to some watches so you can see your blood sugar on the watch.

I'd use one in a case like that. But for me all a smart watch really did was let me see notifications. That got old quick and usually I needed to act on the notification so I was pulling my phone out anyway.

I still wear a watch every day due to the fact that taking a phone out of my pocket is not always an option, mainly when being caught with a cell phone at my job will get you fired. A smart watch is handy to some I that live on their phone I guess but for the average person it is not really something that is needed.

Let alone don't get caught talking to your watch where I live, you will either be laughed at or jumped lol. I still laugh at people walking around and using the speaker phone or will run up and start saying random shit just to confuse the people on the other end.

Well, I also think nobody "needs" one, but it's just cool to have one on your wrist, so it's more a stylegadgetsatisfyinggeekpleasures: I will buy one when they put holographic display in it.

Till then i have a classy old school watch to wear proudly. Ignoring price they're fun and look good. But for most people I tell them to wait for the tech to be cheap.

Most people aren't going to setup Tasker to make it a hands-free powerhouse like me. Not until they are actually beneficial besides notifications and such. For example, payments and as a replacement for hover plastic cards.

At some point, electronics power usage will drop to the point where using them is feasible. Of course, the other problem is that people are idiots and will find a way to dig the material out and swallow it, then file lawsuits.

What about if they added something like Wankband that charge your battery when you move your hand? But I hope they charge by normal hand movements, not the horny way that Wankbad is created.

I want one to skip ads in podcasts while running. Trying to do that on a phone in an armband is annoying. Also so I can send messages and save notes while driving. Most likely they do it's the "cool" thing to do now lol.

The native player may also do skipping, but I don't know if it works with podcasts I've never been a big podcast listener. I've switched to WP some time ago and I really want a smartwatch.

The problem is that we don't have any more or less decent options - Pebble support is half-assed there even was info that MS worked with them to provide native support but their CEO killed it off and MS Band is bulky and not an actual watch.

The use-cases I imagine for me are controlling music, checking notifications, knowing who's calling when using my BT-headset, looking at my shopping list in a store and checking with maps when in unfamiliar location.

I've had a Moto for several months now, and I find myself thinking of smartwatches as being not unlike a second monitor for your computer. They aren't, strictly speaking, a necessary addition to your system; it'll work fine with just the one monitor.

Plenty of people may not even have a use case for a second monitor. But there is no fucking way I'm going back to a single monitor setup, just like there's no way I'm going to give up having a smartwatch.

I don't like to wear anything on my hands. I would love to see vintage style pocket edition android watches. Nah, I'm talking a real gold watch with a lid and a chain. And on tech aspect it should work totally independently without the need for a smartphone.

I like that idea except potentially having two smart devices in my pockets at the same time seems like an overkill. You can make your smartphone like that. For me, wearing a smartwatch has become a need.

I have trained myself to leave my phone in my pocket or backpack. There are many times when I will have a drink in one hand and my vape in the other. Trying to juggle my phone on top of that is not the easiest thing to do especially on a crowded train.

Given that I can reply to most messages using templates from my watches, I don't have to pull out my phone unless it's some that absolutely cannot wait. I've noticed that no one has brought up the security aspect of smart wearables; As soon as my watch and phone gets separated, my phone locks.

Not that it is something that I ever do, it's still an added benefit. Smart watches have been around since the late 90s in some form or another. Maybe that was basically PalmOS on a watch.

That thing was HUGE. I think this is the first time that they have actually been popular[ish]. My watch recently got its screen broken and I've been missing it. Never thought that I would, but never hearing any notification sounds was really a blessing.

Its more of a convenience than anything. I never look at it during one on one convo, but the vibrate let's me know something is there, and I can glance at its importance during a lull.

It allows you to continue what you're doing without interruption. Continue what you're doing. No need to pull out your phone because someone posted in your Facebook group.

I've had a since October, and I definitely miss it if there is a reason I don't have it on. I bought myself a Sony SW3 as soon as it became available. Although I like the techie aspects I'm still heavily disappointed that Sony hasn't come up with a seperately sold metal-band or even the promised adapter.

My rubber band is ugly as hell and a sweaty PITA with temps starting to rise as summer approaches. Not willing to buy a full watch and certainly not buying a Sony P2 if Sony doesn't get into gear on this one.

I have been wearing a Moto for months, and had a Pebble before that. I use it for notifications, and most importantly, as a trusted device on my phone. The latter is the first reason I will miss not wearing it one day.

The notifications are nice because I can glance at it when it vibrates, as others have said. Useful in a crowded place or at work. I do wish it could do more. The voice actions can be hit or miss, but I use it often to start a timer.

I use the watch to launch Strava when I forget to do it on a long bike ride. It's easier to do from the phone than stopping and pulling my phone out. On the bike having a quick glance at notifications is also useful, especially for phone calls.

I hope the second gen of the Moto offers better battery life so I can have a low power mode screen on all the time. Other than that, I can't think of much more that I wish the watch did.

The Apple approach seems way too complicated for me, I don't want to have full use of all my apps on my watch. I don't get many notifications on my phone I am quite introverted, thus the notifications on your wrist part doesn't interest me, but being and avid gadget lover and techy I would love to have one if the price is right for the geekiness of the customizable watch faces alone.

All else functionality is a bonus imo. Nope, don't want one. Not until Android Wear devices can be completely standalone and won't require any sort of tethering to a phone, neither via WiFi nor Bluetooth.

What value proposition does a "dumb" watch present? Also why do smartwatches have to be powerful tools? The value proposition of a smartwatch is convenience. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.

Dumb watches also present no value proposition; they are only a fashion accessory. I stopped wearing a watch when I got my first phone that displayed the time. Dumb watches don't need charging every day or even every week or every month.

They don't need a network connection to work or easy access to mains power. They're not easy to drop, but, if you do, they won't likely die on you. They don't get left on desks to ring again and again how many offices have "don't check your watch here" signs?

Also, they're comfortable to wear and don't have to look stupidly huge yes, some people wear stupidly huge watches, but that people also have small penises. People find irrational excuses to spend thousands of dollars on dumb watches that only tell time.

Yet, despite the fact, that smartwatches have more practical utilities than dumb watches, people somehow are confused by its value. I see value in getting contextual information on my wrist.

I see value in triaging notifications from my wrist. I see value in remotely controlling media from my wrist. I see value in tracking my fitness on my wrist. I see value in monitoring my health on my wrist.

I see value in executing commands from my wrist. I see value in all these conveniences without having to fiddle with my smartphone. So convenience, and sometimes aesthetics, are the greatest value proposition of the smartwatch.

It's really not rocket science. A "dumb" Rolex is worth big money even 10 years from now. Even you wont care about the smart watch you bought, a year or two from now. Smartwatches are useful for those in the business world because of notification mirroring.

However, a quick glance at the smartwatch would be more socially acceptable. For that reason, smartwatches will get a following over time, but it will take more time than smartphones to become mainstream as the idea of a smartwatch is undeveloped.

However, it's still great for when you have both your hands full, such as when you're biking or driving. I see a smart watch as a remote for a device that's typically less than two feet away in my pocket.

As such, there is no value because I'm still physically capable of flapping my meat sticks to get the phone when I want it. Yes, but not the current generation ones. I'll get a smartwatch when they have at least a few days worth of battery life, and doesn't look like a hockey puck on people who have small wrists.

Yes, but what I want a smartwatch that lets me open browsers, play videos, music on the watch itself. I don't want any of the current watches. I do want other people to buy them, though, so that there is a market to encourage continued development.

Outside the obvious battery life improvements, I want a watch that can be useful on its own, but be better when paired with something else - be that a phone, a car, a TV, a PC, an entire house, etc.

I want to be able to control actual things more than control apps. Switch my heating and lights on, unlock doors, pay for shopping, set my PVR to record - that sort of thing. Until then, no really interested.

My normal watch is functionally better at being a watch. For me, I want to de-complicate my life, a watch will need to take over my phone functionality to do that. Yes, as soon as the price is cheap enough to justify it.

I've always worn a watch. Getting one for a similar price albeit shorter lasting but with more functionality? I hope to get myself a Moto soon, as the price is dropping.

The thing about smartwatches is that you shouldn't get it as an impulse purchase. You should get it if you want a watch that can do more than just telling time and date. Right now, I think smart watches are more of a fad but they do have the potential of being useful, and Google is, I think moving in the right direction.

I was excited to try out Wear when I got my Moto I wore it for a few hours until I was told I had to charge it before I could install the new update. While wearing it, it basically just served as another notification shade.

And yeah, maybe there are times when it's better to look at my wrist to see what the new Hangout or SMS message or email or whatever is about. I think, to make it really useful, the watch needs to be less companion and more stand-alone.

Adding WiFi support was a good first move on Google's part. Now I can leave my phone charging at home and still get alerts. I'd like to also see apps that are designed to be fully installed on the Watch rather than simply pushing alerts to it.

Something like just under half of all US mobile phones are not smartphones. Broadbanded non-smartphone users could pair their Watch to their desktop and get notifications forwarded from it. It could also, potentially serve as a fall back if the watch can't find the phone it's supposed to connect to.

Then I could still get alerts, even if I was playing Ingress too much and drained my phone's battery. Some hardware tweaks could be useful as well. Obviously increase the battery size.

Maybe set to stay dormant except for a quick burst once an hour to save battery life. And if the watch becomes more of a stand alone device, we might need more than a puny 4GBs That's half a terabyte of storage you'd be carrying on a daily basis, and 15 or so years ago 1.

I've read several reviews that say of smart watches in general that there is "no compelling use". I can understand that argument from someone that sits at a desk all day with their smartphone in front of them.

A smartwatch may not be for you. I play poker several nights a week with my phone right in front of me, and during those periods my Moto is entirely redundant. I could understand thinking that it was a pointless gadget if that was the entirety of my experience with it.

So let me give you some compelling use cases. I own a service business.
