The headphone jack isn't going to come back and that's sad. The battery is good enough and I gave it a half a checkmark, but really isn't as big as I'd like. I am willing to have a thicker phone if it means a much better battery.
Of the should haves, the phone only manages 4. Good, similar to other flagship phones, though not quite the specs of the phone of my dreams. But it's worth noting a couple of other unique features of this phone.
First off, it offers a unique modular system for adding modular functionality. These snap-on add-ons attach through magnets and a couple of small cutouts on the back of the phone. It's a pretty clever system.
That said, the only add on currently available is a degree camera attachment that holds absolutely no appeal to me. But one can imagine more interesting add-ons like a higher quality camera lens, a higher quality microphone, etc.

The update is a almost mb big, and takes about minutes to download and install. You'll want to be on good wireless and have some time before you start. On the whole, I find a lot to like about this phone, and some things--like the elegant high quality build and no bezel screen--to love.
The Android OS runs very smoothly, apps install and launch fast, and call quality is good. Have they built one phone to rule them all, turn over all the cards, just buy it? No, not in my opinion.
It's a good option at the flagship price point, but there are other good options at that price point, and construction and design aside, I am not sure this phone has sufficiently differentiated itself to say you shouldn't carefully consider your options.
If Essential ultimately provides timely updates for a longer horizon than their competitors that would be a HUGE incentive to buy into their ecosystem. Heck, if I knew that they'd support Android updates until the hardware simply can't handle them, I'd say that all other caveats aside, this IS the phone to get.
I've got a drawer full of hardware-willing Android phones that were abandoned way too soon by their manufacturers. But that remains to be seen, even if the company us being run by the father of Android itself.
I just received the third major firmware update, and these three updates have fixed some of the earlier bugaboos, particularly with respect to general functioning of apps. They have also improved the camera though it's still a work in progress, it's generally good enough.
The design choices that I hated up front I still find terribly annoying: No headphone jack; USB-C; no wireless charging built in. But even with a just-good-enough camera and with the design choice headaches, in the past month I've come to love certain things about this phone: The form factor; the feel in my hand; the glassy smooth performance; the super fast booting; the lovely edge-to-edge display; and the surprisingly consistently excellent battery life.
I WANT to love this phone, warts and all. And beyond the more modest annoyances noted above, the fundamental reason is this: Unreliable cellular data service. I'm on Verizon, and this phone was properly provisioned on Verizon shortly after it was released.
But the phone has a horrible tendency to lose its data connection. I'll have a four bar solid data connection. Then I'll enter a location with a recognized WiFi connection. The phone will switch to WiFi, but when I leave the WiFi area it doesn't properly return to cellular data.
Sometimes it will even show a good strength data connection, but won't be able to connect to it. The only way to fix this is to reboot the phone. Sometimes taking the phone into and out of airplane mode will also fix things, but sometimes it won't.
The phone also has a tendency to get stuck on dirt-slow 3G even when there's a LTE connection available, and again the only way to force it to properly connect is to reboot the phone.
I've tried to switch to this phone as my daily driver, but the issues with lost data connection when I'm moving around are so common and so aggravating that ultimately I find myself switching back to other phones whenever I will be in a situation where using my phone is mission critical.

Here are the highlights. For reference, my current phone is a Samsung S7 edge on Verizon. Popped the sim card out of the S7e, popped it into the Essential, when through some setup steps on the phone, connected my Google accounts, and it was operational.
It let me select which of my apps I wanted to re-download and installed them could take all with one click, but I de-selected some that I don't use first. I used the Content Transfer app from Verizon free in the Google Play store to transfer message history, photos, videos, etc.
I was up and running with everything I use without missing a beat. The only thing I didn't see an easy way to replicate was the icons and widgets I've selected for my desktop s, so that's a bit of work to reposition everything the way I like it.
It's one of their key selling points titanium case vs aluminum in other phones, and they have a section on drop tests and not needing a case on their website. While it's not my goal to test this point excessively, I already dropped it accidentally from about 4' onto a hard surface and it was unscratched.
Assuming this holds up, and that it in fact doesn't need a case, this is a big win. It's funny how we look at phones in the store naked, admiring their size and design and weight, but then have to protect them in a bulky case.
I'm looking forward to using this au naturel. That's a downside vs. I suppose the equalizer would be a waterproof case but that kills the prior point. If water resistance is a key issue for you then this would negate the benefits of robustness and size below Size: The Essential cleverly embeds the camera into the screen itself with no real downside since that's where the icon bar sits anyway, so the camera is basically taking up the space of one top icon.
That's about the difference for it to be comfortable vs. The screen quality and resolution are very good and seems equal to the S7. Benefit of Essential is that the edge isn't curved - it gets the same amount of screen in the same width and keeps it flat which I prefer.
At their respective brightest settings, the S7 is brighter though, which maybe helpful in daylight outdoor situations. GPS with Endomondo for running Accurate, with just a little wobble, same as S7 Headphones - no jack I'd prefer a regular headphone jack, but the supplied adapter worked fine and my regular headphones worked with it without issue.
Fingerprint sensor - well done for 1-handed operation The sensor is positioned on the back, which turns out to be a very comfortable spot for 1-handed operation.
I programmed it to read the index finger of either hand. This again speaks to it not needing a case - if a case were used you couldn't access the reader. The S7 is a little more awkward for 1-hand with the reader at the bottom of the front.
Camera The built-in camera is solid, quick, good quality. The coming camera promises to be a very cool addition. I'm looking forward to trying that out. Phone itself Sound quality is fine on par with S7 for both hearing and speaking Dock for charging - coming soon I hope!
The biggest missing item out of the gate for me, that I love with my S7, is the wireless charging dock. I have one at my desk and one by my bed for the S7, I use the Seneo which is great. I just drop the phone onto the dock and it sits at a perfect 60 degree angle as an alarm clock while charging.
It's a step back to go back to plugging this in. The Essential website indicates that this is coming, although from the photos the dock appears to be just lying flat. I assume a 3rd party will come out with something to address this.
This is a great option based on size, robustness, and lack of extra stuff. Downside for me is water resistance and lack of a wireless charging dock at least initially.
Otherwise it's as good or better than alternatives in other respects, and I'm very happy with it. Agent said that it typical of new devices so it shouldn't be a lasting issue.

No quick start guide, no warranty card. Right from the start the build quality is solid. But for a flagship class device it should be. But while as solid as it feels it doesn't seem like it would survive a drop with that edge to edge glass on the front and the ceramic back.
Expect it to crack as easily as an iPhone 4 or 8 should you drop it. And you should be expecting to drop it fairly often since it has no radius on the back to properly fit your hand, it's just flat.
Let's start with the screen. It's also 4K, while that may seem cool at first it's just the latest in smartphone marketing BS. It drains your battery MUCH faster than even p screens for almost no actual visual benefit aside from better camera previews.
Let's move on to audio. Bottom mounted speakers are ok, for bottom mounted speakers. The biggest thing is the lack of a proper headphone port. I'm already tired of manufactures trying to force me into devices that require tiny little dongles for everything!
As a man, the only little dongle I need in life is the one I was born with between my legs. Alright so audio was a dud so how about storage? Except it doesn't support NVME or UFS so it isn't nearly as responsive as Apple or Samsung's offerings and to add insult to injury, unfortunately that's all you get since there is no micro sd expansion.
Okay what about other flagship features? Meh, it's a phone camera it catches those life time moments you need it too. I didn't get the camera since I have no use for it. What about Battery life?
Decent, despite Android's abysmal resource management and considering the lack of bloat on the phone at stock. But remember that screen I was talking about? Still sucks that battery dry FAST.
If you're a power user like me who can suck even the biggest phone batteries dry in under 6 hours, you can expect about 4 hours between emergency charges. No SD card slot, no wireless charging, no water resistance, a 4K screen to drain the battery capacity even faster, and to top it all off not even a freaking headphone jack.

That being said - OH. Firstly, the box this comes in is gorgeous! Black, sleek with a slide-out drawer that contains all of your necessities, including the phone, the charging cable and plug adapter as well as a converter so that you can use headphones.
I turned it on and quickly discovered that it required an update like any phone in existence I'd imagine. It was nice that the phone was almost half charged so that I could use it right out of the box!
But let's talk about specifics. The sleek case and the huge screen on the front give it a very distinctive and sexy look. My 13 year old daughter was even impressed not something that's easily accomplished.
The only downfall is that the back is so sleek it's easy to see any fingerprints which, if you're obsessed with having a clean phone would likely drive you a bit nuts. It's solid but not overly heavy.

Not only is the rear camera fantastic, the front camera is as well, making it ideal for taking any kind of photos, from food photos to vacation photos to selfies. He achieved his goal.

I've seen the complaints about missed touches not for me or a bad camera a little slow in low light but the picture comes out great and over all software wise it just seemed like android to me.
It worked as good as on my Nexus 5x. The hardware though is where it's at. The first thing you'll notice is that, comparatively, it's heavy. Not so much that it's bothersome but really more of a confidence inspiring weight.
You feel that it is made out of that titanium and ceramic that everyone is talking about. Those materials are used in a way to make it stand up to it's essential name with a simple yet attractive style that had co-workers passing it around to check it out.
On the outside you get the basic volume and power controls that are still taking some getting used to for me with the power below the others. On the back are the expected cameras, flash, and the accessory dimples; all but useless at this time with noting to attach.
You also get a fingerprint reader that work fine and was responsive but in the effor to make a minimal design I think they kept it too close to the surface. It's never obvious enough to my finger where the inset portion is so I'm often hunting for it.
This is something that may be resolved with more use. Of course there's that screen. We're still not quite to full-bezel-less but when holding and using it you start to feel that the screen goes right over the edge.
Sometimes I see an app expanding to the top and my brain expects it to stop below the camera. As much as I know it can go further it still surprises me. The camera dropping down in the middle of it really doesn't bother me and it sort of reverses the paradigm.
The screen used to have to stop because the camera needed space while now the screen goes on forever and we just allow the camera to temporarily use some space. I think everyone should be doing this.
Do I have complaints? Sure, but nothing I would hold against it if someone asked if they should get the phone. The back is as glossy as things get and the ceramic after 4 days is showing the micro scratches the ones only seen in bright reflections on the mirror finish.
This smoothness combined with the weight means I'd found it sliding off of things I assumed were more or less flat. Then there are the available accessories. For right now that entire port is only for a camera that you need to spend extra on top of the premium for the phone.
As the fancy new port is such a big deal it seems like the camera should just be included. Again, at the end of the day it's just an android phone. The difference is that it really is the best design, both aesthetics and materials, that I've seen in a mobile device yet.

I got my s7 edge a week ago. It's the most elegant device I've ever owned. The battery life the edge has a larger battery is insane I've been going since 6: I might go looking for multiple days per charge in a phone I buy a couple of years from now, but an actual full day of juice is plenty for me.

The touch sensitivity drives me nuts too. It's particularly bad when I'm trying to type and the keyboard's like "I don't give a fuck". Saying touchwizz sucks and completely avoiding it without even trying the s7, is like saying you're not getting anything except an iphone because android lags.
You're stuck in the past and you need to wake up. This phone, you just take it out of the box and you use it, you don't need root or any kind of setting it up, it works great, it doesn't lag AT ALL, at least on my exynos version, battery life is phenomenal, probably the best out of any flagship on the market right now.

But with the offers and promo Samsung gave I decided I'd live with it. Bought 2 units got 2 extra, sold the other 2 to pay for the first 2. I used them to get a Samsung Level U Pros bluetooth headset and 2 fast wireless chargers.

I am happy with my 6P: Actually I prefer it that way. It's either that or plastic. Metal is not a big deal option for Samsung phones because of wireless charging. LG v10 is textured plastic, Samsung tried that before people didn't take to it very well S5 series.
Ballistic Nylon is an interesting idea but that seems to be more rugged than what Samsung is known for with their galaxy line. The active line could use that sure. The point I'm trying to make is that there is nothing wrong with plastic.

There are plastics that feel good. Ah, OK that's something I can get behind. Some people assume because it's plastic it sucks, but that's just not true. As you said there are tons of good usages for plastic PLUS it's light.
However I think Samsung went with glass because they didn't seem to be able to nail it with plastic. Personally I don't care about the back since I'm going to put a case on it anyway. Don't know if it's just mine but my home button is loose, the metal cover over the conversation speaker is loose so when the phone vibrates it also does which makes a really irritating noise and when I have the volume up on max during a conversation the speaker sounds really bad on the "ear speaker".
Guess I got a really bad one. Tempered glas does not fit the screens well due to the curve. The phone are slippery with the glass back. That's a problem with all these new 2.

I'd agree with that have both the note 5 and GS7. Touchwiz HAS gotten better. It's visually ok and i don't notice any touchwiz jank or lag just yet in my S But that's the thing, touchwiz ages like milk, you'll notice the jank later on and it'll be annoying, sure it's a great OS and its fine.
Hell my old Nexus 5 still is buttery smooth af and my S6 is getting very janky and slow. Touchwiz is good if you like it and it's features but don't think it'll surpass every OS and skin out there.
This is why i stick to my 6P, it's like using a cloud. It's why people love stock Android phones, but not gonna lie i love my S7 too. Just not as much as my Nexus ;. Everyone saying that Touchwiz gets slower with age are basing it on older devices running Lollipop.
Lollipop had loads of issues in the core OS that Samsung didn't bother to fix. Marshmallow is so much better that I'd be really surprised if S7s suffered slow downs over time. My S7 is two months old now and still performs as if I've just taken it out of the box.
My Note 5, 7 months in, runs as smoothly as day 1, from what I can tell. If it's not, it's a negligible difference that is undetectable. One bad thing for me would be the touch buttons and the keyboard location.
Whenever I type I would always hit the symbol key and this phone doesn't really give space to hold the phone when you are watching YouTube or something. Whenever i get a phone i wait til i qualify for something.
I use an otter carrying case though. Otherwise its too slippery. My gripe with the phone is that all the buttons and screen are too sensitive. Agree that the rear glass scratches way to easily.
Front seems to hold up well, I wonder if they cheaper out on the back glass to save a buck? The S5 has been my absolute favorite device. So much so that I chose to grab the S7 edge for my wife only and I am carrying on with this workhorse.

Now Costco is offering a free 32" TV after purchase. I noticed only a minor difference in speed and functionality in the S7. Not tempting enough I am still happy on the S5 and am sticking to it just because I can.
I'd add sound as a downside. The S7 edge speaker was never going to be in the same league as my previous HTC One M8, that was always understood, but the sound quality via headphone socket was vastly superior and the new HTC 10 will be even better still, the S7 edge is much quieter too, bordering on distinctly TOO quiet at times, with the graduations of the electronic volume control running to either too quiet or too loud - insufficient volume steps.
Whilst the rest of the phone is fine, I'm highly disappointed with the audio quality of an extremely expensive flagship device. There's a related app I came across whilst looking into this which doesn't fix the problem, but it's a handy app all the same My bumper case makes the side buttons very difficult to press, so this helps.
You can add up to me storage to an S7 through a micro SD card, while the Nexus is stuck with what has built in. That's still 32GB for system files and apps and up to GB for everything else and you can move some apps to the SD card as well vs a maximum of GB for everything combined.

It actually faired worse in speed tests against iPhone 6s than a note 5. No IR blaster, like on S5. Handy feature to change TV channel on communal TVs, like waiting room, or cafeteria.
Finger print reader is better, but not perfect. I end up having to reset my "finger prints" every week. I don't know if it's a Galaxy S7 Edge thing -- it's my first Galaxy since S3 -- but what I don't like is the touch screen sensitivity.
I don't want my phone to react to my grip; my thumb touching the right edge and my pointer the left edge to keep the phone steady My device or should I say my grip activates random buttons.

I hate the sides. I always touch them when using the phone and I will be getting rid of the edge and keeping the regular s7 which I like a lot more. The sides are the worst, threre is no excuse for them to be so thin to the point that you can't even hold the phone unless it's flat in in hand or flipped to portrait.

I'm a software developer and we recently got a bunch of new phones to test our apps with. The Galaxy S7, being a popular phone, is among them and I have to say the stock OS is one of the worst I've seen in a long time, so many bugs where the OS behaviour is just way out of spec.
The method apps use to start a BLE scan is supposed to return false upon failure - but in this case it doesn't - so the app just sits there unaware its scan callbacks will never be called.
You can probably imagine that this could be a problem for an app which uses BLE fobs to raise an alarm. If you stop or pause it and attempt to start it again your app will crash every time I don't have to resume the sound where I left off so I can work around this by just making a new MediaPlayer instance everytime, but I shouldn't have to.
It really sucks putting all manner of awful workarounds into code you are trying to keep to a high standard just because samsung doesn't seem to care about what they release. WTF with the whole flipfont's not working third party and forced to purchase through galaxy apps store?
Havent even had this damn s7 edge for more than 4 months. It cracked a week after i got it from knee hight and since then the problems just keep coming. Battery life is 10x worse than before, the screen suddenly turns pink on me, glitches in everything, huge lag in everything, shut down open windows randomly, and now the speaker isn't working.
As soon as i can im getting rid of it and never going back to samsung agai. I just upgraded to a Verizon S7 and I'm returning it after a week. There were no joke 5 system updates to install.
After that it was OK for a few days, then it unexpectedly rebooted, then always showed "system process isn't responding" error after boot, and would get laggy and hot. I tried clearing system cache, and safe mode, either way the error still happened.
Then I did a factory reset and the problem was gone until I had all my usual apps set up again whereupon it came back. I really wanted to like this phone, the size is just right and the features on paper were great.
Seems like beautiful hardware saddled with crummy software. I had a note 3 a long time and loved it. It began dropping calls. I purchased the s7 edge. The battery life is 8 hrs.

I OWN an unlocked version of the snapdragon s7. I have a bachelor of science in technology. This article states two falacies. One is the fact I own a snapdragon unlocked s7, and this article says they don't exist.
Secondly, every benchmark speed test as far as I have tested and compared to processor speed of the snapdragon cpu versus the 8 core piece of crap they are talking about and the snapdragon wins by a NOTICBLE margin.

Always put a case on them as I have dropped them many times. Dropped it from 1 foot off the ground and it exploded. Same thing happened again. S7 comes preloaded with 12Gb of crap.

When you are presented with ads trying to play music off your own SD card it's pretty annoying. Expect a long setup time. This phone is a freakin hobby not something you can expect to have working nice out of the box.
I was seeing ads on everything for the first week until I nuked and disabled most of the crap preinstalled on the phone. You'd think native manufacturer provided apps would not force feed you ads given that it's a thousand dollar phone.
Only problem is any major Google update of Android will put it all back on and you will have to do it all over again. I don't buy a thousand dollar phone to look at force fed advertisements when I do The screen touch is way too sensitive, I sometimes find the phone jumps forwards and backward within apps even when I don't even touch the screen, just come close to it.
I bet if I breathe on it wrong it will trigger presses. I am going to try to get a brutal tempered glass screen protector just to dumb down the sensitivity.
Honestly, the worst part is I was so frustrated and angered by this POS I wanted to to return it, but Samsung's return policy states that if you use the phone for 30 minutes of talk time you can no longer return it Come on you goofs, its a bloody phone so I am stuck with it.
They have some data requirement too but I didnt get past the 30 minute limit problem so I didn't care. I will give them credit that their support is very good, it was a refreshing change from BlackBerry.
They remote controlled my phone and did their best all over the phone. If you call them they will try to fix your problem. BB used to be good for support and they make wicked phones, but you end up in an endless loop of BS and nothing is supported.
Samsung does a great job on this part and they dont charge you by the second. Just sell it as a 20Gb phone if the only way I can nuke 12Gb of crap is to void my warranty.
Seriously, my Windows 7 PC system load with a full MS Office Pro installation and some games and other apps takes up less space on my hard drive than Android and their bloatware, and its just a bloody phone.
I shouldn't need 12Gb of crap as a foot in the door to boot this POS. I have an S7 and it's the worst peice of crap I've ever owned. With the nugat update, emojis don't work, I can't connect it to my laptop, and despite having a Samsung tech remote this POS nothing still works.
I've downloaded the original Samsung drivers, tried everything. This phone is a hobby, not a utility. All I want to do is smash it with a hammer every day. Do not buy this peice of shit phone.
It's an exercise in frustration. Yeah try 20gb because they load it up with three dvds worth of garbage you can't uninstall, and even Samsung didn't get the memo that they permanently disabled their own remote support app and they have no way to access the new one your forced to install with the new one.
This thing is garbage from day one. Oh and here's the best part: What a load of bullshit. Worst purchase I've ever made. Screen breaks with just looking at it never had any mobile phone going back to the 90s break and then the power button on the right side got damaged but a small bumb and now I cannot turn it off at all.
Horrible device that is not fit for purpose nor use. I would avoid like the plague. I have always owned Samsung Galaxy S phones and have loved their durability. These new ones, nooooo durability at all!
I get they changed some things to make them water resistant but does anyone feel as if the glass is not the same as the S5 and prior versions? My back broke within 2 weeks, the glass within 3 months.
I dropped my S4 and S1 so many times it's not even funny with no breakage. By the time it did break, years in to owing it that darn phone had seen it's fair share of drops and tumbles.
Still worked even when the phone screen finally had dropped enough enough times to break. It was the toilet it got dropped into and even that took almost a month to finally make my screen blink out.
So I rushed in, bought the S7 and was happy. Samsung was crappy to deal with. I asked about the quality change, mind you my 16 year old I also had bought an S5 for and again great phone, they informed me that they go through rigorous testing.
That negative reviews online mean nothing. So your customer base that's been buying from you since the S1 aren't valid, awesome! The phone as well constantly overheated and not only while charging.
I told them this. They said no that only happens when it's charging. Who wants to elect an android worth buying? Buying the S7 edge, is the worst purchase I've ever made, it's laggy, keeps crashing, BSoDs happening randomly, sometimes several times a day, and samsung service isn't better than there junk product they call it flagship smartphone, I took it to them 3 weeks after purchase first time, they refused to return or change, the device has went to maintenance 3 times now, within 3 months, and then I stopped taking it there, not because it's fixed, simply because it's hopeless.
I tried everything that doesn't affect the warranty, and still the same, I'm sure it's a problem with hardware junk they're using to make more profit, may be using several unreliable 3rd party distributors, lowest bidder gets the job, regardless of quality, I don't know exactly, but all I know is that they stole my money, by selling me this peace of junk, that's is not even close to being smart.
I just got the samsung s I used to have an Iphone This is very annoying. The s7 was great when I got it. The first update turned it into a paperweight. The absolute worst feature of this phone is its durability or complete lack thereof.
Mine, in a case slid off a napsack and got cracks all over both sides. I have had friends leave them on the charger overnight and wake up to cracks on the phone.
For durability, these phone are an epic fail. They are known to crack entirely on their own without being touched. Having the waterproof feature was nice, it was part of why I bought the S7 I killed my Z30 by spilling vodka and juice on it.
However now with a cracked screen and back, I can't trust this water resistant feature at all. So it was pointless. Secondary is the 12Gb of uninstallable junk on your 32Gb phone, rendering it a 20Gb phone.
Given the nature of Android, it is all wanting to run in the background, gobbling up precious battery time for apps that you may have even never used. Package disabler pro helps you force them to stop, but you still can't get rid of them and free up the memory.
In a peculiar oddity, Samsung updated it's remote help software, yet I can't get rid of the old software because it is locked in the phone - and the software was installed with the Nugat update, I didn't side load it.

It's an octa-core processor clocked at 2. It may not be the fastest next year and All these higher end processors are, at this point, sufficient to smoothly run anything the average user might do with their phone.

This phone has a 5. That's far more than sufficient for any discerning user. Some of the competition has somewhat higher density on their flagships. Beyond bragging rights, I don't consider those differences significant.
And it's on the back, which, once you get used to it, makes a lot more sense than on the front. And, honestly, I don't care. But as noted, there really isn't such a thing. The titanium and ceramic body is supposed to improve structural integrity and ability to withstand a fall.
I'm not going to test that intentionally. But the titanium body won't protect the Gorilla Glass screen any better than any other if your phone falls in such a way that the glass screen hits the floor first.
Yes, the Essential is a no discussion winner here, fabricated from titanium and ceramic, along with a beautiful edge-to-edge screen on the front. But given the improvements that have already been rolled out with software updates, one can hope fingers crossed that the camera with in short order get a lot better.
The headphone jack isn't going to come back and that's sad. The battery is good enough and I gave it a half a checkmark, but really isn't as big as I'd like. I am willing to have a thicker phone if it means a much better battery.
Of the should haves, the phone only manages 4. Good, similar to other flagship phones, though not quite the specs of the phone of my dreams. But it's worth noting a couple of other unique features of this phone.
First off, it offers a unique modular system for adding modular functionality. These snap-on add-ons attach through magnets and a couple of small cutouts on the back of the phone. It's a pretty clever system.
That said, the only add on currently available is a degree camera attachment that holds absolutely no appeal to me. But one can imagine more interesting add-ons like a higher quality camera lens, a higher quality microphone, etc.
Time will tell whether the potential of this ecosystem is realized, but the few attempts at modularity already attempted e. LG, Motorola haven't exactly set the world on fire. There are no hardware buttons.
There is no bezel on the top or bottom of the phone. The image even covers the area around the small cutout for the front-facing camera. It's a lovely, engaging, experience, although I found that many apps weren't yet programmed to properly use the entirety of the full screen leaving bands at the edges.
So if you haven't already moved to USB-C, this phone will force you to A couple of other nits I have to pick with this phone. First off, all you get in the package is the phone, a fast charger, a USB-C cable, a USB-C to headphone adapter, and a pin to access the sim card tray.
See the photo I've attached. Given the flagship high price of this kit, I would have liked to see a USB-C to micro-USB adapter which lets you use your old cables with the new phone.
Samsung includes a USB-C to micro-USB adapter in their Galaxy S8 package as well as wireless headphones, also not included with the Essential, and given that Essential is pushing us into a new standard, it seems the least they could have done.
Put it another way: Given how expensive this kit is and how few people have USB-C connectivity at the time of this phone's release, that's just ridiculous. The power button lies about half way down the right side.
Maybe it's just me, but I find this counter-intuitive, and find myself hitting the power volume button instead of the power button, or vice-versa. The update is a almost mb big, and takes about minutes to download and install.
You'll want to be on good wireless and have some time before you start. On the whole, I find a lot to like about this phone, and some things--like the elegant high quality build and no bezel screen--to love.
The Android OS runs very smoothly, apps install and launch fast, and call quality is good. Have they built one phone to rule them all, turn over all the cards, just buy it? No, not in my opinion.
It's a good option at the flagship price point, but there are other good options at that price point, and construction and design aside, I am not sure this phone has sufficiently differentiated itself to say you shouldn't carefully consider your options.
If Essential ultimately provides timely updates for a longer horizon than their competitors that would be a HUGE incentive to buy into their ecosystem.
Heck, if I knew that they'd support Android updates until the hardware simply can't handle them, I'd say that all other caveats aside, this IS the phone to get. I've got a drawer full of hardware-willing Android phones that were abandoned way too soon by their manufacturers.
But that remains to be seen, even if the company us being run by the father of Android itself. I just received the third major firmware update, and these three updates have fixed some of the earlier bugaboos, particularly with respect to general functioning of apps.
They have also improved the camera though it's still a work in progress, it's generally good enough. The design choices that I hated up front I still find terribly annoying: No headphone jack; USB-C; no wireless charging built in.
But even with a just-good-enough camera and with the design choice headaches, in the past month I've come to love certain things about this phone: The form factor; the feel in my hand; the glassy smooth performance; the super fast booting; the lovely edge-to-edge display; and the surprisingly consistently excellent battery life.
I WANT to love this phone, warts and all. And beyond the more modest annoyances noted above, the fundamental reason is this: Unreliable cellular data service.
I'm on Verizon, and this phone was properly provisioned on Verizon shortly after it was released. But the phone has a horrible tendency to lose its data connection. I'll have a four bar solid data connection.
Then I'll enter a location with a recognized WiFi connection. The phone will switch to WiFi, but when I leave the WiFi area it doesn't properly return to cellular data.
Sometimes it will even show a good strength data connection, but won't be able to connect to it. The only way to fix this is to reboot the phone. Sometimes taking the phone into and out of airplane mode will also fix things, but sometimes it won't.
The phone also has a tendency to get stuck on dirt-slow 3G even when there's a LTE connection available, and again the only way to force it to properly connect is to reboot the phone. I've tried to switch to this phone as my daily driver, but the issues with lost data connection when I'm moving around are so common and so aggravating that ultimately I find myself switching back to other phones whenever I will be in a situation where using my phone is mission critical.
I keep hoping a firmware update will fix things, and that's why I waited to write this update until the just released update of today, but it didn't fix anything in this regard and so But if the phone isn't going to love me back By dcnolimit on September 13, The phone still doesn't work on Verizon.
When I enter my IMEI on Verizon's website it still says the phone is not supported, and the Verizon tech in chat said it's not supported. Essential Support here says it's supported on Verizon, but Verizon disagrees.
Based on continued false information from Essential, the 1 star review stays. By JR on October 22, Dropped mine once and now this All this hype about the phone being nearly indestructible caused no one to offer a protective case before or at the time it became available.
Kudos to Google when they announced protective cases at the same time both Pixel 2s were released. Don't buy this phone, drop it once and it will become an expensive colorful paperweight.
By kc on September 6, I've used this for about 24 hours now and want to get a review up quickly prior to the release date for those who are considering this. Here are the highlights.
For reference, my current phone is a Samsung S7 edge on Verizon. Popped the sim card out of the S7e, popped it into the Essential, when through some setup steps on the phone, connected my Google accounts, and it was operational.
It let me select which of my apps I wanted to re-download and installed them could take all with one click, but I de-selected some that I don't use first. I used the Content Transfer app from Verizon free in the Google Play store to transfer message history, photos, videos, etc.
I was up and running with everything I use without missing a beat. The only thing I didn't see an easy way to replicate was the icons and widgets I've selected for my desktop s, so that's a bit of work to reposition everything the way I like it.
It's one of their key selling points titanium case vs aluminum in other phones, and they have a section on drop tests and not needing a case on their website. While it's not my goal to test this point excessively, I already dropped it accidentally from about 4' onto a hard surface and it was unscratched.
Assuming this holds up, and that it in fact doesn't need a case, this is a big win. It's funny how we look at phones in the store naked, admiring their size and design and weight, but then have to protect them in a bulky case.
I'm looking forward to using this au naturel. That's a downside vs. I suppose the equalizer would be a waterproof case but that kills the prior point. If water resistance is a key issue for you then this would negate the benefits of robustness and size below Size: The Essential cleverly embeds the camera into the screen itself with no real downside since that's where the icon bar sits anyway, so the camera is basically taking up the space of one top icon.
That's about the difference for it to be comfortable vs. The screen quality and resolution are very good and seems equal to the S7. Benefit of Essential is that the edge isn't curved - it gets the same amount of screen in the same width and keeps it flat which I prefer.
At their respective brightest settings, the S7 is brighter though, which maybe helpful in daylight outdoor situations. GPS with Endomondo for running Accurate, with just a little wobble, same as S7 Headphones - no jack I'd prefer a regular headphone jack, but the supplied adapter worked fine and my regular headphones worked with it without issue.
Fingerprint sensor - well done for 1-handed operation The sensor is positioned on the back, which turns out to be a very comfortable spot for 1-handed operation. I programmed it to read the index finger of either hand.
This again speaks to it not needing a case - if a case were used you couldn't access the reader. The S7 is a little more awkward for 1-hand with the reader at the bottom of the front.
Camera The built-in camera is solid, quick, good quality. The coming camera promises to be a very cool addition. I'm looking forward to trying that out. Phone itself Sound quality is fine on par with S7 for both hearing and speaking Dock for charging - coming soon I hope!
The biggest missing item out of the gate for me, that I love with my S7, is the wireless charging dock. I have one at my desk and one by my bed for the S7, I use the Seneo which is great. I just drop the phone onto the dock and it sits at a perfect 60 degree angle as an alarm clock while charging.
It's a step back to go back to plugging this in. The Essential website indicates that this is coming, although from the photos the dock appears to be just lying flat. I assume a 3rd party will come out with something to address this.
This is a great option based on size, robustness, and lack of extra stuff. Downside for me is water resistance and lack of a wireless charging dock at least initially.
Otherwise it's as good or better than alternatives in other respects, and I'm very happy with it. Agent said that it typical of new devices so it shouldn't be a lasting issue. Regular voicemail dial in works fine.

No quick start guide, no warranty card. Right from the start the build quality is solid. But for a flagship class device it should be. But while as solid as it feels it doesn't seem like it would survive a drop with that edge to edge glass on the front and the ceramic back.
Expect it to crack as easily as an iPhone 4 or 8 should you drop it. And you should be expecting to drop it fairly often since it has no radius on the back to properly fit your hand, it's just flat.
Let's start with the screen. It's also 4K, while that may seem cool at first it's just the latest in smartphone marketing BS. It drains your battery MUCH faster than even p screens for almost no actual visual benefit aside from better camera previews.
Let's move on to audio. Bottom mounted speakers are ok, for bottom mounted speakers. The biggest thing is the lack of a proper headphone port. I'm already tired of manufactures trying to force me into devices that require tiny little dongles for everything!
As a man, the only little dongle I need in life is the one I was born with between my legs. Alright so audio was a dud so how about storage? Except it doesn't support NVME or UFS so it isn't nearly as responsive as Apple or Samsung's offerings and to add insult to injury, unfortunately that's all you get since there is no micro sd expansion.
Okay what about other flagship features? Meh, it's a phone camera it catches those life time moments you need it too. I didn't get the camera since I have no use for it.
What about Battery life? Decent, despite Android's abysmal resource management and considering the lack of bloat on the phone at stock. But remember that screen I was talking about?
Still sucks that battery dry FAST. If you're a power user like me who can suck even the biggest phone batteries dry in under 6 hours, you can expect about 4 hours between emergency charges.
No SD card slot, no wireless charging, no water resistance, a 4K screen to drain the battery capacity even faster, and to top it all off not even a freaking headphone jack. Literally the only thing about this phone that might be innovative is the degree camera which seemed pointless to me personally.
Or an iPhone 6s if you don't like android. Let me preface this by saying I'm not a phone expert. That being said - OH. Firstly, the box this comes in is gorgeous!
Black, sleek with a slide-out drawer that contains all of your necessities, including the phone, the charging cable and plug adapter as well as a converter so that you can use headphones.
I turned it on and quickly discovered that it required an update like any phone in existence I'd imagine. It was nice that the phone was almost half charged so that I could use it right out of the box!
But let's talk about specifics. The sleek case and the huge screen on the front give it a very distinctive and sexy look. My 13 year old daughter was even impressed not something that's easily accomplished.
The only downfall is that the back is so sleek it's easy to see any fingerprints which, if you're obsessed with having a clean phone would likely drive you a bit nuts.
It's solid but not overly heavy. It feels like an expensive phone. Your fingers glide perfectly over the screen. I've dealt with sticky screens before the screen on our Xperia doesn't feel the nicest.
My fingers slid over it quickly and easily and made me regret having to go back to the Xperia screen. It's the fastest phone I've ever had the privilege to play with. My teenage neighbor has an iPhone 7 and I've played with her call a bit and while I thought that was fast, this one is so much faster.
Every app opens almost the instant I tap it and runs beautifully. I may not know a great deal about phones, but I'm actually a professional photographer so photos I do know.
This phone takes pictures in the blink of an eye, so quickly no matter whether you're using flash or not flash. Not only is the rear camera fantastic, the front camera is as well, making it ideal for taking any kind of photos, from food photos to vacation photos to selfies.
He achieved his goal. It's clean and sleek which may be one reason why it runs so fast. It doesn't heat up the way the Xperia does when running a program for awhile. I can't wait to see how this phone changes with time and if it evolves the way it says it will.
Overall, I am extremely impressed by everything about this phone. From the look to the feel to the way it works - this phone reaches as close to perfection as I think it's possible for a phone to achieve.

Repairs are very difficult, this phone has a super low repair-ability score. No company I can find offers repairs. In short, how can I support a company who can't support me?
I can't believe I bought 2 of these. I found the idea of someone "new" creating a phone to be an intriguing idea so much so that I'd been following all the pre-release info from all the tech blogs to see what we could expect.
To finally have it in my hand though and see that big beautiful screen come on Unlike a lot of phones, due to the completely stock Android, it really is all about the hardware. I've seen the complaints about missed touches not for me or a bad camera a little slow in low light but the picture comes out great and over all software wise it just seemed like android to me.
It worked as good as on my Nexus 5x. The hardware though is where it's at. The first thing you'll notice is that, comparatively, it's heavy. Not so much that it's bothersome but really more of a confidence inspiring weight.
You feel that it is made out of that titanium and ceramic that everyone is talking about. Those materials are used in a way to make it stand up to it's essential name with a simple yet attractive style that had co-workers passing it around to check it out.
On the outside you get the basic volume and power controls that are still taking some getting used to for me with the power below the others. On the back are the expected cameras, flash, and the accessory dimples; all but useless at this time with noting to attach.
You also get a fingerprint reader that work fine and was responsive but in the effor to make a minimal design I think they kept it too close to the surface. It's never obvious enough to my finger where the inset portion is so I'm often hunting for it.
This is something that may be resolved with more use. Of course there's that screen. We're still not quite to full-bezel-less but when holding and using it you start to feel that the screen goes right over the edge.
Sometimes I see an app expanding to the top and my brain expects it to stop below the camera. As much as I know it can go further it still surprises me. The camera dropping down in the middle of it really doesn't bother me and it sort of reverses the paradigm.
The screen used to have to stop because the camera needed space while now the screen goes on forever and we just allow the camera to temporarily use some space. I think everyone should be doing this.
Do I have complaints? Sure, but nothing I would hold against it if someone asked if they should get the phone. The back is as glossy as things get and the ceramic after 4 days is showing the micro scratches the ones only seen in bright reflections on the mirror finish.
This smoothness combined with the weight means I'd found it sliding off of things I assumed were more or less flat.
