These filters work by reducing the minimum focusing distance of your telephoto lens, and therefore improve magnification of the image. Of course, there can be a significant degradation of image quality depending upon the quality of the filters and the stacked magnification.
The results I got were interesting — very shallow DOF bringing only part of an insect in focus, and significant chromatic aberration in the out-of-focus areas. Still, as a beginning, not bad, and really fun!

Pretty much what dorkopter said—the mm and 90mm lenses will work with an A-to-E converter, the 35mm will work on its own. They suggest a macro tube, which is a cheap way of getting a similar macro effect, but you generally lose most of the automatic controls of the lenses, so will need to set up everything manually.

These are all full frame lenses and the pros who have used them are virtually unanimous on their virtues. But you certainly have no shortage of lenses to look into with that adapter!

Definitely Zeiss, as a walking-around-lens. Combine this lens with some of Zeiss fixed focal lenses like 12mm and Expensive, but build your system slowly, year by year, and you will have a proffessional kit you dont want to change with anyone.
Owner of a system like this you can put a Sony A7R on top which fits all your lenses in your kit. If you will update this system to next level you need to by two pair of eagle eyes for transplantation to be able to see the difference.
I am a fan of portrait, kids running around, food, inside church, street gravity and landscape. You should check first if all functions are comming along with the adapter. If not you have to do it by hand.
But no antishaking and rather heavy to carry along. Search your answers at flickr. But everything depends on your point of view. Price, functionality, image etc. Trust your gut feelings…..

Unfortunately, nothing really springs to mind. Combining small size, high optical quality, and flexibility is a balancing act. If you want to go old school, you could just use a prime lens which is what I do a lot, and learn to zoom with your feet.

I bought it for portability after getting tired of lugging my Canon Rebel XTi with Sigma zoom mm 1: I use it almost exclusively on auto, and was assisted in the purchase by a relatively knowledgeable brother so really did very little research.
Thinking a new lens might help, but not sure if zoom or prime is better. I primarily use the camera to take outdoor shots of kids playing sports or running around. Typically good light, but certainly the occasional cloudy day.
Also some indoor basketball court or birthday party shots as well. Does it make more sense to go for the prime or the zoom? Do I just give up and stick with the old Rebel?
As for the lenses, there I can be a bit more concrete! First up, a prime lens cannot zoom at all. Which is why a prime lens will usually take sharper and better looking photos than a zoom.
Roughly speaking, a prime will take better photos than a zoom, so you might prefer the way they look. One option might be to go the rental route. Pick up both lenses from LensRentals or similar, play with them for a week, and figure out which one you like more!
If push came to shove, my breakdown of which to get for you would go a bit like this. One way to split the difference would be to get a prime with a longer focal length. Thank you for this! The pictures are just not as clear, particularly those taken from far away.

Excellent discussion…something to think about. I have a Nex7 upgraded from a Nex 5 …I find the kit lens quite good…but If I need flexibility I take the Tamron… for more critical work I use my old Minolta lenses the 50 1.
I was considering the pancake…but it appears not to be an improvement over what I am using. You might want to mention that the Touit 32mm is really noisy when focusing during a video.

Recommending a Smaller Aperture could be because lenses rarely perform Best at max aperture, as you often loose some sharpness. It could also be to extend the exposure for the light painting, to give you time to paint, and i definately would recommend bringing a small tripod for the trip.
A final thing which is also important is that a shallow depth of field is often not desired i. The lack of a mm stabilised and affordable lens is a big hole. I picked those over the Sony e-mount purely due to the low aperture lenses at wide angles.
In your case Fuji makes a 14mm 2. They also have a 16mm 1. Will the Nikon lens not be able to autofocus? Is there a point in buying the Sigma 19mm if one already has the kit zoom mm?
Check out the tests run by SLRGear. But, looking at their data, the Sigma is slightly sharper and shows a more uniform and pleasing blur pattern, and does way better in terms of distortion and vignetting.
I wish SLRGear had tested the at an fl of between mm instead of jumping straight to 35mm. It would have been better in terms of comparison. I have found myself using the zoom at between mm most of the time, and I only use 16mm if I need the widest angle.

But the kit lens, mm is also a perfect range for street but with a much less quality. Stabilization is definitely a great feature to have, and like you mention, doubly so for video!

If you want low light shooting capability without a tripod, get the Sony. If you want excellent sharpness for very little money, go for the Sigma. Hello, this post and the one about the best beginner mirrorless camera have been instrumental in my choosing my first system camera NEX-6 and lens selection later collection.
Those seem like a really solid alternative, especially at that price! Now the zeiss 32mm f1. And totally the better of the two! But looking at the Amazon listing at that price, it only seems that Focus Camera has it at that price, and they might be a liiiiitle sketchy.
There are reports of them selling grey market gear, and being hard to deal with http: On the wide angle side, why no mention of the Sony SEL? I lean towards that being a more experienced than beginner lens.
That said, Sony users are in a slightly tricky spot here. Essentially, this is the lot http: Of the two, the Metz is more powerful, with better coverage, and can tilt further—but is slightly slower to recharge.

Yeah, go for the Zeiss. Hi, thanks for the useful post. Firstly I was going for the Sigma 19mm but I would like something wider. My only concerns are about the lack of stabilization and the autofocus considering that I am not an expert, but I would like to learn.
What I really want are wide angles and sharp images. I own a Sony a Hmmm…I think the 8mm might be a bit wide, especially for a new user. The Rokinon 12mm if a much more traditional wide-angle size, and notably easier to use because of it.
I can understand your trepidation about lack of AF and stabilization. Both are definitely something you can work around, especially with the wide maximum aperture on the Rokinons to counteract shake, and the fact that wide-angle lenses tend to be easier to manually focus.
What are the disadvantages, other than I have to stand further to shoot? Big difference on price!! Sorry for noob question. The big one is the how zoomed it is. I was new to photography 4 months ago.
Of course, we all have different needs. I chose the A over the currently top recommendation Olympus because of the fast continuous Autofocus for sports — particularly photographing my children.
Those of you who are busy with younger families will also love the flexibility of zoom lenses. The mm Zeiss is fantastic if you get a good copy. The wide-aperture primes are much better for shooting in low light but day-to-day walk-around this is an excellent and portable lens with not lens changing hassle.
Again, quite expensive, so not mentioned here. On the A crop sensor this is a mm lens. Quite large, compared to the others described here…. The biggest issue with my kit is the photographer! Just sharing my real-world experience.
Since the a does not have image stabilization built in, why do you prefer the Zeiss without stabilization to the Sony 35 with stabilization. How important is image stabilization? I also have the 35mm, but I would use them for different things.
Most days outside with the family, the Zeiss is an excellent option for everyday photography. However, indoors at night there is very little light so you need to get more light to the sensor — so the wider f1.
It also makes it excellent for low-light video. Last night I was shooting a school concert in low light so the 35mm and 50mm f1. Again, in low light conditions image stabilisation allows you to get better quality images without the use of a tripod — hand held in other words.
Better camera holding and breathing technique is also important. With super fast prime lenses, stabilization is less important but not unimportant, as you can open up the aperture wide enough to let in quite a lot of light and shoot unstabilized.
The Zeiss is, overall, a lens with superior optics. I should have been clearer. I was talking about the Zeiss touit 32 f1. I know the Sony 35mm f1. Any recommendation what the best choice is?
Bokeh depends on 3 things — the size of the aperture, the distance to your subject and the distance behind the subject to background. So, to address your question — where will you use the lens the most?
In large or small rooms? Face shot portraits or full body shot portraits? Will you shoot any video? Clearly the 50mm gets you closer and it has the nicest bokeh.
But you choose your tool to fit the shot. For portraits, the 50mm is better — you will be further from your subject and there will be less distortion, slightly better bokeh and better background compression — all leading to better portraits.
Alternatively get them all second hand on eBay! The third option is to get the 50mm and 30mm — see which features of the two lenses you really use the most through experience and then look for a second hand copy of the 35mm at a later date if you really need the OSS and wider aperture selling the Sigma at the same time.
Hi Gareth, Thanks for the extensive feedback. But I like to play around and experiment with it too. Low light is important to me, video is less. Two primes would definitely be nice, but I do think that having just the one that can be used in more situations is more useful.
Should I go for it? I just got my a which did not come with a kit len. I got a Sony mm f4. Which of Sony 35mm f1. I intend to use the camera both indoor and outdoor.
Other recommendations outside those I mentioned would be appreciated. For me the Sony 35mm f1. I would get used to using those two lenses. See what kind of pictures you take and take your time.
If you find yourself walking backwards to take wider shots a lot, consider the Sigma 19mm or Sony 20mm pancake recommended here. Cost vs size on this one, image quality is very similar in the real world.
If you find yourself frustrated with all these lens changes, the Sony mm Zeiss is great and a perfect compliment to a small camera like the A So definitely the 35mm, which is a pretty great all around lens for both indoors and outdoors.

What are the advantages the f1. How noticeable are the differences in real life? Which might be the difference between capturing a sharp image and a blurry one, especially when shooting hand-held.
Does it ever get much lower than that? The Fitbit is a twobit product. If you use it normally, i. Not a big deal, but a bit annoying. But my biggest issue is that syncing is a nightmare. It has failed so many times before that I just gave up and waited a few hours.
It has failed both with the usb dongle on my computer and repeatedly with my phone. I will literally take the tracker off and place it right next to my phone and the tracker will fail to sync over and over and over.
You have to constantly restart it. I have an update for the tracker that I have tried to update beyond 10x, it has failed in every instance for no apparent reason.
This is all things you can do fairly accurately on your own. If not, what else should I get that is a low budget option but decent? The kit lens is a pretty solid starter lens, and the 35mm is a great option for travel and food thanks to its great low light capabilities.

If yes, which one do you recommend? So I have to choose. Okay, first up—adapter vs fisheye lens. For most beginners, I recommend the the mm and the 35mm. The mm goes pretty wide when totally zoomed out not fisheye, but pretty wide, and is pretty good for learning the ropes.
The 35mm is great image quality and excellent for low light. But, that said, if you want to go super-wide? It seems that the 35mm is really worth it even though some people say that the mm set at 35mm is good enough.
To save on price, one option is to go with a reputable second hand dealer, like KEH. Could save a couple of bucks that way. Has anyone done filters for these yet? This is a great comparative piece, though, for UV lenses, and if nothing else gives you a feel of brands to trust.
Before buying any non-kit lens for A, I think it should be a good idea to check, if you have Lightroom, with the pictures took with the kit lens mm to see what is the focal you use the most. You would be surprised with the result!
Take a big bunch of photo in your LR Library, see all the metadata of the complete bunch, the you see all the focal you used. Also if possible maybe a new feature would be to compare flashes?
Pretty much the only way that springs to mind to get a bit more light in is to adapt a lens from another system, either one with an already faster aperture, or using a Speed Booster adapter, which lets a camera capture more light.
Autofocus in low light is always a hard thing. Mirrorless cameras are getting better at this slowly and the newer crop of cameras claim to be able to catch focus in some pretty low light conditions.
But until then, yeah, getting better with MF will serve you pretty well. Body upgrading would also be tricky. Pretty much the only slightly better option out there for you right now is the Sony a though it does have a greatly improved AF system.
If you want anything more substantial, you have to push into the A7 territory, which is full frame, and a whole different ballgame. I wanted a mirrorless camera for the portability.

All of which would benefit from having a long zoom around. Some are better quality than others, some might lose some optical quality, or drop AF speed. I would never go on a trip with just a prime.
You would have such limited options with framing and composing. I just got the a with the Does not seem bad but it distorts so much at 16 you can correct in post.
The convenience of not switching lenses is priceless. Why most photographers use those expensive f: Get a, maybe a grey market model, it will cost you less than 2 primes and be more flexible.
Get an adapter for you Canon primes and use manual focus the Sony viewfinder highlights what area is in focus. You could buy some used fast prime, After all primes are usually used in less hectic situations.

Olympus and Panasonic use Micro Four Thirds, which is smaller still, and uses a 2x crop factor, so would need a 25mm lens to reach 50mm equivalence. You conclude for that category of lenses that the Sony is the most balanced.
Was this taking the price into consideration? With the price being almost equal should I definitely take the Zeiss over the Sony? I tried it for a week compared to kit lens and Sony native primes.
Just disappointed because its quality is similar to the kit lens while at 2. Perhaps the m silver or the G? The Sony E mm is also noticeably softer and displays significantly more vignetting and distortion.
CA control is quite good, however. Most of the time, primes are going to give you a better result, due to only having to be good at one focal length rather than a bunch.

Perhaps I am being too harsh on the Z from my non-professional testing. I will do some more digging before sending it back. Though i ordered the 32mm Touit just now in replacement before the promotion runs out of time.
So how do u like the Z since u had it awhile? The color renderings are superb. However, it was the sharpness - i was being overly critical on this small sized zoom lens. I think that i will have this lens on for most of time out as my walk around - Zeiss and F1.
Now since I know both of those lenses are really top notch I have a hard decision to make. I would for sure rather get the Flexibility matter way more than absolute lens quality for taking photos.
You are out and about. You want to take photos of something or someone you encounter. You may want to get some wide shots to give context. You may want to get some detail shots.
You may want to take a good portrait as well. A prime like the 32mm will not be wide enough for establishing wide shots. Otherwise too much fiddling switching lenses, that also increases the risk of dust on the sensor and dropping something.
I am considering the Zeiss for my alpha a The kit does not seem bad, but the distortion at 16mm is a joke lightroom corrects it but it crops the edges. Zooms allow taking of better photos, better composition, better interaction with random subjects.
But sometimes I like carrying a 20mm or a fast 35mm with my nikon. Absolutely the is the perfect range for out and about. Perhaps one day i will give it another try. My ideal would be the mm plus a 60mm or 70mm fast prime.

You can probably get away without the IS by instead using the fast aperture and cranking the ISO a bit. For the video stuff, I think it depends a lot on how you shoot. Thanks so much for the input, it really is appreciated!

Was maybe going to get some sort of steady thing for it too. I just got the A Planning to get Zeiss. But lenses are a lot more expensive than Nikons but will get an adapter ring to mount some old Nikons like a fast 35mm prime.
If you shoot events and conventions you need a lens like the Fiddling with primes under pressure is a pain. If you shoot portrait work in the studio primes are great.

I have recently been using a Sony QX30 for work and love the ability to pair with my iPhone. And if so, might as well get the one with the kit lens included, so you have something to shoot with.
Thanks for the super prompt reply. Yes, there is definitely a lag with the QX30, which is mainly due to the way it transfers via wifi from camera to phone for preview.
For work, I mainly use the QX30 to take photos with 30x optical zoom photos from an extension pole mount remote shooting. Personal use of the QX1 would be totally different, rapid shot portraits of my kids, mainly.
I need to see how the lag is affected if I turn off the 2 second preview. My main concern was whether there was any reason to think the e-mount on the QX1 was in any way limited?
Lag aside, should I expect the same performance and image quality and lens compatibility? Hmmm…the rapid shot portraits might be tricky to pull off due to the delay.

Can I say 32mm on a mirorless crop sensor is equalvalent to 57mm? The crop factor on an APS-C camera is around 1. So a 32mm lens gives you an equivalent focal length of 48mm.
Only way I would shoot with primes is if I would carry 2 cameras. I bought the Zeiss grey market for Anyway I am spoiled by old Nikon glass. If you have a A, it is cheaper to buy the Sigma 19mm and the Sony 50mm 1.

Kit lenses tend to be a little lower quality than primes, but are totally functional. You can definitely learn on either, the kit lens will be a bit more flexible for having some zoom range; a prime will be a bit sharper and better in low light, but will require you to be more creative in your positioning.
Neither is right nor wrong! I also purchased the Sony wide angle lense. Either of the zoom lenses we list here would work, with a bit of fiddling. The mm is good if you only want to carry a single lens with you everywhere, though is pretty big.

Hi, thanks for the useful post. Firstly I was going for the Sigma 19mm but I would like something wider. My only concerns are about the lack of stabilization and the autofocus considering that I am not an expert, but I would like to learn.
What I really want are wide angles and sharp images. I own a Sony a Hmmm…I think the 8mm might be a bit wide, especially for a new user. The Rokinon 12mm if a much more traditional wide-angle size, and notably easier to use because of it.
I can understand your trepidation about lack of AF and stabilization. Both are definitely something you can work around, especially with the wide maximum aperture on the Rokinons to counteract shake, and the fact that wide-angle lenses tend to be easier to manually focus.

Those of you who are busy with younger families will also love the flexibility of zoom lenses. The mm Zeiss is fantastic if you get a good copy. The wide-aperture primes are much better for shooting in low light but day-to-day walk-around this is an excellent and portable lens with not lens changing hassle.

Since the a does not have image stabilization built in, why do you prefer the Zeiss without stabilization to the Sony 35 with stabilization. How important is image stabilization?
I also have the 35mm, but I would use them for different things. Most days outside with the family, the Zeiss is an excellent option for everyday photography. However, indoors at night there is very little light so you need to get more light to the sensor — so the wider f1.
It also makes it excellent for low-light video. Last night I was shooting a school concert in low light so the 35mm and 50mm f1. Again, in low light conditions image stabilisation allows you to get better quality images without the use of a tripod — hand held in other words.
Better camera holding and breathing technique is also important. With super fast prime lenses, stabilization is less important but not unimportant, as you can open up the aperture wide enough to let in quite a lot of light and shoot unstabilized.
The Zeiss is, overall, a lens with superior optics. I should have been clearer. I was talking about the Zeiss touit 32 f1. I know the Sony 35mm f1. Any recommendation what the best choice is?
Bokeh depends on 3 things — the size of the aperture, the distance to your subject and the distance behind the subject to background. So, to address your question — where will you use the lens the most?
In large or small rooms? Face shot portraits or full body shot portraits? Will you shoot any video? Clearly the 50mm gets you closer and it has the nicest bokeh. But you choose your tool to fit the shot.
For portraits, the 50mm is better — you will be further from your subject and there will be less distortion, slightly better bokeh and better background compression — all leading to better portraits.
Alternatively get them all second hand on eBay! The third option is to get the 50mm and 30mm — see which features of the two lenses you really use the most through experience and then look for a second hand copy of the 35mm at a later date if you really need the OSS and wider aperture selling the Sigma at the same time.
Hi Gareth, Thanks for the extensive feedback. But I like to play around and experiment with it too. Low light is important to me, video is less. Two primes would definitely be nice, but I do think that having just the one that can be used in more situations is more useful.
Should I go for it? I just got my a which did not come with a kit len. I got a Sony mm f4. Which of Sony 35mm f1. I intend to use the camera both indoor and outdoor. Other recommendations outside those I mentioned would be appreciated.
For me the Sony 35mm f1. I would get used to using those two lenses. See what kind of pictures you take and take your time. If you find yourself walking backwards to take wider shots a lot, consider the Sigma 19mm or Sony 20mm pancake recommended here.
Cost vs size on this one, image quality is very similar in the real world. If you find yourself frustrated with all these lens changes, the Sony mm Zeiss is great and a perfect compliment to a small camera like the A So definitely the 35mm, which is a pretty great all around lens for both indoors and outdoors.

You have to constantly restart it. I have an update for the tracker that I have tried to update beyond 10x, it has failed in every instance for no apparent reason.
This is all things you can do fairly accurately on your own. If not, what else should I get that is a low budget option but decent? The kit lens is a pretty solid starter lens, and the 35mm is a great option for travel and food thanks to its great low light capabilities.

So I have to choose. Okay, first up—adapter vs fisheye lens. For most beginners, I recommend the the mm and the 35mm. The mm goes pretty wide when totally zoomed out not fisheye, but pretty wide, and is pretty good for learning the ropes.
The 35mm is great image quality and excellent for low light. But, that said, if you want to go super-wide? It seems that the 35mm is really worth it even though some people say that the mm set at 35mm is good enough.
To save on price, one option is to go with a reputable second hand dealer, like KEH. Could save a couple of bucks that way. Has anyone done filters for these yet? This is a great comparative piece, though, for UV lenses, and if nothing else gives you a feel of brands to trust.
Before buying any non-kit lens for A, I think it should be a good idea to check, if you have Lightroom, with the pictures took with the kit lens mm to see what is the focal you use the most.
You would be surprised with the result! Take a big bunch of photo in your LR Library, see all the metadata of the complete bunch, the you see all the focal you used. Also if possible maybe a new feature would be to compare flashes?
Pretty much the only way that springs to mind to get a bit more light in is to adapt a lens from another system, either one with an already faster aperture, or using a Speed Booster adapter, which lets a camera capture more light.
Autofocus in low light is always a hard thing. Mirrorless cameras are getting better at this slowly and the newer crop of cameras claim to be able to catch focus in some pretty low light conditions.
But until then, yeah, getting better with MF will serve you pretty well. Body upgrading would also be tricky. Pretty much the only slightly better option out there for you right now is the Sony a though it does have a greatly improved AF system.
If you want anything more substantial, you have to push into the A7 territory, which is full frame, and a whole different ballgame. I wanted a mirrorless camera for the portability.

All of which would benefit from having a long zoom around. Some are better quality than others, some might lose some optical quality, or drop AF speed. I would never go on a trip with just a prime.

I tried it for a week compared to kit lens and Sony native primes. Just disappointed because its quality is similar to the kit lens while at 2. Perhaps the m silver or the G? The Sony E mm is also noticeably softer and displays significantly more vignetting and distortion.

Indeed that Sigma range would have been perfect for walk - around even as subs of the wider prime as you suggested, however the wish and hunt will continue. Perhaps I am being too harsh on the Z from my non-professional testing.
I will do some more digging before sending it back. Though i ordered the 32mm Touit just now in replacement before the promotion runs out of time. So how do u like the Z since u had it awhile? The color renderings are superb.
However, it was the sharpness - i was being overly critical on this small sized zoom lens. I think that i will have this lens on for most of time out as my walk around - Zeiss and F1. Now since I know both of those lenses are really top notch I have a hard decision to make.
I would for sure rather get the Flexibility matter way more than absolute lens quality for taking photos. You are out and about. You want to take photos of something or someone you encounter. You may want to get some wide shots to give context.
You may want to get some detail shots. You may want to take a good portrait as well. A prime like the 32mm will not be wide enough for establishing wide shots. Otherwise too much fiddling switching lenses, that also increases the risk of dust on the sensor and dropping something.
I am considering the Zeiss for my alpha a The kit does not seem bad, but the distortion at 16mm is a joke lightroom corrects it but it crops the edges. Zooms allow taking of better photos, better composition, better interaction with random subjects.
But sometimes I like carrying a 20mm or a fast 35mm with my nikon. Absolutely the is the perfect range for out and about. Perhaps one day i will give it another try.

Was maybe going to get some sort of steady thing for it too. I just got the A Planning to get Zeiss. But lenses are a lot more expensive than Nikons but will get an adapter ring to mount some old Nikons like a fast 35mm prime.
If you shoot events and conventions you need a lens like the Fiddling with primes under pressure is a pain. If you shoot portrait work in the studio primes are great. I purchased a 2nd hand pankcake lens which is great when you want to throw it in your pocket when out for drinks and dinner.

Either the 35mm or 50mm lens will give you pretty solid results, you just will have to shoot from a bit of a distance. Any of these lenses will work with the a, so pick whichever one sounds good to you, and fits your budget!

For work, I mainly use the QX30 to take photos with 30x optical zoom photos from an extension pole mount remote shooting. Personal use of the QX1 would be totally different, rapid shot portraits of my kids, mainly.
I need to see how the lag is affected if I turn off the 2 second preview. My main concern was whether there was any reason to think the e-mount on the QX1 was in any way limited? Lag aside, should I expect the same performance and image quality and lens compatibility?

Can I say 32mm on a mirorless crop sensor is equalvalent to 57mm? The crop factor on an APS-C camera is around 1. So a 32mm lens gives you an equivalent focal length of 48mm. Only way I would shoot with primes is if I would carry 2 cameras.
I bought the Zeiss grey market for Anyway I am spoiled by old Nikon glass. If you have a A, it is cheaper to buy the Sigma 19mm and the Sony 50mm 1. Cameras are small enough to have 2 with primes in the bag.

Kit lenses tend to be a little lower quality than primes, but are totally functional. You can definitely learn on either, the kit lens will be a bit more flexible for having some zoom range; a prime will be a bit sharper and better in low light, but will require you to be more creative in your positioning.
Neither is right nor wrong! I also purchased the Sony wide angle lense. Either of the zoom lenses we list here would work, with a bit of fiddling. The mm is good if you only want to carry a single lens with you everywhere, though is pretty big.

I wish the Rokinon, like old Nikkor MF lenses. I think in general super wides can produce photos that feel a little gimmicky. It is good to have for interiors. I think you can buy the Rokinon 12mm and another A body if still for sale than the mm alone.
