It looks pretty believable as it carries forward the design philosophy of the surface tablet. I am also a Nokia phone, but will stick to windows ecosystem only. It's just going to be a slightly less ugly picture. When you're closer to that 10 lux cutoff, the low-light camera can salvage a picture the main camera might bungle. Don't get me wrong—for the money, this is a solid camera.
It just can't touch the experience on a Pixel or Galaxy S8. The OnePlus 5T's specs are more or less identical to the OnePlus 5, so you should already know what to expect here from a performance standpoint.
I don't know how much of a difference the extra 2GB of RAM makes, but I have no issue with apps falling out of memory on this phone. I've even had large games sit quietly in RAM overnight.
In my time with the OnePlus 5T, this phone has been blazing fast. Apps open in a snap and multitasking is a breeze. The quick-switch shortcut to flip between two apps doesn't exhibit any lag as it does on phones like the Galaxy S8.
Performance is usually right up there with the Pixel 2, but the consistency of the OP5T falls a bit short. Sometimes there's a spot of lag when installing apps or taking burst shot photos.
I've also spotted some mysterious lag in the notification shade. I'm being nitpicky here—this is still one of the fastest phones I've ever used. Before I talk about battery life, here's the standard disclaimer.
The way I use my phone is probably very different than the way you use your phone. Thus, your experiences may differ from mine. For the record, I used this phone full-time while reviewing.
I managed email on three accounts, sent messages, played some games, streamed music, and browsed the web. The OnePlus 5T made it through about a day and a half of moderate to heavy usage with between four and a half and five hours of screen time each charge cycle.
With heavier usage in a single day, you can eke out around six hours. The 5T's battery life is slightly weaker than the OP5, but not by much. A small reduction from the slightly bigger screen is to be expected.
As it stands, the OnePlus 5T gets above average battery life. I'm torn on Dash Charge. If you want more Dash Charge cables and adapters, you have to go through OP itself.
The charging speed on third-party cables is less than half as fast as Dash Charge. Google released the code for Android 8. The OnePlus 5T comes with Android 7. I wouldn't give Samsung or Motorola a pass on this, so OP doesn't get one either.
There're no two ways about it—launching this phone with Nougat is a mistake. OnePlus' version of Nougat is still pretty nice, though. That first build on the OP2 was rough, but it's gotten much better.
OxygenOS includes features like screen gestures, a dark UI mode, a status bar icon manager, and nav bar customizations. On that last count, you might be interested to know the new on-screen buttons don't look like stock Android exactly.
They're a little smaller and closer together, a bit like Huawei phones. The double-tap and long-press shortcuts are still available in the settings, though. The home screen got a few visual tweaks for the OnePlus 5T, but there are no functional changes.
The Shelf UI is still there, and I still don't see the point. Having the Google Feed and a selection of custom OnePlus widgets for the home screen panels would make more sense. There's also a new "Parallel Apps" feature that allows you to clone things like Facebook and Skype to more easily use them with multiple accounts.
OnePlus is bringing renewed focus to an old favorite—Face Unlock. So, how does it work? Better than I expected, but still lacking in elegance. OP's Face Unlock works with the front-facing camera, so it can only do so much.
If you're inside that camera's field of view, the phone detects your face and unlocks the phone as soon as it wakes up. When it works, it's effectively instantaneous. You might not even see the lock screen.
However, Face Unlock can be thrown off by poor lighting, extreme angles, and even sunglasses. I have this feature enabled, but I still prefer to just unlock the phone with a fingerprint.
The OnePlus 5T looks and feels like a more expensive phone than it is. The aluminum unibody design is understated and inoffensive, and I'm pleased OP is sticking with the headphone jack.
Although, I think OnePlus would have been better served by keeping the old dual camera setup. Price increases are nothing new for OnePlus—every one of its phones has been a little more expensive.
I worry that eventually OnePlus is going to take it too far and it'll lose the "budget flagship" advantage. You have to pay that all to OnePlus up front, whereas Google, Samsung, and carriers offer free financing on phones.
Even if the OP5T is a bargain, it's still kind of a pain to buy. If you have a OnePlus 5, you probably don't need to run out and buy the 5T. It may be the perfect phone for a lot of people who are due for an upgrade.
It does a lot of things very well, and the rest is good enough. Hell, you could almost buy two of them for the price of a Note 8. I really wanted to get this phone, and I was waiting for it.
Good review Ryan, but as usual your camera samples are just terrible. You should improve this part of your reviews. Its his fault he doesn't get much diversity with his photos. We have a street and leaves that looks to be in his yard and photos of things on his desk.
It wouldn't be that hard to take some big buildings, Sunsets, street lights for low light samples, Pets, etc. There are two kinds of photos I really want to see. Pics of people or pets.
I get why Ryan didn't have a chance to do these shots due to the emabargo, and that is totally understandable. But yes way, way too many reviews of phones don't include the kinds of photos you mention, and it bugs the heck out out me.

I'm curious about memory management performance. Switching from a op5 to pixel 2 xl was a huge difference. Like i'm actually curious if my pixel 2 xl is bugged in some fashion because apps sometimes reload after switching between cycling between like apps.
A 4gb ram phone from papa google shouldn't be behaving like a chinese or samsung rom. Any chance you also have experience on LG phones? I'm currently on the V20 and the performance leaves a lot to be desired.
I ruled out Pixel because I'm just not willing to pay that much for so little other than quick performance and updates, it's kind of bland IMO. I'm almost certain I'll get the OP5T, but LG packages their phones so nicely and the V30 is looking good especially that wide angle lens.
I'd just hate to fall into that LG trap yet again and then be disappointed six months when performance takes a noticeable hit. Of course the speed and fluidity difference is big but the A1 does seem to keep more apps in memory medium to light apps at least.
I don't get why they keep changing things for the sake of it. I wouldn't say this phone is pricier than its predecessor. It actually ends up being a better deal than the OP5 itself.
I'm buying one, even if not for me, this time. As for the fingerprint sensor placement, I prefer it on the back. My index finger always rests naturally at that place so as I take the phone to my hand from my desk or out of my pocket, I unlock it without further movement.
But at the end I believe it's a matter of personal taste. I really like the possibility to unlock it directly while laying flat on a table or a desk without having to grab it.
I don't complain on the specific matter because I use Google's Smart Lock features and when - for example - I'm at home, I don't need to raise the phone to unlock it. There will still be phones that put the scanner on the back after they're able to put it under the screen and it will be because of preference, not cost.

Should Oneplus just stay at the same price as the original OP while parts go up? Well, people tend to want everything for the price of nothing. OP keeps true to their goal of selling a flagship device much cheaper than the rest.
But cheaper doesn't mean cheap. I would suggest you read the rest of the review. Specifically, the last section where I address that. If anything, the Price should be in the "good" category.

I don't care about bezels. Couldn't care more or less about the phone having a bezel if I like it. My favorite phone is still the Nexus 6 and oh my god has bezels.
That said, yes, I prefer speed, support and camera over anything else. And the 5T is way worse in any of this. However I have eyes. See the case of the 3T, released 6 months after the 3, the last update is also Oreo.

The dual camera setup at his current state is a gimmick, the 5T almost never used he second sensor due to lightning conditions. The 3T was released 6 months after the 3 and they will kill support with Oreo.
Are you fking joking me? OnePlus is all about killing specs forgetting the software. People say they have a nice rom but they actually suck providing support over time. Buying a pixel for a bit less than the 5T is a more secure ground.

I would most definitely use it. I can't be bothered to charge a watch every day. It was terrific, but it was just too big, so I took it off my keychain.
I don't think you can buy them anymore. I looked into that. I need a watch to last at least a week on my wrist without charging or else it ends up in a drawer. Then you have Samsung Pay no matter what Android phone you have.

The google camera could fix that for me. My eyes won't let me go to a p screen though. Only if it had a 2k screen. You can also avail this. Yeah, I started the return process of my V30 in favor of this and was even selling a couple last gen consoles to get the cash together up front, but after seeing this leak, I'm glad I waited until the last minute to send my V30 back.

There's more to displays than just resolution you know. And fyi most phones that have QHD displays still run at p mostly. Display is a big factor but it also depends if the default color profile is poorly calibrated and if the consumer even notices.

I've never had a problem with the p screen. The OP3 screen is nice, sharp, and bright. I couldn't imagine needing more. They removed the Telephoto lens: I hear ya, and I agree, but if they upgraded the camera, even to a slightly lesser quality than the Pixel or iPhone X, it'd substantially increase the cost.
They have to cut corners somewhere, I just wished they chose other areas than both camera and display. Maybe going forward they can introduce a more premium device to compete more closely with the bigger flagships.
Personally I'd give up that fancy non bezeless screen, maybe something like the new Razer phone. My music and back up is 79GB Not counting pictures and videos. I'm sure many others it wouldn't be.

I don't know if there's a way to tell from within Android, but sometimes it's listed on specs pages. I see spec compromises on every OnePlus phone. Didn't even notice the lack of an IP rating.
It's possible it just didn't make it in the leak though. Lower resolution screens help prolong battery life. There's absolutely no reason to put QHD or higher displays just because everybody else does it or unless you want to have a gimmick like Sony's 4k display.
I'm actually laughing at how Samsung phones right now that has a QHD screen start at a Full HD resolution out of the box and no one would even take notice. It's not settling, it's smart use of features.

They'd have to decrease the size of the battery severely had they gone with that display size. Either that or they'd have to increase the size of the bezel. Have there been any treble phones released yet?
Wish the 5t had the pixel's camera and OS and it would be a win. Google also worked with some manufacturers to make their phones treble ready even though they launched with Nougat, Samsung is believed to be one of them.

It wasn't laziness, it was business. They'll probably release oreo for both of them at the exact same time Yeah, but the point is project treble, not oreo, which would extend the lifetime of this phone and speed up updates even without any further work from oneplus.
Like I said before this Project Treble thing will not help the android updates situation. Oems will completely ignore it and stick with their BS update schedules and policies.
Even though it's mandatory if you ship a device with 8. Because on project treble you can run AOSP rom with minimal development, even future versions after your manufacturer stopped updating the phone, because it's forward compatible.
It's a huge deal. On the sidenote it will be easier for manufacturers to build updates so they just might do it more often, but if they don't - no problem, you could just install AOSP and be done with it.
That's already happening, so not sure what you're on about. Secondly you're overestimating the value of project treble, it won't include everything necessary to give you a working custom ROM, there is still a lot of closed source binaries that OEM's will never release that means your custom OS won't work as well as the manufacturer OS.
That's the thing, they don't have to release anything. In treble Android standardizes the way the system hooks into vendor drivers, so custom ROMs can just hook into that without porting anything.
It's not happening already, it's a chore for devs to make aosp working on devices without treble. It's changing with 8. You're dreaming if you think things like camera blobs and other closed source binaries will ever be released.
You didn't get my point, most custom ROMs already do what is being mentioned although significantly slower, treble just means you will see stable builds of AOSP ROMs significantly faster but the issues that plague them such as subpar camera performance and missing features compared to OEM stock OS will still be there as those parts will never be released.
I didn't miss your point, it's valid, but you just confirmed my point. Android updates will be faster and will last longer. Obviously not all features can be ported from manufacturer skins, but that wasn't the part of the discussion.
It'll definitely help Google extend support and I'm sure Sony will jump on it just because they're pretty good about updates, buy it isn't going to change the way a company prioritizes updates. It'll just make it easier for the few OEMs that already do it.

Because on project treble you can run AOSP rom with minimal development, even future versions after your manufacturer stopped updating the phone, because it's forward compatible. It's a huge deal.
On the sidenote it will be easier for manufacturers to build updates so they just might do it more often, but if they don't - no problem, you could just install AOSP and be done with it. That's already happening, so not sure what you're on about.
Secondly you're overestimating the value of project treble, it won't include everything necessary to give you a working custom ROM, there is still a lot of closed source binaries that OEM's will never release that means your custom OS won't work as well as the manufacturer OS.
That's the thing, they don't have to release anything. In treble Android standardizes the way the system hooks into vendor drivers, so custom ROMs can just hook into that without porting anything.
It's not happening already, it's a chore for devs to make aosp working on devices without treble. It's changing with 8. You're dreaming if you think things like camera blobs and other closed source binaries will ever be released.
You didn't get my point, most custom ROMs already do what is being mentioned although significantly slower, treble just means you will see stable builds of AOSP ROMs significantly faster but the issues that plague them such as subpar camera performance and missing features compared to OEM stock OS will still be there as those parts will never be released.
I didn't miss your point, it's valid, but you just confirmed my point. Android updates will be faster and will last longer. Obviously not all features can be ported from manufacturer skins, but that wasn't the part of the discussion.
It'll definitely help Google extend support and I'm sure Sony will jump on it just because they're pretty good about updates, buy it isn't going to change the way a company prioritizes updates.

I guess for me it's more of a bonus if its there, rather than a a disappointment that it's not. Plus, it doesn't guarantee longer support, it just makes longer support easier for the manufacturer.

Xiaomi sells all of their phones close to cost because they offer extra services where they make their money. On top of that, they are more than a phone company so they can afford it.

If the camera can stack up against the best, sure. Stickin' with my OPO for a little bit longer. The best choice for a phone this year for affordability and futureproof ahead of its time specs is the Samsung S7 Exynos version.
Six inch is kinda stretching it I think. It might be time for them to start considering upping it to 2k if they are going to go that big. The PPI is probably about the same as on the 5, just extra vertical pixels for the longer aspect ratio.
To be fair, the Huawei Mate 8 and Mate 9 had 6" p panels, and the resolution on them was never mentioned as inadequate. I was set on the OP5T, but I'm out in the city right now taking photos with my girlfriend on my V20 and now I'm not so sure I want to get rid of the wide angle lens.
I just reactivated my V30 for the weekend. If I want to return it, it has to be in the mail on Monday. Look at that camera bump now that the screen extends above the camera. Looks like a good two millimeters of extra hump.
That would stick out from an Otterbox from the looks of it. This is with one of my gun grip skins. I couldn't imagine dealing with the 5T. The OP5 is the first phone I have had with any bump and I don't like it.
I am always having to be careful when I set it down. It's the same thing with the Pixel 2. I covered the glass with it today and still have a bump. Got that last second 'grip' though if it slips.
That might be what they tell you You can look at it and see that it is raised up the thickness of a screen. OP5 screen ends at the camera. Imagine if they had increase the thickness of the phone by 2mm and put a mah battery inside.
I wonder how many people would have complained it as too thick? Logically, a lot of people would, since OEMs try so hard to make their phones thin. But I wonder if they're simply mistaken, and would sell more phones if the batteries were bigger.
I still wonder, why they settle everytime with battery caps. Another varient, slightly thick with Ah battery is a sure take to me..! Honestly the thin phone trend we have nowadays is terrible and severely limits things like battery capacities, since the industry still hasn't come up with an entirely new type of batteries for mobile devices.

I don't know why, my OnePlus 3 Still works perfectly and is running Android 8. So no OIS, no expandable storage, same battery mAh with bigger display It seems that they have changed the telephoto sensor for other sensor with same focal aperture to improve the low light photos with the trick of merge pixels.
Not sure if it could perform well till see the real result. Add OIS for low light plus maintaining the telephoto lens would has been, by far, a better option. But they are limited in space due to be a R11 clone.

Drop it a couple of times when i was drunk and got some marks on the edges, but the display waas still clean and unfractured: So no OIS, no expandable storage, same battery I expected, at least, a bigger one, mono speaker, comes with Nougat 7.
A main camera with OIS plus maintaining the telephoto would has been, by far, a better option. You pay for luxury features. You can't expect phones to have everything at a sub price.
Even cheaper with buy one, get one deals. And there is no GCam port for the OP5 that works without artifacts, afaik. Curious about this on the 5T because it had become an important box a phone should tick to me.
They started USB-C with v2. That was Wow, at that time. With the 5T the lack of IP certification definitely is a deal breaker. Ideally is pixel 2 XL, but to expensive for me.
The 5T looks fine, but p screen on the good side at less resolution more battery life, but I would like better resolution Huawei has propietary UI, that I dont like.
Maybe my best choice is to replace the battery on my 6P after 2 years is only lasting 1. Really interesting that they dropped the telephoto lens, I'm kind of confused over how this new setup works.
One sensor for good light and one for low light. Kind of seems redundant to have two in this case. But I guess we will find out soon enough how it works in practice. This is probably one of the better implementations of the 2: I still wouldn't want a 2: I'll choose Essential PH-1 any day over this garbage.

The OP5 has a better camera and software than the Essential PH-1 so not sure what benefit besides looks you're getting on that phone. I've seen reviews such as Mr.

They are not the best when it comes to updates and customer appreciation. Essential already has November Security patch, what does OnePlus 5 has? So your measure of software support is security patches?
Oneplus releases tons of updates, we get one every 2 weeks on beta and stable gets one every 2 months. The Oneplus 5 has been getting tons of updates as well. They aren't fast at giving security updates despite the fact the phone is getting updates.
They are very good when it comes to updates in my experience, not sure what you're talking about. Every single phone on the markets so claiming everyone knows is a silly statement, how many articles are posted about the Pixel's?

We were talking about updates. The Essential does have a smaller battery and a crappy camera. What kind of battery life are you seeing on it? Yeah I watched some youtube videos and that's how I ultimately choose to buy phones, based on reviews I read or watch, can't waste my time buying devices that are known for having issues, the price is very good at the moment, but you can get an S8 at that price now.
Larger than that is likely to appeal to the mainstream phablet users and the elderly. A removal back like those on some of the latest Lumia phones would be great. Hope MS also comes up with a fix to the overheating issue currently experienced by windows phone users even from a few minutes of use as the much awaited surface phone sees the light of day.

Edward, As far as android is concerned, it is thing of future.. Your device, your choice of everything, you can customize it all… You could easily disable any updates from applications settings and choose to only update required apps may be update none if you want..
It has most open form of OS, UI and apps available, gives you complete freedom. Unlike apple, Windows phones which restrict you for lots many things in the name of authenticity.. Anyways, your money, your choice!

What you think Apples new iPhone 7 will come in dual sim or not. Microsoft willl be number 1. I have used xl. This is but my opinion, all these phones are great in terms of tech but when it comes to style and elegance all these units are much of the same.
I understand the need for the bigger screens but when you sitting arround a table with a few phones on it, you think you looking at a TV monitor.. Whether thin or sleak its only what is on the inside that sets them all apart.
I just love the concept of the surface phone. It truly stands out in terms of design and functionality. It looks pretty believable as it carries forward the design philosophy of the surface tablet.
I am also a Nokia phone, but will stick to windows ecosystem only. I am sure that the upcoming Nokia phone will be an android phone, but if I could get that phone running windows, i will be among the first ones to pick it.

The sensor isn't as prominent on the back as it is on many phones, though. It's almost flush with the aluminum surface. That makes it a bit harder to find by touch. The last few years of OP phones have sported some of the most impressive fingerprint sensors on the market.
The 5T's sensor is still one of the best you can get. It's fast and accurate, but I have noticed more failed reads than I ever got on the OnePlus 5. This isn't a huge problem, but I suspect OnePlus still has some optimization to do here.
When it does recognize my finger which is still almost every time, the device unlocks instantly. I will admit to being a bit perplexed by OnePlus' camera decisions on the 5T.
It's still a dual-sensor setup, but the telephoto lens from the OP5 is gone. Instead, there's a 20MP low-light sensor the one closer to the flash paired with the same 16MP regular camera.
I was never thrilled with the quality of the 2x zoom photos on the OnePlus 5, but there have been times I was happy to have the zoom mostly outdoors. The benefits of this new camera setup are much less clear to me.
In good light, the performance of the 5T's camera is almost exactly the same as the OnePlus 5. Outdoor shots are exposed well, and there's good detail in most shots. Some fine details can end up a little fuzzy from heavy-handed processing, though.
The HDR mode on this phone still lacks compared to what you get with a more expensive phone. HDR can improve shots, but it seems easily overwhelmed. Focus is reasonably fast, and capture speeds are very quick.
I'm not crazy about the OP5T's camera performance indoors. Shots are often too warm and soft, but it's better than other phones in its price range. There's still no optical stabilization on the OP5T, but it has electronic stabilization.
I've seen some implementations of EIS that work very well, and some that are essentially worthless. OnePlus' version can compensate for small movements, but it's not up to the task in lower light when shutter speeds get longer.
You need to hold the phone reasonably stable to avoid blurry pics. It wasn't clear to the user that was happening, and the OnePlus 5T has a similar setup with the low-light camera.
Below 10 lux of brightness, the secondary camera takes over. There's no indication in the UI when this happens, though. So, how is this a low-light camera? OnePlus says it uses something called "Intelligent Pixel Technology" to combine pixels to increase brightness and reduce noise.
Yet, there's still a 2X zoom button in the OP5T's camera app. This seems misleading when you're just getting digital zoom. You can make out objects more clearly on the 5T with its low-light camera, but that's rarely the difference between a good photo and a bad one.
It's just going to be a slightly less ugly picture. When you're closer to that 10 lux cutoff, the low-light camera can salvage a picture the main camera might bungle. Don't get me wrong—for the money, this is a solid camera.
It just can't touch the experience on a Pixel or Galaxy S8. The OnePlus 5T's specs are more or less identical to the OnePlus 5, so you should already know what to expect here from a performance standpoint.
I don't know how much of a difference the extra 2GB of RAM makes, but I have no issue with apps falling out of memory on this phone. I've even had large games sit quietly in RAM overnight.
In my time with the OnePlus 5T, this phone has been blazing fast. Apps open in a snap and multitasking is a breeze. The quick-switch shortcut to flip between two apps doesn't exhibit any lag as it does on phones like the Galaxy S8.
Performance is usually right up there with the Pixel 2, but the consistency of the OP5T falls a bit short. Sometimes there's a spot of lag when installing apps or taking burst shot photos.
I've also spotted some mysterious lag in the notification shade. I'm being nitpicky here—this is still one of the fastest phones I've ever used. Before I talk about battery life, here's the standard disclaimer.
The way I use my phone is probably very different than the way you use your phone. Thus, your experiences may differ from mine. For the record, I used this phone full-time while reviewing. I managed email on three accounts, sent messages, played some games, streamed music, and browsed the web.
The OnePlus 5T made it through about a day and a half of moderate to heavy usage with between four and a half and five hours of screen time each charge cycle. With heavier usage in a single day, you can eke out around six hours.
The 5T's battery life is slightly weaker than the OP5, but not by much. A small reduction from the slightly bigger screen is to be expected. As it stands, the OnePlus 5T gets above average battery life.
I'm torn on Dash Charge. If you want more Dash Charge cables and adapters, you have to go through OP itself. The charging speed on third-party cables is less than half as fast as Dash Charge.
Google released the code for Android 8. The OnePlus 5T comes with Android 7. I wouldn't give Samsung or Motorola a pass on this, so OP doesn't get one either. There're no two ways about it—launching this phone with Nougat is a mistake.
OnePlus' version of Nougat is still pretty nice, though. That first build on the OP2 was rough, but it's gotten much better. OxygenOS includes features like screen gestures, a dark UI mode, a status bar icon manager, and nav bar customizations.
On that last count, you might be interested to know the new on-screen buttons don't look like stock Android exactly. They're a little smaller and closer together, a bit like Huawei phones. The double-tap and long-press shortcuts are still available in the settings, though.
The home screen got a few visual tweaks for the OnePlus 5T, but there are no functional changes. The Shelf UI is still there, and I still don't see the point. Having the Google Feed and a selection of custom OnePlus widgets for the home screen panels would make more sense.
There's also a new "Parallel Apps" feature that allows you to clone things like Facebook and Skype to more easily use them with multiple accounts. OnePlus is bringing renewed focus to an old favorite—Face Unlock.
So, how does it work? Better than I expected, but still lacking in elegance. OP's Face Unlock works with the front-facing camera, so it can only do so much. If you're inside that camera's field of view, the phone detects your face and unlocks the phone as soon as it wakes up.
When it works, it's effectively instantaneous. You might not even see the lock screen. However, Face Unlock can be thrown off by poor lighting, extreme angles, and even sunglasses.
I have this feature enabled, but I still prefer to just unlock the phone with a fingerprint. The OnePlus 5T looks and feels like a more expensive phone than it is.
The aluminum unibody design is understated and inoffensive, and I'm pleased OP is sticking with the headphone jack. Although, I think OnePlus would have been better served by keeping the old dual camera setup.
Price increases are nothing new for OnePlus—every one of its phones has been a little more expensive. I worry that eventually OnePlus is going to take it too far and it'll lose the "budget flagship" advantage.
You have to pay that all to OnePlus up front, whereas Google, Samsung, and carriers offer free financing on phones. Even if the OP5T is a bargain, it's still kind of a pain to buy. If you have a OnePlus 5, you probably don't need to run out and buy the 5T.
It may be the perfect phone for a lot of people who are due for an upgrade. It does a lot of things very well, and the rest is good enough. Hell, you could almost buy two of them for the price of a Note 8.
I really wanted to get this phone, and I was waiting for it. Good review Ryan, but as usual your camera samples are just terrible. You should improve this part of your reviews. Its his fault he doesn't get much diversity with his photos.
We have a street and leaves that looks to be in his yard and photos of things on his desk. It wouldn't be that hard to take some big buildings, Sunsets, street lights for low light samples, Pets, etc.
There are two kinds of photos I really want to see. Pics of people or pets. I get why Ryan didn't have a chance to do these shots due to the emabargo, and that is totally understandable.
But yes way, way too many reviews of phones don't include the kinds of photos you mention, and it bugs the heck out out me. I don't know what you mean by usually. I do usually have more pics, but this was a tight embargo and I didn't have time to get as many postable images as I'd like.
I plan to add more to the gallery later. I just wanted to at least get a few posted in varying light to give you an idea of camera performance. What more do you want? He's got outdoor shots, indoor in low light, and some to show how much detail the mediocre cameras can pick up.
If you're going to criticize him, at least offer up examples of what you'd like to see. It's like me saying your choice of clothing is terrible, and then leaving it at that. I'm curious about memory management performance.
Switching from a op5 to pixel 2 xl was a huge difference. Like i'm actually curious if my pixel 2 xl is bugged in some fashion because apps sometimes reload after switching between cycling between like apps.
A 4gb ram phone from papa google shouldn't be behaving like a chinese or samsung rom. Any chance you also have experience on LG phones? I'm currently on the V20 and the performance leaves a lot to be desired.
I ruled out Pixel because I'm just not willing to pay that much for so little other than quick performance and updates, it's kind of bland IMO. I'm almost certain I'll get the OP5T, but LG packages their phones so nicely and the V30 is looking good especially that wide angle lens.
I'd just hate to fall into that LG trap yet again and then be disappointed six months when performance takes a noticeable hit. Of course the speed and fluidity difference is big but the A1 does seem to keep more apps in memory medium to light apps at least.
I don't get why they keep changing things for the sake of it. I wouldn't say this phone is pricier than its predecessor. It actually ends up being a better deal than the OP5 itself.
I'm buying one, even if not for me, this time. As for the fingerprint sensor placement, I prefer it on the back. My index finger always rests naturally at that place so as I take the phone to my hand from my desk or out of my pocket, I unlock it without further movement.
But at the end I believe it's a matter of personal taste. I really like the possibility to unlock it directly while laying flat on a table or a desk without having to grab it. I don't complain on the specific matter because I use Google's Smart Lock features and when - for example - I'm at home, I don't need to raise the phone to unlock it.
There will still be phones that put the scanner on the back after they're able to put it under the screen and it will be because of preference, not cost. I've had both and they're both equally as useful to me, which seems to be a rare stance as much as I see people split on this preference.
Under the screen makes sense, but placing it on the front just because when you're using on-screen buttons see some Motos and Huaweis seems space-wasting and an eyesore. These add up, and could eventually put OP in direct competition with the likes of Google and Samsung.

Well, people tend to want everything for the price of nothing. OP keeps true to their goal of selling a flagship device much cheaper than the rest. But cheaper doesn't mean cheap. I would suggest you read the rest of the review.
Specifically, the last section where I address that. If anything, the Price should be in the "good" category. Because companies like Samsung and Apple are in a completely different league.
Its the same reason why a lot of people give Google crap for trying to sell the pixels at the prices Samsung and Apple charge. Sad to see them lose sight of what made them relevant in the first place.
