Oreo update should improve things dramatically on S8 due to never getting the 7. Coming from the OG Pixel XL I agree about the smoothness of the UI, but lack of features means to me a waste of money, just get a very expensive simple phone.
While I can understand that for android enthusiasts the Pixels are better, I think for the general consumer Samsung's flagships right now are as close to perfect as you can get - including their software.
Can't say I agree. I'm honestly not sure why people buy the Google phones at their current price point, unless you're really concerned about having the best camera.
Yes, the average consumer does want the best camera. People take lots of photos for social media and memories, and they want them to look good in the most convenient package possible. The hardware is for sure.
It's too bad they're constantly in the news for some shady data mining or security flaw. If you care at all about security they're not the best choice, even though they offer a great value.
Sure they won't use most of the extra features in a Galaxy but at the same time, I think most will benifited by atleast one of the features which fits there usecase. I say this because apart from me, everyone else in my family also have the latest galaxy S7, S8, Note 8 and while setting up the phone for them, I found that everyone was interested in some feature like the different modes in the camera.
The thing is smartphones are used so much nowadays in every aspect of our lives. One the one hand, yes, I was more thinking of people who, whole they are not enthusiasts in that they want the latest update, still want a flagship for it's software and hardware features.
Those people would probably be very happy with something like an S8, because they use way more than the basic features. But they're also of course only a part of the general populace - most people only need a good mid-range or budged phone, and for them, something clean and simple might be better.
On the other hand though, I think you're still underestimating the average smartphone user. Even those people who don't need anything better than a steady mid-ranger use so much more than social media and a dialer nowadays!
Hell, my mom is probably the closest you get to that, but even she's out there using Google photos, translate, Shazam, task lists, a few games and so on. Obviously I'm not gonna recommend she get an S8 I got her a moto G5 by the way and she's super happy so far, but then again, she's definitely less tech-literate than the average user.
Will it get updates for a couple of years? Will it not get updates after a couple of years? I still hate their recent apps ui and bixby and it's button, but the note 8 is the best phone they've ever made.
And their software is better than ever before. I won't comment on bixby because I don't use it. But it's button is awesome! We can assign useful shortcuts to it using BxActions app.
It is a button remapper app. It let's you easily reassign the purpose of the bixby button. It also let's you remap the volume buttons. For instance, mine is setup to toggle my flashlight if I double tap the volume down button with the screen off.
An actual customizable button would indeed be awesome. It's not janky at all, it works very well. I would rather have this button than not because people will find a way to reprogram it.
I have single press to mute, double press for music, and long press to google assistant. So useful and no lag after input. The bezels around the edges of the display are probably because of this squeeze feature.
So it's not invisible. Now I don't care about bezels on any phone, but most folks seem to care. And it doesn't really matter that it links to a better service. The posibilities are endless yet they lock you down to google assistant.
Sure google assistant can do most of the things I have mentioned, but it is quicker to do so with just a squeeze. The good thing about Bixby button is that you can download remapping maps off the Google play store to make it something more useful.
I read that at the time, but I've been using BxActions for months now the mode where you give it permissions using ADB commands, no root required and I have never felt any lag whatsoever. I've become really, really used to pressing that button to toggle the Do Not Disturb mode when in meetings or similar, and double pressing it for flashlight I just wish it was located somewhere else so I didn't accidentally press it every time I press the power button too Bxactions causes no lag for me.
Ive turned my bxbutton in to a contextual button that is super useful. Accessibility API usage causes lag on Android as a whole. It isn't just Touchwiz. I guess my edited comment didn't go though; I'm talking about the lag from that.
I agree that Samsung is at fault for not giving us the ability to remap natively. No it's Samsung's fault for disabling the button so we had to use the accessibility work around. Accessibility wasn't meant for things like this.
It's a bad work around. I believe he was agreeing with you on that. It's however not Samsung's fault that accessibility usage causes lag. That is on Google and affects way more than just this remapper.
Without Oreo, I can't use Enpass a password manager with auto field entry because of lag from Accessibility usage. What do you hate about the recent apps ui? I thought it looked weird at first coming from something very stock like, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
Wish there was a way to get back to normal The slotted scrolling always makes me hot the wrong app. I got used to it pretty quickly though - mostly because I was so happy to finally be rid of sony's huge and fugly small apps bar.
I get what you mean, and thought it was weird at first too. But it assures that you always have enough space to actually tap on one of 4 recent app. When it would be totally 'fluent' it would become unreliable sometimes as there is not much space left on the upper few apps.
That really doesn't mena a lot. Touchwiz has always been utter, utter crap. Now they improved it to 'just bearable'. The bulk of my early Android experience was rallying between HTC and Samsung, then briefly Sony during the Z3 days when they did Android devices properly.
I agree with everything in the article but would go on to build on the software UX front. We have come full circle, and I mean a full one with software. In we were able to completely overturn the Samsung UX without root and make it look like stock Android.
This is absolutely huge news and a massive plus point for enthusiasts who love the cleaner aesthetic of a stock or Pixel 2 System UI. No other OEM has this kind of integration with Substratum without root as far as I recall, and the support only keeps getting stronger and stronger with Samsung devices as Oreo starts closing off on the beta and emerges into final release.
The article states Samsung offers the best bang for buck out of all of its competitors. This is absolutely true, and I cannot see this changing in, or even Everyone else is just playing follow the leader now it seems.
While I wouldn't say that Samsung is the best bang for the buck I'd probably give that title to oneplus, I would say that they're overall the best. They're even cheaper priced than what most people think.

It is perfectly placed under my index finger when I grab the phone, so that unlocking the phone with my fingerprint is quick and effortless. Much easier and quicker than face recognition! So you don't find it hard to read the fingerprint reader?
You get the phone unlocking pretty easily whenever you do? This really depends on personal experience; especially how big your hands are and how you hold your phone. Many people say they got used to it, some absolutely hate it, some really like it but those are definitely in the minority, from what I've heard.
I have an S8 which is comparatively small and small hands, so I tend to grip the phone a bit higher, and it works really well for me. I'd suggest that you test it out in person.
But if this is the only issue keeping you from buying it, I'd say buy even if it seems a bit impractical at first, and give it a week to see if you get used to it; return it if you don't.
No, it's perfectly positioned under my index finger when I pick up my phone. Quickest, easiest unlock ever. Pixel software is too bland and empty for me. You have to find apps on the playstore to do most simple things, that ruins the UX for me having to rely on third party devs to create a consistent experience.

I'm strongly considering the S9 as my next phone Had the S6 and then the S7 edge. The S7 was definitely a huge step up from that S6 in terms of performance and battery life.
With that said, I'm now using the Pixel 2 and will never even consider a Samsung again. Samsung definitely makes great hardware but lets not kid ourselves about its improvement in smoothness anymore.
The Pixel's software is delightfully fluid and the camera is great, but it's missing a lot of features that I loved on the Note. Plus, I really don't want to be without a headphone jack.
Don't worry about the software, we have treble - just import the international exynos model. It's not like you will have warranty after flashing, so you aren't losing out on much if you import.
I hope they will finally use exynos in some CDMA regions this year, I think the patents have expired. I had the S2 but I wasn't much into tech and related news at that time.
Can you please explain what you meant by "will properly make them different from the others for the first time since the S2"? Off the top of my head response: The S2 and its competitor's were the first generation of dual core phones, and Samsung's processor was substantially ahead of the competition from Qualcomm, nVidia and Texas Instruments.
Enjoy the boned software and they will enjoy the fully featured samsung experience. Yes a bit slow but you can easily change animation speed and it will work as intended. Yes, it's not features rich like samsung experience 9.
I can't mention all of them but Google it. You can play music to your earphones and play YouTube to your speaker. You can use earphones and when the phone detects a screaming baby it will warn you good for those with babies.
The superior multi window. The best display in Android. Multi accounts for apps. Hiding navbar and using gestures or 3d home button. And so much more man. It's not speed, it's jank.
My note 8 has more features than my pixel 2 xl, but I haven't touched the note in a month. My co-workers never had a crash or hangups on their note 8 or note 5. And btw my note 3 for 4 years never had a single crash more than twice a year when surfing a high demanding app.
I was talking about performance. The Samsungs are great hardware wise and I love the look of the galaxy S8. I would hope someone could objectively review the S9 when it comes out and give a definitive 'yes' or 'no' to the question of whether or not the UI is laggy compared with phones with cleaner skins such as Pixel, Moto, OnePlus, etc.
Then the end user installs apps from the store and the lag begins. My S8 still feels like new, better even thanks to Oreo optimisations, though I am usually not too heavy on the 3rd party apps and add a lot of em to Samsung's "always sleep" list kinda like a built-in Greenify if I'm not mistaken.
I think it's difficult to be objective about that, because people's perception if "lag" or "smoothness" is different from one another. Nowadays, you don't really get lag in that it really stutters or apps open or switch super slowly, it's more of a general perception of whether or not the interface is smooth.
And yet you'll find many Samsung users saying that their phone is just as smooth as a Pixel. I'm one of those people who doesn't notice any difference, even after pretty direct comparison.
But then I found the option in the developer settings that let's you see the frame rate while you're using the phone, and it turns out: I just don't see it. So when people say there's no difference, it's not that they're shilling for Samsung or whatever, most likely they don't perceive the difference, while others do.
I'd always recommend just testing it out in person yourself in order to make a judgment. I very much prefer the bezels on the iPhone X. Rather have a slight bezel top and bottom and almost no side bezel over the black ring and notch on the iPX.
And yes, i think the essential notch looks ugly too for that matter. The size of the status bar disturbs me on the essential phone. I don't hate it's design as much as the ipx Since it's just smaller and symmetrical but damn does it cause some things to be forced to happen.
You can interact with the navbar and it can hide itself. Equating literal screen with bezel is disingenuous at best. The notch provides no such function. Yes, hard press the home button it's physically there under screen and swipe left for recents, right for back.
You can also use edge gestures. I like it a lot for being able to navigate my phone without bringing my fingers to the top or bottom edges of the screen. Gestures work completely fine on the 8 series you don't ever need your Nav bar but for double tapping the all apps twice for quick switch.
Not a fan of the big side bezels it makes the phone a little bit wider to hold than its supposed to be. What do you think this is, some sort of forum of open discussion? I think the X is a beautiful phone and it's fine that it's out of my pricerange.
I don't understand the hate. Getting downvoted into oblivion just for having a different opinion smh. That's true but it varies a lot from sub to sub and lots of subreddits welcome differing opinions.
The reason I dont like it is because on videos, its not symmetrical and it annoys the heck out of me, on portrate mode its fine. Also I dont like the limited space on the notification panel.
I'm not even an Android fanboy and would have highly considered an X if it weren't for that notch. Probably going with the 7 or 8 now. I've had Android since the Galaxy S4 and want to see if the iPhone is stall all hype and good marketing.
Like I said in a previous comment, the notch gives the phone a striking look. Design is subjective after all. Strikingly ugly if you ask me.

The thing is smartphones are used so much nowadays in every aspect of our lives. One the one hand, yes, I was more thinking of people who, whole they are not enthusiasts in that they want the latest update, still want a flagship for it's software and hardware features.
Those people would probably be very happy with something like an S8, because they use way more than the basic features. But they're also of course only a part of the general populace - most people only need a good mid-range or budged phone, and for them, something clean and simple might be better.
On the other hand though, I think you're still underestimating the average smartphone user. Even those people who don't need anything better than a steady mid-ranger use so much more than social media and a dialer nowadays!
Hell, my mom is probably the closest you get to that, but even she's out there using Google photos, translate, Shazam, task lists, a few games and so on. Obviously I'm not gonna recommend she get an S8 I got her a moto G5 by the way and she's super happy so far, but then again, she's definitely less tech-literate than the average user.
Will it get updates for a couple of years? Will it not get updates after a couple of years? I still hate their recent apps ui and bixby and it's button, but the note 8 is the best phone they've ever made.
And their software is better than ever before. I won't comment on bixby because I don't use it. But it's button is awesome! We can assign useful shortcuts to it using BxActions app.
It is a button remapper app. It let's you easily reassign the purpose of the bixby button. It also let's you remap the volume buttons. For instance, mine is setup to toggle my flashlight if I double tap the volume down button with the screen off.
An actual customizable button would indeed be awesome. It's not janky at all, it works very well. I would rather have this button than not because people will find a way to reprogram it. I have single press to mute, double press for music, and long press to google assistant.
So useful and no lag after input. The bezels around the edges of the display are probably because of this squeeze feature. So it's not invisible. Now I don't care about bezels on any phone, but most folks seem to care.
And it doesn't really matter that it links to a better service. The posibilities are endless yet they lock you down to google assistant. Sure google assistant can do most of the things I have mentioned, but it is quicker to do so with just a squeeze.
The good thing about Bixby button is that you can download remapping maps off the Google play store to make it something more useful. I read that at the time, but I've been using BxActions for months now the mode where you give it permissions using ADB commands, no root required and I have never felt any lag whatsoever.
I've become really, really used to pressing that button to toggle the Do Not Disturb mode when in meetings or similar, and double pressing it for flashlight I just wish it was located somewhere else so I didn't accidentally press it every time I press the power button too Bxactions causes no lag for me.
Ive turned my bxbutton in to a contextual button that is super useful. Accessibility API usage causes lag on Android as a whole. It isn't just Touchwiz. I guess my edited comment didn't go though; I'm talking about the lag from that.
I agree that Samsung is at fault for not giving us the ability to remap natively. No it's Samsung's fault for disabling the button so we had to use the accessibility work around. Accessibility wasn't meant for things like this.
It's a bad work around. I believe he was agreeing with you on that. It's however not Samsung's fault that accessibility usage causes lag. That is on Google and affects way more than just this remapper.
Without Oreo, I can't use Enpass a password manager with auto field entry because of lag from Accessibility usage. What do you hate about the recent apps ui?
I thought it looked weird at first coming from something very stock like, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Wish there was a way to get back to normal The slotted scrolling always makes me hot the wrong app.
I got used to it pretty quickly though - mostly because I was so happy to finally be rid of sony's huge and fugly small apps bar. I get what you mean, and thought it was weird at first too.
But it assures that you always have enough space to actually tap on one of 4 recent app. When it would be totally 'fluent' it would become unreliable sometimes as there is not much space left on the upper few apps.
That really doesn't mena a lot. Touchwiz has always been utter, utter crap. Now they improved it to 'just bearable'. The bulk of my early Android experience was rallying between HTC and Samsung, then briefly Sony during the Z3 days when they did Android devices properly.
I agree with everything in the article but would go on to build on the software UX front. We have come full circle, and I mean a full one with software. In we were able to completely overturn the Samsung UX without root and make it look like stock Android.
This is absolutely huge news and a massive plus point for enthusiasts who love the cleaner aesthetic of a stock or Pixel 2 System UI. No other OEM has this kind of integration with Substratum without root as far as I recall, and the support only keeps getting stronger and stronger with Samsung devices as Oreo starts closing off on the beta and emerges into final release.
The article states Samsung offers the best bang for buck out of all of its competitors. This is absolutely true, and I cannot see this changing in, or even Everyone else is just playing follow the leader now it seems.
While I wouldn't say that Samsung is the best bang for the buck I'd probably give that title to oneplus, I would say that they're overall the best. They're even cheaper priced than what most people think.
If you guys are wondering, the theme used in the screenshots of that article is Status Bar Icons for Samsung: That screenshot is mine, I included it just to show how close it can get to a Pixel look, and didn't anticipate there'd be so much interest in the setup I got a couple PMs about it since.
Here's all of it. You can probably find a better launcher option, since that screenshot is old. I've since moved on to the Oreo beta for testing and haven't felt the need to set it up like that again.
It is perfectly placed under my index finger when I grab the phone, so that unlocking the phone with my fingerprint is quick and effortless. Much easier and quicker than face recognition!
So you don't find it hard to read the fingerprint reader? You get the phone unlocking pretty easily whenever you do? This really depends on personal experience; especially how big your hands are and how you hold your phone.
Many people say they got used to it, some absolutely hate it, some really like it but those are definitely in the minority, from what I've heard. I have an S8 which is comparatively small and small hands, so I tend to grip the phone a bit higher, and it works really well for me.
I'd suggest that you test it out in person. But if this is the only issue keeping you from buying it, I'd say buy even if it seems a bit impractical at first, and give it a week to see if you get used to it; return it if you don't.
No, it's perfectly positioned under my index finger when I pick up my phone. Quickest, easiest unlock ever. Pixel software is too bland and empty for me. You have to find apps on the playstore to do most simple things, that ruins the UX for me having to rely on third party devs to create a consistent experience.
I have had extremely rough experiences with Samsung in the past. Can anyone share their experience with Oreo? Are security patches something to worry about? If there are major bugs, does Samsung do a good job taking care of them?
I'm strongly considering the S9 as my next phone Had the S6 and then the S7 edge. The S7 was definitely a huge step up from that S6 in terms of performance and battery life. With that said, I'm now using the Pixel 2 and will never even consider a Samsung again.
Samsung definitely makes great hardware but lets not kid ourselves about its improvement in smoothness anymore. The Pixel's software is delightfully fluid and the camera is great, but it's missing a lot of features that I loved on the Note.
Plus, I really don't want to be without a headphone jack. Don't worry about the software, we have treble - just import the international exynos model. It's not like you will have warranty after flashing, so you aren't losing out on much if you import.
I hope they will finally use exynos in some CDMA regions this year, I think the patents have expired. I had the S2 but I wasn't much into tech and related news at that time. Can you please explain what you meant by "will properly make them different from the others for the first time since the S2"?
Off the top of my head response: The S2 and its competitor's were the first generation of dual core phones, and Samsung's processor was substantially ahead of the competition from Qualcomm, nVidia and Texas Instruments.
Enjoy the boned software and they will enjoy the fully featured samsung experience. Yes a bit slow but you can easily change animation speed and it will work as intended.
Yes, it's not features rich like samsung experience 9. I can't mention all of them but Google it. You can play music to your earphones and play YouTube to your speaker. You can use earphones and when the phone detects a screaming baby it will warn you good for those with babies.
The superior multi window. The best display in Android. Multi accounts for apps. Hiding navbar and using gestures or 3d home button. And so much more man. It's not speed, it's jank. My note 8 has more features than my pixel 2 xl, but I haven't touched the note in a month.
My co-workers never had a crash or hangups on their note 8 or note 5. And btw my note 3 for 4 years never had a single crash more than twice a year when surfing a high demanding app.
I was talking about performance. The Samsungs are great hardware wise and I love the look of the galaxy S8. I would hope someone could objectively review the S9 when it comes out and give a definitive 'yes' or 'no' to the question of whether or not the UI is laggy compared with phones with cleaner skins such as Pixel, Moto, OnePlus, etc.
Then the end user installs apps from the store and the lag begins. My S8 still feels like new, better even thanks to Oreo optimisations, though I am usually not too heavy on the 3rd party apps and add a lot of em to Samsung's "always sleep" list kinda like a built-in Greenify if I'm not mistaken.
I think it's difficult to be objective about that, because people's perception if "lag" or "smoothness" is different from one another. Nowadays, you don't really get lag in that it really stutters or apps open or switch super slowly, it's more of a general perception of whether or not the interface is smooth.
And yet you'll find many Samsung users saying that their phone is just as smooth as a Pixel. I'm one of those people who doesn't notice any difference, even after pretty direct comparison.
But then I found the option in the developer settings that let's you see the frame rate while you're using the phone, and it turns out: I just don't see it. So when people say there's no difference, it's not that they're shilling for Samsung or whatever, most likely they don't perceive the difference, while others do.
I'd always recommend just testing it out in person yourself in order to make a judgment. I very much prefer the bezels on the iPhone X. Rather have a slight bezel top and bottom and almost no side bezel over the black ring and notch on the iPX.
And yes, i think the essential notch looks ugly too for that matter. The size of the status bar disturbs me on the essential phone. I don't hate it's design as much as the ipx Since it's just smaller and symmetrical but damn does it cause some things to be forced to happen.
You can interact with the navbar and it can hide itself. Equating literal screen with bezel is disingenuous at best. The notch provides no such function. Yes, hard press the home button it's physically there under screen and swipe left for recents, right for back.
You can also use edge gestures. I like it a lot for being able to navigate my phone without bringing my fingers to the top or bottom edges of the screen. Gestures work completely fine on the 8 series you don't ever need your Nav bar but for double tapping the all apps twice for quick switch.
Not a fan of the big side bezels it makes the phone a little bit wider to hold than its supposed to be. What do you think this is, some sort of forum of open discussion? I think the X is a beautiful phone and it's fine that it's out of my pricerange.
I don't understand the hate. Getting downvoted into oblivion just for having a different opinion smh. That's true but it varies a lot from sub to sub and lots of subreddits welcome differing opinions.
The reason I dont like it is because on videos, its not symmetrical and it annoys the heck out of me, on portrate mode its fine. Also I dont like the limited space on the notification panel. I'm not even an Android fanboy and would have highly considered an X if it weren't for that notch.
Probably going with the 7 or 8 now. I've had Android since the Galaxy S4 and want to see if the iPhone is stall all hype and good marketing. Like I said in a previous comment, the notch gives the phone a striking look.
