You can tell by the album art at the top of the playlist that fully extends to the sides, as opposed to a small square album cover at the top. Not only were these available, but they had plenty of added info, meticulously tagged, and ripped perfectly. I dont even have to be commected to the same network. When my pc and phone are within proximity and both spotify apps are running, they instantly connect. GPM radio is faaar better.
Like at first Spotifys is nice, but then you hear the samey songs all from past 4 years. GPM does a better job and the moods feature is killer. If you like the curated playlists like I did, they recently starting putting interviews into the playlist that you have to keep skipping over and over.
After listening to the same fucking interview for the 9th time I went back to GPM with no regrets. I'm not too well versed on Spotify's music discovery, but they do have a lot of really good curated playlists from artists I enjoy GPM does not, and Spotify makes it a lot easier to share playlists and music with friends which is pretty huge.
Lots of picky audiophile types will tell you GPM's files have weird speks and overall sound odd, but I personally think they always sound perfectly fine.
I'd say the two are pretty much evenly stacked, and unless you're super heavily into the best audio quality it doesnt matter. GPM is neat because it lets me upload all my own music to their servers, then download them in playlists.
Spotify does something similar, but you can't listen to your local music on your phone unless you sync it over LAN ahead of time not a great look for me. The app is okay for GPM, I guess.
I have like a few small gripes with it, but I never really considered it to be the worst thing in the world; it could just be better. I haven't used Spotify in a couple years now, so I dunno about it.
Spotify has a follow system where you follow an artist and you get notifications when the artist has a new release. It works a lot better than GPM for sure. Overall, GPM suits my needs perfectly, but spotify seems more consistently good for people who just wanna stream and follow music.
I'd just do a free trial for a few weeks and see what you think. The big pro of GPM over Spotify is it doesn't have a song cap. Spotify doesn't let you add anything more to your library once you hit 10k songs.
If you're chiefly a playlist listener then it will probably never affect you, but if you like adding whole albums to your library you're going to hit this cap a lot quicker than you'd think!
Maybe it's just me but I don't find value in streaming services. I once tried Spotify, I pointed it to my local library but the service didn't generate suggestions based on my local files, trying to shove me generic pop instead.
I tried listening by genre and trying to steer the algorithm by rating tracks but I only got the more popular albums I had already listened, or albums from completely different metal genres.
Why would you call your service unlimited and limit my music collection size? I like to add tracks I really love to one playlist and taking into account that I listen to music in 3 languages just tracks is almost nothing.
Google play music also limits playlist size but it's 10K tracks which is more reasonable. Ohhh boy, I miss Rdio days. That was really ideal music streaming platform.
GPM because it took too long for Spotify to support Chromecast. Yeah, I know they do now, but I'm already pretty deep into Google Music. I'm using GPM now after using Spotify for almost 9 years, because the Spotify paired with Chromecast has been completely useless for me and my SO the last 6 months or so.
Also the desktop app is atrocious. GPM is a garbage app that hasn't changed at all since like Spotify is a company exclusively dedicated to Music, while GPM is just Google's attempt at filling the music hole in their ecosystem just like every other tech company.

I don't experience any of those issues you listed with GPM on Spotify. In terms of discovery, it's pretty good. You get a daily playlist based on songs and artists and genres it knows you like, which generally has a good mix of songs you already like, and songs you haven't heard but will like.
Discover Weekly is another playlist it makes tailored to you, but with new songs that you haven't heard before. It's generally pretty great. Google's upload feature is better.
You can put your own files on Spotify but its not as well integrated as Google's and it's a bit of a faff. Offline availability is fine, although you cannot make a radio station available offline like you can with Google I think you can on GPM right?
Everything else is OK though. Spotify generally notifies me of new albums I might like, either by artists it knows I like, or ones I haven't discovered yet. You can also get great deals on premium every so often: I paid 99p for 3 months a few months ago, even though I wasn't a new customer.
Also, GPM isn't really available here. I like Google Play Music. I've tried switching to Spotify before, but it just won't click with me. I don't like the way it handles queues, and ofc I need to be able to upload my own music.
Spotify is super super good. I have an example for how scary good their discover weekly playlist is. I switched to another new account. I switched all my music over except I deleted songs I had grown tired of.
On the new account the first week I got my discover weekly playlist, it consisted of almost all the songs I had deleted! These were different artists too than that were in my old library.
This shows how good they can predict your music taste. This might seem like a bold suggestion here, but I remember Apple music being my favorite for music discovery among GPM and Spotify.
The radio playlists based on songs I like would play artists I've never been introduced to before but immediately became new favorites. And it seemed like I was finding new music I liked at a record pace.

My major problem with other music streaming sites like GPM or Tidal is that skipping to the next song site took a couple seconds whereas Spotify skipping is instant. It's a small thing but it's a huge gripe I have because the convenience of Spotify is just too great compared to GPM.
There are a few different Spotify playlists that are curated by Spotify for new music, such as "New Music Friday", this is just a mass album made by Spotify of New Music updated every Friday. There also is Discover Weekly and Release Radar there may be others, but these are the two that work best for me, Discover Weekly is a playlist of 30 songs, updated every Monday I believe that the algorithm believes that you would like based on your listening for the last week, you are then able to thumbs up or thumbs down this depending and more recommendations similar or dissimilar will make it into the playlist in the following weeks.
Release Radar works on a similar premise, for example you this year have been listening to Artist X pretty consistently, this week Artist X releases a new song, Release Radar would then have that song in it the coming week.
It also fills up with songs similar to that you are listening to like Discover Weekly, however these songs are released within the last week. I personally have had no issues with Spotify, with a premium subscription you are able to change the sound quality you stream and download playlists in, I just have mine set to normal and everything sounds fine.
Spotify has this too, you are able to download up to 8, songs on 3 devices. If you attempt to download songs on a 4th device, the next time the 1st device comes back online it's downloaded songs will be automatically undownloaded.
I'm generally happy with GPM's app, no real issues. I personally find that Spotify's app is so much simpler and easier to navigate than Google Play Music although I don't delve into the Google Play Music app much anymore, but from what I can see it's pretty similar from when I last used it.
However at the end of the day they both play music, I just prefer the design of Spotifys app. Hands down I prefer Spotify for music listening, for a few reasons, the Discover Weekly and Release Radar is so much better than Google Play Music's alternatives, I love the end of year statistics Spotify gives Wrapped, and the biggest thing for me is Spotify Connect, and apps.
From my laptop I am able to hit the Spotify Connect button, as of right now I can see: From any of those devices I can remotely control music on another, or change where the music is playing from to another.
This is a god send in the instance of listening to music on my Google Home, I am able to then use the media keys on my MacBook to skip through tracks. Along with those there is also a web player. That was one gripe I had with GPM that pushed me to switch was I liked having a native music player instead of a web browser especially because GPM only seems to play nicely with Google Chrome.
Forgot to mention one big thing for me, unless I haven't been able to work it out, Spotify doesn't support uploading your own music and listening to it on another device, I can listen to a song I have saved on my computer in Spotify on my computer and add it to playlists but it does not show up on other devices.

Your ability to listen out a sick HiFi audiophile setup from FLAK tracks doesn't exist though tbh, I don't think google play does this either. But if you are primarily interested in listening to music in a more standard fashion, Spotify kills the competition.
They tend to do a great job with music discovery - I love the special playlists they release every week for you like Discover Weekly and Release Radar. They are almost always on point with my taste in music once it learns what your tastes are.
I've never had trouble finding artists either. The app finally feels pretty smooth and intuitive to use. There's also just a ton of little features that are "Oh that's smart" in terms of what you'd want out of a music service.
My only quirk with Spotify is the radio feature is not nearly as good as Pandora, even though last I checked Spotify had a much bigger library. They recently introduced the ability to upvote and downvote music, but sadly because I listen to radio at work primarily through a Sonos, I don't have that capability.

It's not even in the 30 or so results in "Album". I can't find it except by going in "John Williams" and searching among all albums. The app is in English, but if I type "un nouve" for "Un nouvel espoir" the French title, it pops first.

Agree with everything else. Gpm user here, I had downloaded Spotify for my PC and was using it to try and listen to music on my computer and I had put in 2 of the albums I liked onto a playlist then I went to suggested music and was able to replicate my entire playlist within minutes with there suggested.
Plus, Spotify has a better music library for me, especially the songs that no one knows but, well, it's there. I really liked Spotify and for me, all you need is there.
You could use a trial to see if you like the service. I have tried them all except for Apple Music. My simple requirements are a good "what's new" section every Friday, and a view that let's me see the latest things I downloaded, from latest to earliest.
I don't do a whole lot of searching through lists, and I use Pandora for radio. They all work, but I felt GPM did it best. I would happily use GPM if they offered a student discount.

Spotify is light years ahead in the discovery department. Discover weekly, daily mixes, release radar, all always on point. Google Family plan if you can get a bunch of ppl willing to pay under your account.

The only thing I really care about is the ability to upload music. GPM is leagues ahead of Spotify in this regard. I like a lot of music that's not on any streaming services, the only way I can listen to them along with a streaming service is to upload to GPM.

For me the greatest GPM feature not offered by Spotify is the ability to add music I already own to my online library. Also, Spotify has an inexplicably low limit of songs that I can save to my Spotify library 10, which I find irksome.
Whichever device I'm accessing the service on picks up where the last one left off. If I'm listening to music in the car, when I get home I can immediately carry on in the house. If I have music on while I take a shower, I can continue listening on my Echo in the kitchen when I get downstairs.
This continuity of service across multiple devices is just too convenient to me to forgo. I find Spotify music discovery way better than GPM. Therefore I wish I could commit to Spotify, but their web player is pretty flakey on my work computer.
And I'm not allowed to install the program. Because GPM works perfectly from my work browser it means I'm kind of stuck with them. Another thing that makes me want to use Spotify is that I can't get over the fact that I'm not getting my money's worth because YouTube Red is not available in my country.
Apple Music has the best library but yeah in terms of UI etc, go try them all out. Trials exist and even without them it isn't that expensive for what you get. Spotify has a better service but gpm has better features and allows you to upload your own content.
That being said, gpm has a lot of quirks to deal with. Like this weekend, 2 or the albums I have in my library by Queen just stopped working or have disappeared altogether.
Can someone tell me why there is no "download all" button on GPM? This makes me so mad that I can't download all my songs without it being a hassle. I travel alot so I like to have my whole library offline.
I'm using Apple Music on my Android phone and while it sucked at launch, currently it's amazing in my opinion. But i switched to Spotfiy because GPM felt too clunky and navigation was nightmare but moreover the prepared playlists were all the same and I feel lucky playlist was repetitive too.
And the daily mixes are pretty good too imo. Mainly the cross-device support draws me towards Spotify. I don't like Spotify. GPM much better for discovery. GPM is more intuitive with offline availability.
It automatically caches songs for offline that it thinks you might like. Spotify will automatically cache songs if the playlists you're saving offline are updated, which is interesting. Primary advantage, in my opinion, with GPM is that it is baked into Android.
You can disable it, but you aren't getting rid of it. You can also set GPM to Low as far as data consumption and get by on a lousy internet connection. Primary advantage of Spotify is endless music, which is something GPM is horrible at.
GPM gives you these miniature playlists of 25 songs. That is the same issue I had with Groove Music. I like endless music, so I prefer Flow, when using Deezer, Thumbprint Radio, when using Pandora, I like what Soundcloud does, although I think that Soundcloud has a long way to go when it comes to recommendations; Soundcloud has a way of repeating its recommendations and basing them too heavily around songs you said you liked, as opposed to your actual listening habits.
I am also experimenting with Trebel, which is better suited for downloading entire albums and caching them for free. But I do not like the way that the service is missing recommendations.
I also hate the fact that the service shows albums that are not available on the service, states that the album is "coming soon". But it is free so I put up with it. There are a lot of options out there for streaming.
You might like Deezer; sound quality is great and it is excellent for recommendations it always recommends one or two albums for me. YouTube Music is interesting as it does an excellent job of recommending stuff if you listen to a lot of music on YouTube.
Only downside is that it forces you to watch videos unless you pay for it. It is 99 cents first three months but I would not pay for it. No real advantage of doing so. You also get to listen to podcasts and actual radio stations as well if you are completely bored and aren't sure what to listen to.
I use GPM because Spotify doesnt keep your added song in their generated playlists when you just want it in there. You'll have the save the playlist and then add it to playlist instead of Queue.
When you add it through queue it disappears after it plays once so no playlist on repeat. I listen to a ton of music and like GPM however I will say one thing I'm really jealous of right now: Spotify users' ability to see their year in music.

My goal in moving to GPM was to get my family on one service instead of paying for several. GPM seemed like a good middle ground and Youtube Red was a bonus. The remainder was obscure stuff EDM, trance, atmo and I don't miss it that much.
The Android app is a mess, but it's functional. Like all music players, they are a little too hung up on the design language of the month and showing artwork rather than being usable when and where people listen to music.
Navigation is a mess of swipes and tiny buttons--almost impossible to use when driving and annoying when I'm on a train and trying to multitask. Fortunately, the web player and music search is nice.
Nearly every artist I listen to is available. I build my playlists on my laptop and they are magically synced to my phone. Spotify has better UX of both mobile and desktop.
I seem to like it all around more than Google Play Music. I do use GPM for persona storage of music though. So it's the best of both worlds. It's a great system and we can play even at the same time you just get a message saying can't play, which you can close out of.
If I was on my own I'd get Spotify. It has integration on chromecast devices now, a nice black theme, sharing capability with your added friends, and most of the gripes you have with GPM are fixed such as featured artists.
Why isn't under pressure listed as queen and David Bowie??? If that weren't the case I'd still be using it. Spotify has an "extreme" setting for quality, and I think it might be a little better than Google at "High".
That being said, Spotify has some real deal killers. Spotify limits you on how many songs can be downloaded and how many devices you can have. It is something like 10k songs over 3 devices.
But if you only use one device, you are still limited to 3, downloads as opposed to your full 10k. Spotify UI is just much nicer to me. GPM just doesn't feel like it flows. It's clunky and annoying.
The OnePlus Dash Charger is absolutely incredible, taking the phone to full charge in under an hour. The ability to get a decent amount of charge in a short time is great, especially when on the go and stumbling across an open outlet.
A lot of features seen on flagships are here as well. The physical home button is gone, but it feels like a worthy tradeoff. The phone also has a fingerprint reader, located on the back panel about two-thirds of the way up the phone.
Both the fingerprint and face unlocks are incredibly fast as well, making the phone feel light and responsive. The camera is more than enough to take stunning pictures, and the video it takes is incredibly good, especially if you want to edit or color correct the footage in post.
The portrait mode has some issues defining the outlines of people or objects, making the effect not look as sharp as it does on other phones. OnePlus has a solid phone on its hands. Despite being almost half the price, it keeps up with the latest flagships, even beating them in certain areas.

Every year, the school has fortunately reached its goal for fundraising. Unfortunately, it has never gone significantly over that goal. Students in other schools organize multiple events, such as food fundraisers, dances, competitions, and parades to fundraise for Mini-THON.
They have impeccable participation. However, the main event has always ended up being a great success. That means sharing your donor drive page on Facebook, Twitter, text, anything to get the word out!
This year, the school is striving to raise more money than the stated goal and trying to advertise as much as possible to inspire students to attend every event. Currently, more events are being organized to fundraise for Mini-THON, so please stay updated with the upcoming events.

Despite the shutdown, the users were not deterred. Internet piracy is like a hydra; cut off one head and more will pop up. The main thing that separated What. While OiNK invites were easily available, and people joined just to get free albums, the users of What.
Without an invite, the only other way to get in was an IRC internet relay chat interview about ripping, encoding and categorizing music. Prospective users were asked questions about themselves, other sites they were a member of, and about audio formats and transcoding.
Audio related questions covered everything from what files could be transcoded without losing quality, to ripping different quality MP3s, CBR vs VBR, to analyzing spectrals of audio files to see if it was transcoded incorrectly.
It took about 30 minutes to an hour to complete, and depending on the size of the queue, it could take days to even get into an interview. At that point, anyone who got in had motivation to contribute to the site and follow the rules.
People who just wanted the latest Taylor Swift or Kanye album had left long ago. All that was left was enthusiasts willing to build one of the most complete and well organized collections of music in the world.

Collages, related artist webs, release info, ripping guides, and more were gone. The story of What. Is piracy okay for the sake of preservation and availability? Plenty of albums on What.
Most of the torrents on What. One of the more notable examples of this was the Phish community on What. Phish is a jam band that does a lot of improvisation on stage, so each concert was a unique experience.
Plenty of bands had similar concert bootlegs uploaded, or demo tapes that might never be heard again without the site. The request system also drove the ripping and archiving of releases that had yet to be uploaded.
Users could put some of their upload up as a bounty, and other users could claim the upload by finding the requested record and uploading it. Plenty of requests were filled every day, expanding the already massive collection What.
Some of the biggest bounties had driven incredible uploads, for example scans of a collection of three stories by J. The stories had a bounty of over six terabytes, due to the fact one of them is under lock and key at Princeton, and the other two are similarly secured at the University of Texas.
Salinger stories were removed to protect the site from the massive media attention, plenty of rare and long sought after releases were finally unearthed by people looking to claim these bounties.
Another important reason is format availability. Vinyl rips make that possible. They can either drop a lot of money on a vinyl ripping setup, or download from someone with a top of the line system already experienced in doing so.
Along with the vinyl problem, even albums bought legitimately on many digital marketplaces may not be in the desired format. Anyone interested in transcoding for other devices or archiving the media for preservational purposes would want lossless files, which most services will not provide.
Spotify and iTunes hold their ground by providing the popular tracks that most people want to hear, like a new Kanye or Taylor Swift album. Plenty of albums will be lost to time due to not being carried on digital distribution sites, which could be prevented with an archival site like What.

It might not be a feature you care about but I love the social aspect of Spotify. I can see what friends are listening to and view there playlists and whatnot. That's the biggest thing keeping me from switching to gpm.

Like every time I open the app, all the playlist covers are blank and take a second to load; even if I switch to another app for a moment and return to GPM without it reloading, the art is often gone.
Spotify is light years ahead in the discovery department. Discover weekly, daily mixes, release radar, all always on point. Google Family plan if you can get a bunch of ppl willing to pay under your account.
It has the best value if you can grab like others. I don't have extensive use with Spotify since i pay so little for GPM, but the music selection at least electronic music wise is about the same.
Personally love spotify way mare and use it. Wife loves google play. I hate that google will only allow u to have your account on 5 phones and not ideal for ppl who play with roms. The only thing I really care about is the ability to upload music.
GPM is leagues ahead of Spotify in this regard. I like a lot of music that's not on any streaming services, the only way I can listen to them along with a streaming service is to upload to GPM.
Spotify can't do this, and for that reason, it's out. I've used Spotify premium for a few years but have twice used GPM on 'free for four months trials'. On neither occasion have I decided to jump ship.
For me the greatest GPM feature not offered by Spotify is the ability to add music I already own to my online library. Also, Spotify has an inexplicably low limit of songs that I can save to my Spotify library 10, which I find irksome.
Whichever device I'm accessing the service on picks up where the last one left off. If I'm listening to music in the car, when I get home I can immediately carry on in the house. If I have music on while I take a shower, I can continue listening on my Echo in the kitchen when I get downstairs.
This continuity of service across multiple devices is just too convenient to me to forgo. I find Spotify music discovery way better than GPM. Therefore I wish I could commit to Spotify, but their web player is pretty flakey on my work computer.
And I'm not allowed to install the program. Because GPM works perfectly from my work browser it means I'm kind of stuck with them. Another thing that makes me want to use Spotify is that I can't get over the fact that I'm not getting my money's worth because YouTube Red is not available in my country.
Apple Music has the best library but yeah in terms of UI etc, go try them all out. Trials exist and even without them it isn't that expensive for what you get. Spotify has a better service but gpm has better features and allows you to upload your own content.
That being said, gpm has a lot of quirks to deal with. Like this weekend, 2 or the albums I have in my library by Queen just stopped working or have disappeared altogether.
Can someone tell me why there is no "download all" button on GPM? This makes me so mad that I can't download all my songs without it being a hassle. I travel alot so I like to have my whole library offline.
I'm using Apple Music on my Android phone and while it sucked at launch, currently it's amazing in my opinion. But i switched to Spotfiy because GPM felt too clunky and navigation was nightmare but moreover the prepared playlists were all the same and I feel lucky playlist was repetitive too.
And the daily mixes are pretty good too imo. Mainly the cross-device support draws me towards Spotify. I don't like Spotify. GPM much better for discovery. GPM is more intuitive with offline availability.
It automatically caches songs for offline that it thinks you might like. Spotify will automatically cache songs if the playlists you're saving offline are updated, which is interesting. Primary advantage, in my opinion, with GPM is that it is baked into Android.
You can disable it, but you aren't getting rid of it. You can also set GPM to Low as far as data consumption and get by on a lousy internet connection. Primary advantage of Spotify is endless music, which is something GPM is horrible at.
GPM gives you these miniature playlists of 25 songs. That is the same issue I had with Groove Music. I like endless music, so I prefer Flow, when using Deezer, Thumbprint Radio, when using Pandora, I like what Soundcloud does, although I think that Soundcloud has a long way to go when it comes to recommendations; Soundcloud has a way of repeating its recommendations and basing them too heavily around songs you said you liked, as opposed to your actual listening habits.
I am also experimenting with Trebel, which is better suited for downloading entire albums and caching them for free. But I do not like the way that the service is missing recommendations.
I also hate the fact that the service shows albums that are not available on the service, states that the album is "coming soon". But it is free so I put up with it. There are a lot of options out there for streaming.
You might like Deezer; sound quality is great and it is excellent for recommendations it always recommends one or two albums for me. YouTube Music is interesting as it does an excellent job of recommending stuff if you listen to a lot of music on YouTube.
Only downside is that it forces you to watch videos unless you pay for it. It is 99 cents first three months but I would not pay for it. No real advantage of doing so. You also get to listen to podcasts and actual radio stations as well if you are completely bored and aren't sure what to listen to.
I use GPM because Spotify doesnt keep your added song in their generated playlists when you just want it in there. You'll have the save the playlist and then add it to playlist instead of Queue.
When you add it through queue it disappears after it plays once so no playlist on repeat. I listen to a ton of music and like GPM however I will say one thing I'm really jealous of right now: Spotify users' ability to see their year in music.
I want to see who I listened to most, what songs I steamed the most, and I can't: Spotify makes it nearly impossible to export playlists. It's just a dick move to help lock-in. I don't use them because of that.
I had a premium subscription to Spotify a few years ago as a work perk. At the time, it wasn't compelling enough to move me off Pandora. My goal in moving to GPM was to get my family on one service instead of paying for several.
GPM seemed like a good middle ground and Youtube Red was a bonus. The remainder was obscure stuff EDM, trance, atmo and I don't miss it that much. The Android app is a mess, but it's functional.
Like all music players, they are a little too hung up on the design language of the month and showing artwork rather than being usable when and where people listen to music. Navigation is a mess of swipes and tiny buttons--almost impossible to use when driving and annoying when I'm on a train and trying to multitask.
Fortunately, the web player and music search is nice. Nearly every artist I listen to is available. I build my playlists on my laptop and they are magically synced to my phone. Spotify has better UX of both mobile and desktop.
I seem to like it all around more than Google Play Music. I do use GPM for persona storage of music though. So it's the best of both worlds. It's a great system and we can play even at the same time you just get a message saying can't play, which you can close out of.
If I was on my own I'd get Spotify. It has integration on chromecast devices now, a nice black theme, sharing capability with your added friends, and most of the gripes you have with GPM are fixed such as featured artists.
Why isn't under pressure listed as queen and David Bowie??? If that weren't the case I'd still be using it. Spotify has an "extreme" setting for quality, and I think it might be a little better than Google at "High".
That being said, Spotify has some real deal killers. Spotify limits you on how many songs can be downloaded and how many devices you can have. It is something like 10k songs over 3 devices.
But if you only use one device, you are still limited to 3, downloads as opposed to your full 10k. Spotify UI is just much nicer to me. GPM just doesn't feel like it flows.
It's clunky and annoying. I'll be trying Apple Music now as I have seen it suggested here. I use GPM because I keep getting free trials for months depending on the promo have to make a new gmail sometimes.
I've stuck with GPM largely for one reason, and that's being able to easily upload songs whenever GPM doesn't have it. With Spotify, I feel like I'm basically stuck with what's offered. It doesn't come up often, but often enough that I feel I need that feature.
Spotify's discovery and social features are bitchin, though. Just, again, if the library doesn't include the Jamie XX remix of "You've got the love" and I can't do anything about it, no go.

Music discovery is better w Google. They're ML tech or whatever they use has proven to be really accurate for me at least. Unless they've changed things I always had a terrible time with GPM suggestions.
