The 4K display is at the cutting edge, and those who say "Who needs 4K on a tiny phone? And even if you don't, you'll see details you never saw on other phones. I really like the Galaxy too, but I'd call it a little over-styled.
I like the curved glass edges on the Samsung - yeah, they're cool - but they can also be a source of reflected glare, making edge details hard to see or read. And while some don't like the edge bezels on the Sony, I think they look clean and refined.
I also found that - holding the Samsung - I'm constantly covering up information on the screen edges that I want to see. On the Sony, I do wish that the speaker volume were a little louder, but it is very usable.
I use some Sony headphones I've had for years, and they have a decently high 'sensitivity' rating, about db, which gives a really strong volume for music and videos - it is not the least bit weak.
I can blast my ears off with it. I think some may be using low sensitivity headphones, which can sound great with a lot of power - but they tax the power of weaker headphone outputs.
Try a headphone with good sensitivity, and you'll be happy. The Camera is everything you could ask for in a modern phone - perhaps a half notch below that of the Galaxy. Not perfect, but nothing is - still excellent.
And it does have that ultra-slow fps slow-motion, and the 4K is outstanding. I have no issues with the still camera, the autofocus, and other features. But I have an excellent big camera for when I need true pro features.
No phone is there yet, but they are improving each generation. And the XZ Premium still comes very close in quality to low-level pro cameras, and might actually be overkill for personal use.
Snapdragon is no slouch - neck and neck with the very best! The touch screen is effortlessly smooth and a pleasure to use, gestures interpreted well. So you don't think I'm only positive, here's the mostly minor other side I do hope that Sony will fix a few things in their First firmware update: Do boost the volume, and dispense with the unnecessarily low 'loud limit,' which is too low though you can always override it.
Don't forget the ringer volume or louder ringtones please? Make the Fingerprint Reader work for US customers! What, are we so inferior to Europeans, Brits, and Japanese in your eyes, Sony? Not a deal-breaker, but really??
Give us full control of the Resolution and Audio Settings for the phone, so that we can decide when full resolution - 4K - is important, and when battery life is more important.
I'd take a few more "modern" ringtones, but I can do that myself If you use your phone a LOT, and the display image is important to you, then this is just about the only phone that jumps ahead in resolution - and the other phones WILL be upping theirs perhaps in another generation or two, but the Sony has 4K now The stereo speakers will not knock your socks off or power your Block Party, but they are nice if you want a medium low background sound, and it's in Stereo.
And the audio sounds beautiful and powerful through good, sensitive headphones or most any stereo input. It feels great and solid in your hand, and it can be operated with just one hand, though two is better due to size.
The menus are really not bad at all - just takes a few minutes to get it after 4 iPhones. I'm loving this phone. I just can't stop myself finding reasons to look at everything on the 4K display.
A very few detractions, but still five stars. Comment people found this helpful. We've asked for more information about what's entailed in replacing the top layer, and what sort of test data Motorola has.
Guess we'll have to see what direction they go in post when they drop the mods, but I'm not that hopeful. And never ever replace it, since if it scratches this easily, it would probably also deform easily if you pull something off of it, even if adhesive isn't used.
A piece of plastic to cover another piece of plastic to avoid scratching the plastic that the plastic protector is protecting and then charge the customer extra for the privilege Its the most-financialy rewarding I've had..
I prefer no screen protector at all now. This is the first phone I've ever done that with s7e and I'm happy I did. My first thought is how hilarious it is that they are essentially recommending people put a layer of shatter-vulnerable tempered glass on top of shatter-proof plastic so they can prevent it from scratching.
The only issues I have ever experienced with a tempered glass screen protector is the infamous 'halo bubble'. I would say it's more of a "dent" than a scratch the display plastic is deforming, not being physically cut.
But they look like scratches and, arguably, are functionally worse because they cause visual distortions due to their greater depth and width than any scratch.
Would you categorize a scratch as a deformation where the part which is seemingly removed from the physical body? Because a deformation regarding certain things tends to be used to describe a scenario where the item in question has all of its pieces, just not in the intended way.
Of course though, Ryan would need to carefully examine the screen to check if the bit which he seemingly removed is still there or not. I can't prove it, but I'd wager that this new screen is made of inferior plastic, and is cheaper for Moto than last year's screen.
The less they spend in manufacturing, the more profit they make on each phone. I've had such a terrible time with Motorola customer service that I'll never buy one of their products again.
I haven't used a screen protector in years and zero scratches. Put a case on your phone if concerned about the display shattering. They back tracked on scratch resistance to make it "stronger".
All Moto has to do is sell the Moto x with less bezels and todays specs Give the ppl what they want. The Moto X already had the minimum amount of bezel a phone with front facing speakers could have..
A little bit off the top. Used that phone for a while, got distracted by the fact that the top and bottom bezels weren't of even sizes. I'll take the bezels. They don't bother me and give my thumb, fingers and palm somewhere to rest.
I'm with you on this. I don't understand the want to not have any or just minimal bezel. It's just asking for accidental input. I dont want rounded glass like the Galaxy series but I would like right up to the side.
The Note 7 and S8 both have remarkably enhanced palm rejection on the edges. As far as I'm concerned its already good enough. It isn't the bezel that's the problem. Personally, I'm all for a bezel that is used effectively.
Put speakers on there, or capacitive keys Just don't leave it empty At the very least, I larger battery than a competing device with a smaller bezel is a must. If my Moto X had a fingerprint scanner I'd probably still be using it.
Mine had the white front bezel with the bamboo back I'm still using mine and super bummed that as of last night somehow part of my micro USB connector got pushed in to the phone and the cable will just barely stay in to charge the phone if I don't touch it: Bamboo back with black front here.
Nope I'm just running 6. Everything else seems to have some big compromise like the S8 having curved edges and bloated software, the U11 is massive and doesn't have OLED, the G6 has gross looking software and reports of hardware problems like poor phone call audio, the OnePlus 5 has poor customer service, jelly screen, and reports of hardware quality problems I still have a 2nd gen Moto X sitting in a drawer.
Works great and sometimes I power it up and use it as a Play Music device. I still use one as my daily driver. If only it didn't have battery problems I'd probably still be using it in a couple years.
They're still making nightlies of lineage for it. Finally upgraded to Lineage from the stock ROM a week or two ago and boy has it improved the phone. Have to get my hands on a demo to see how it actually compares.
I'm actually on my third battery. It works well enough, but I just thought you'd want to know what you're getting into. Damn, thanks for the warning. Why are you people obsessed with small bezels?
I guess for the same reason you want 4k screens and paper thin phones with no headphone jack. What do bezels have to do with thickness? I wouldn't mind a thicker phone if it has less bezels. Less bezels just means more screen for the amount of phone you have to put in your pocket.
The internet has no room for jokes! Well, except maybe https: I consider this a feature, and the way all phones should come. So do what you do with a traditional screen; add a screen protector.
The screen won't crack when dropped, but if screen protector gets messed up, you peal it off and put another one on. You might already have a screen full of scratches by the time the protector arrives.
So jump through hoops to protect your unbreakable screen. I will add not everyone likes a screen protector. They only last a week or two before touch sensitivity diminishes, but undoubtedly deal with it for weeks more until we get around to ordering another.
It's odd that this kind of issue is popping up now? I'm amazed that Lenovo didn't know to prevent such deformation from taking place so easily. Add this to the growing list of manufacturer's flagship phones I'll never buy.
Samsung, LG and maybe Google with their weird resolutions and curved screens and now Moto shattershield phones. I'm running out of phones to buy, lol. Actually what will probably happen is I'll have to settle for mid-range phones that seem to stick to traditional designs rather than the flagships that seem to make changes for the sake of change.
The Moto mods are pretty cool. I don't think I would be discounting all of Moto because of one phone. And probably the next one. Crossing my fingers for a redesign in I have to admit that controller mod has me really tempted to try one out.
It would be so nice with emulators. Why not use a Bluetooth controller like the moga? It's smaller to carry, cheaper, and compatible with everything. Let that thing sit in the car, screen up in the sun for a couple hours.
With all of he give, flex, and the shitty adhesive I am curious to see if it will buckle. I tossed it around, literally tossed it, to show off Moto build quality.
It hits the ground once a week, with no case. It held up for a solid year and a half before a bit of water got into the screen. Now, I understand that premium phones tend to come with more fragile materials, and I would never throw a flagship Samsung around, nor an iPhone, nor a Moto Z.
But if a budget phone in can withstand literal abuse, is it so much to ask that the same company produce a flagship that doesn't scratch if you look at it funny? Seriously it's insane how much bias Android police seems to have against this phone in this and other articles.
As he says he's not reviewing a final production phone. News for the author plastic scratches! AP continually rips on this phone for having a slightly smaller battery than the previous edition iirc, what like three or four hundred milliamp smaller?
They neglect to mention that the Snapdragon uses power more efficiently than previous Editions and batteries may last longer because of that. Another thing I keep seeing from AP is that oh my gosh mods cost extra money more than just the phone and that is evil!
What the hell it is basic to the concept of the phone having mods and being able to buy them. Wake up folks cell phones are changing and in 10 years we won't even have things that look like phones anymore this is one step towards that.
Then don't by the mod and wait for another one to come out. The Hasselblad mod hasn't gotten great reviews personally I'm waiting for the next version..
I think the main downside to this phone is that you can get much better devices for far less money. Then you factor in Motorola's sub-par cameras, the questionable usefulness and longevity of the Mods, the less-than-full day battery specs, Motorola's history of poor updates The thing is, we are not buying looking at the specs.
Motorola always had less specs than the competition look at the first Moto X, Moto etc wich compensated with software optimizations. We are buying the entire Motorola experience wich is really awesome and no other manufacturer can come close.
So no, you can't buy the same for less money. I don't get what's so special about the "Motorola Experience" if part of that includes a crappy camera, laughable battery life, and a lack of updates.
The previous model had a battery that was mAh bigger. No amount of optimization compensates for that. They reduced the battery capacity to make battery mods a necessity.
Having been in the aquarium hobby for years, it's widely known that acrylic aquariums are MUCH stronger and lighter than their glass counterparts. However, the downside is the "scratchability" of acrylic.
If you even slightly rub or hit something against an acrylic aquarium, it'll leave a sizable mark. It seems to me that Lenovo should ship glass screen protectors with these phones. I've seen budget offerings in Europe that come with 2 glass screen protectors in the box, so why couldn't Lenovo do the same?
If only there were a glass product you could apply over the existing screen to prevent scratches and dents.. There's a reason everyone went away from plastic screens. It doesn't matter if you have thick plastic that looks like hell but scratches a little less, or thin plastic that looks a bit better but scratches a lot more I'd still appreciate that the screen can survive the impact the protector couldn't handle.
Blame the dumb people who keep paying whatever it is Apple wants to charge. For whatever reason, people like to blame the companies because it is easier I guess but the reason they are able to do this is because the people keep paying for it.
You would do the same if you were selling a product. Casuals don't know better, they are essentially buying a Lexus body with a Toyota engine. If I didn't know anything about phones I'd get an iPhone too.
And to those people, paying a high price MUST mean it's good. So we're screwed either way. That is a good point. And by all accounts, when you have a closed ecosystem like Apple uses, it is easier to make things run well on lower quality hardware.
Android does not have that luxury, but it is nice to see some companies like OnePlus who are able to make a well running version work as efficiently and smooth as an iphone for a much lower price. Buying a Lexus body with a Toyota engine, then raving about how much better the engine is in their Lexus than the Toyota.
After never breaking a screen, then breaking 3 in one year, I said eff it and bought the Z1 Force. It's sits in my back pocket, no case and I sit on it all the time. I've dropped it 20 or so times, even on the screen No scratches, no dents, nada.
It would be sad if Moto ruined such a good thing. Every phone should have this. It's probably a screen protector covering the display. If it isn't and this is the state of the materials used for the display, shame on Lenovo.
The one thing Lenovo doesn't need is less than stellar rep because the Chinese company is already near the bottom of the pack for a consumer-perceived company. Actually that sort of panel design were carried from X Force And that display isn't even flat, but more of a spherical, like on those old CRT TVs which makes applying a tempered glass protector impossible Wondering is it flat on Z2 Force.
I'm not invested in this Z2 but I feel the need to say that any phone that's worth a damn should have a case on it as well as a screen protector if the case doesn't supply one.
If your using your phone as a status symbol, you're doing it wrong. No one will think more of you bc of your phone. Ok, maybe outside of those 20k Bentley phones. Now this shouldn't happen, I agree.
But preventive measures go a long way. I have no problem using my S8 without a case because it feels infinitely more premium than any of the cases I've purchased for it. Worst case scenario I have insurance, which I haven't had to use on any phone I've used in the past 10 or so years.
To each their own but some people actually take care of their phones and don't mind using them as they were intended. Any phone that's worth a damn shouldn't need a case or screen protector.
If peeps didn't immediately run out and slap on protection Not harping on you as much as I am this 'need' for metal and glass backed phones. It's just a stupid design the bottom bezel is bigger than on the on plus 5 or HTC u11 yet no capacitive buttons that does make no sense at all.
The screen is shatter prove yay but ugly as it scratch prone they should made people choose between this and a bon shatter prove version preferably with 2. You can turn off on-screen buttons and use the fingerprint gestures, I think.
Gives you more screen real estate. If I get a noticeable scratch on the screen, it's as good as broken to me and I'll try to replace the phone asap. Also, the Nexus 6P early shutoff issue has really chapped me off.
After the 6p I went iPhone, there are some serious nagging issues but updates and performance aren't issues. I also know I can actually get it fixed in a reasonable amount of time as well though indont tend to break things.
The OnePlus 5 can be ordered today, tomorrow or anytime. The usual stock problems haven't existed with this model. But there are more flagships than just those 3 in, there's also:. I loved my moto x 1st gen and heard only good things about Moto x 2nd gen, but Motorola has been a deal breaker for me ever since Lenovo took over the company!
That's your opinion but Motorola grew strong with Lenovo and it's still growing. It's selling a lot more than it did under Google. And I am not saying it didn't grow I am saying the quality of their phones is questionable Here are the phones I owned after 1st gen Moto X in no particular order: Moto X Play that broke the screen from a 50cm fall, Moto G 3rd Gen Turbo that had ghost touches and Moto G4, that also broke the screen after being dropped from a small height and also had ghost touches issue There phones have actually improved in quality since the Lenovo buyout.
They went away from using cheap plastics and components in their devices and started using premium materials. People who buy this phone are going to have some jacked up screens.
And from what I have seen the warranty is only if the screen is cracked. If so then all the scratches in the world and Lenovo won't cover it and call it normal wear and tear.
They need to just go back to using a nice screen with glass. The mods are enough when it comes to being different. This phone is not shockproof or designed to withstand all damage from dropping.
All other warranty exclusions, including scratches and other cosmetic damage, intentional damage or abuse, normal wear and tear, and other limitations apply". Without paying for an extended warranty, there aren't many that cover a display for 4 years.
And most of them won't cover normal wear and tear i. No need to change the screen.

Don't forget the ringer volume or louder ringtones please? Make the Fingerprint Reader work for US customers! From what we understand, Motorola changed the design of the ShatterShield screen this year to make it thinner.
Part of that process included bonding the plastic cover to the display. Thus, you can't remove it like you could on the Z Force. So, if it gets massively scratched up, you would need to replace the entire AMOLED panel instead of just a plastic sheet.
The adhesive holding the plastic layer in place seems insufficient, too. Of the two units we've tested, both make a "crinkling" noise when you press in certain places. The plastic appears to be popping up slightly after being pressed down, like the adhesive isn't strong enough to hold it.
The sound is very noticeable around the fingerprint sensor and at the top near the earpiece. I've also noticed the front-facing flash is slightly recessed from the rest of the bezel.
The plastic cover is so soft and flexible that you can press on the flash and actually feel the plastic sink in. It'll stay concave like that for a moment, and then the adhesive fails and the plastic springs back up with a loud click.
I should note, this phone is from the first round of manufacturing. It's possible Motorola will improve the final retail hardware. Maybe the adhesive will hold the plastic cover more firmly to eliminate the clicking sounds?
That would be nice. Although, I doubt the plastic material itself will change, so get ready for scratch city. The question potential buyers have to ask is, "Is an uncrackable screen worth these trade-offs?
Either the scratching or clicking sound would be enough to put me off this device, but perhaps you're a real butterfingers who's always breaking phones. Shatterproof does not mean scratchproof, and scratches can be subjective.
Motorola encourages the use of a third-party screen protector for added scratch resistance. That being said, we will continue to evolve the design for continuous improvement.
The unit you received was one of the very first production units and we do have an improvement in the works that consumers will see shortly after launch. Consumers can get the top liner replaced by contacting the service center at their carrier or Best Buy.
