Use my phone to cast content to the TV? A Roku is so much more convenient. I'm not saying there aren't valid fans of Chromecast, it just makes no sense to me. I bought one, used it once, disconnected, and I have no idea where it is.
All those devices u wish Google to produce comparing to Apple's offerings and yet u want Google to sell them at half or less price than that of Apple's offerings?
Google is trash in the hardware world. They start off usable to great then end up a dumpster fire. Promises after promises broken. Everything always an alpha or beta product. Theyre a company with ADHD.
I would never trust Google to be a part of my smart home. I've been a supporter of all their early products and I've been burned terribly. When it comes to my home which is magnitudes more expensive than most tech gadgets and have lifetimes measured in decades I ain't letting Google touch it with them proven track record of abandoning products and short support record.
For the record they haven't pulled shit together. Nest was actually better before Google bought them. The current software is buggy as shit. Much of Google hardware is excellent but not all.
The Google WiFi is the top router sold on Amazon. I'd buy an Apple product. Never have, but I'd consider it. I've used the iPhone 6S Plus and like it very much. Google would have to works some miracles before I'd ever buy another product from them.
Chromecast was my first and last Google hardware product. I admit the Pixel Chromebook looks fantastic, but I would never spend that kind of money for it. So I'll never know if it's as good as it seems.
If Google would put some afford in Almost everything outside America then maybe, just maybe the title would be true. Don't use Chromecast, Google WiFi.
Have not bought into the Google Home personal assistant stuff. Gave up on Project Fi. One area I believe Google is lacking is in the budget and mid-range smartphone market. I have the current Moto Android One X4.
Was hoping it would get the love and respect like the Nexus and Pixel's. I preferred to buy Nexus devices for relatives as well, but now I have to go with Moto G's which unfortunately will not get the support that the Nexus line used to get.
Amazon has shown that if you build budget friendly hardware you gain much more market share than going for the high end margin. I really don't understand Google's reasoning here?
Amazon never had a sliver of hope with their Fire Phones. They never gained any market share. They were complete crap even for a budget phone. The original Amazon Fire phones were not budget phones.
The original price was high, they only discounted it after they saw it was not selling. Their biggest mistake with the phone was adding all that unnecessary 3D or 4D whatever they called it, coupled with their custom OS.
They are selling the Moto G phones with ads, pretty well. Which proves my point exactly, as a budget phone they were complete garbage let alone originally being a high-end flagship smartphone. Everything was wrong about it.
Amazon's messed up version of Android was wrong on every level. When i was in best buy, all the echo devices were sold out. Yet i saw mountains of Google Home and Home Mini boxes being ignored. I was in a different Best Buy yesterday and I watched someone take the last Mini off shelf, leaving the Home and Chromecast displays bare.
But it sounds like what's been reported before the holiday was about approx 75 to 25 breakdown https: And at the Best Buy in the Mall of America on Black Friday, multiple displays of the Home Mini were empty and I saw at least 10 people in line with one, all while the Echo Dot was in a bin at the checkout line and only one person had one Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean anything in this context.
Well I was at Home Mini and all of the Best Buy's were sold out while all of the echo devices were being ignored. Before they can become important in the world they need to actually sell products in the world.
Selling mostly to the UK and US isn't exactly the world. There is another Countries and a lot of them can buy the entire Samsung and Apple range of products. I love Androidpolice but I hate when outlets say something is important in the US it counts as the world while ignoring to other Countries.
Maybe "is poised to become They have a few products, some of which are quite good admittedly, but none that really own their market space. Frankly, if Google were to completely quit making all hardware tomorrow, there is nothing that couldn't be easily replaced with an equivalent product and 2-day shipping from Amazon Prime.
Top seller on Amazon and an excellent product. Google understands the value of the data and would be the last company to sell it. They will target ads using it and I am fine with that.
You might not and respect that. Also Google is going to do a better job securing it than anyone else. David, please replace the word "world" with "USA". Most countries globally do not officially get any Google-specific products mine included, unless through a third-party importer.
That means additional markup and zero support. So to postulate how important Google's ecosystem is on a global scale is well Ironically, the very company you US-centric media sites continually disregard, Samsung, actually do offer a vast majority of their products globally.
I'm much more likely to have an ecosystem built up with interconnected Samsung devices, than Google ones. After they removed the install counts for their Pixel-only apps I am not convinced of any success for the Pixel line.
So they give this task to David but didn't bother to disclose anywhere at the site to the readers. Not only built by, but also designed by under Google supervision, of course the OEMs.
Even Apple understands that cheap phones sell better. Now you can have an iphone for bucks. Why Google had to kill Nexus line? Google creates great things and then destroys them with own hands.
I think Google needs a shrink three times a week asap, because what Google does is self-destructive. Neither was the Nexus line produced by Google. Only software was Google as is with the AndroidOne line.
Are you a child? Google does not produce Pixel line as well. Your argument is for the sake of an argument. Don't you have people to talk to instead of nitpicking here?
It's so cute of u to ask if I'm a child because ur so incompetent to have any sort of discussion without throwing some tantrum as if ur a child urself with ur responses.
Also, Patrick above mentioned an alternative to the Nexus line within AndroidOne which u refuted by commenting that it's not produced by Google. Neither Nexus nor Android were produced by Google.
Ur response to Patrick is redundantly stupid. Same as Apple's and Foxcon's relationship with eachother. If Google saves all its energy into making Android TV a thing, and instead focusing on branching out from the success of the Chromecast, it would have own the living room now.
Google's motto always seems to be "Oh, we make this successful product. Now, let's make a totally new product that is similar to this product but slightly different. It must be a really great idea!
Get a job at Google and pitch ur ideas to them as u seem to think that the more qualified engineers they have, don't know what their doing. Google makes crap, plain and simple. Reminds me of the 60s when a transistor radio would say "Made in Hong Kong".
You just new it was junk. You guys forgot tensor processing unit. It is the start of a proprietary hardware race, and probably in a few years everyone will be indirectly using something like it.
Except there are a ton of people having hardware issues on their Pixel phones. Some we're lucky enough to have this happen before the short one year warranty expired. Some not so lucky Google has offered no other solution thus far besides a shrug of the shoulder and "too bad it didn't break earlier".
WTF are u smoking? On my third Google phone. I'm not doing this anymore. This N6P was the last straw. Two bootloops of death and one bad battery replacements. I will not touch another Google device until they prove they learned something about quality control.
I am surprised Google has not used "Chrome Home" as the main branding name. All of this hardware is simply newest version of the algorithmic behavioral modification tools smartphones, etc we've all been conditioned to believe we can't live without.
Opening the article with Chromecast illustrated just how unlike Chromecast everything since has been. Home is struggling, and Nest has been a disaster. And putting it all together this year into a very controversial and still way overpriced phone.
Google still has an identity crisis, and seems determined to compete with every major tech company whether they actually have a good idea or not. Not sure how you can call them such an important hardware company, they clearly still have major quality control issues to work out.
Proper multi-device support [without needing to have the phone doing all the work] Can't be all that hard Google's various hardware options have their flaws some more than others and annoyances But over all I've been pleased with what they've put out.
And I'm looking forward to what might bring I seem to be one of my circle's resident techie s and am occasionally asked to recommend new devices. When I'm asked, I mainly recommend Google products.
Not only for the hardware but because they are guaranteed to get timely updates. However there is one issue that I would like to see Google potentially address at some point in the near future.
That being not everyone needs or can afford premium high end top shelf hardware. Most other OEMs have multiple tiers they sell devices at. Motorola has the Z, X G and E lines.
Samsung offers Galaxy S and J phones, etc I would like to see Google expand their offerings, and while maintaining the premium Pixel, maybe bring back the Nexus brand for a mid-range device and launch a Go brand for the lower level devices While few seem interested in high end tablets anymore, Amazon still seems to be doing well selling their lower end Fire tablets.
They just want to lock people into their ecosystem to collect info for and to distribute targeted ads Kinda like Amazon really,. You sound like me. Have the pixel 2 XL and best smartphone I have had.
Been very happy with our Google WiFi and Google homes. We have historically been an Apple hardware house but more and more been buying Google hardware and think that will probably continue.
Tried to pick up a Pixel book last week for Christmas but sold out at Best buy ;. They sell online in their webpage, so I ask, how many years is going to take them to sell directly to south america??
They have offices in my country for servers and ads business, so I ask, is it really that hard to put one or two person for managing warranties localy or if they want, they can send equipment for repairs to the US I mean, I know that at the beggining they are not going to sell a lot, but they have have to start to build a name globally if they want to be considered at the level of apple or samsung I can buy a phone of them even in the smallest city The title is totally wrong.
In Europe there is nothing more than Chromecast. It's a nice device, not an essential one thought. Google has no place there. None of the Google's products are officially available in my country.
Pixel 2 is not available at all, nor official neither unofficial. But we have official Apple, Huawei, Samsung, Sony, etc. Google needs to step up their game in providing better country availability.
This is really exciting. I don't have a pixel because im so clumsy but I do own a host of other Google products and I think they might just pull together a modular whole house system that works as close to seamlessly as it gets.
I just wish I didn't have to have a YouTube red or Google play music subscription just to get the most use out of it. Integrate other music apps, maybe Google doesn't have-every thing! I'm going to add something here.
In order for Google to truly be an important player in the hardware space, they need a more cohesive hardware ecosystem; much, much better distribution channels and much wider footprint; and an ecosystem where the benefits of that interlinked operability is the key selling point.
Their problem is that the hardware is too diverse, and there is zero benefit in me using a Google-only cluster of hardware devices. Compare that to Apple's ecosystem which is much more inclusive, while properly allowing third parties to integrate and that is how an important hardware company looks and operates.

The PVC is also five times more powerful than the Apple bionic chip. The Note 8 is confirmed to include Gigabit LTE capability, whereas the other Samsung devices are receiving that feature as an over-the-air carrier update in the coming months.
Additionally, the global unlocked version of the Samsung devices use a different baseband processor and also a different CPU the Exynos 9 in order to be compatible with different mobile networks in other countries.
On an iPhone 7 or newer, you'll need to use the included lightning port adapter with the iPhone to make mini audio jack devices work. That, or you'll want to look into Bluetooth card readers which Square now offers and other similar devices.
While the feature to turn it on can be hard to find in the settings menu, the latest Samsung phones support adaptive sound. Users take a "hearing test" so audio is optimized for each person.
There are also quite a few custom settings on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to make the audio experience via headset quite good. Apple's iPhone X has no fingerprint reader due to the lack of a home button or a rear biometric scanning device.
Conversely, all the Samsung devices have fingerprint readers on the back of the phone near the rear cameras. Fingerprint scanners such as Touch ID use a special area of system storage called a "Secure Enclave," which keeps an encrypted signature of your fingerprint s.
This signature is only accessible by the fingerprint reader and it cannot be faked or substituted when the system requests it. In addition to a six-digit PIN entered on the virtual keypad, iPhone X users can unlock with "Face ID," which is a new feature that allows the front-facing camera to recognize certain biometric features on your face even if you obscure it with sunglasses.
The A11 chip uses hardware acceleration in addition to front-facing "dot projectors" in order to read the biometric profile of your facial geometry. Samsung devices have three biometric methods to unlock -- fingerprint, facial identification, and iris scanning.
Like Face ID, I consider the face identification to be experimental and not a primary authentication mechanism such as a fingerprint reader, so I've classified it as neutral as far as how meaningful it is for business use.
Samsung's face identification is also purely software-based whereas Apple dedicates hardware and sensors to the task. However, based on our testing, the iris scanner on the Note 8 is fast and works well in all conditions except direct sunlight.
Generally speaking, we find it to perform more reliably on the Note 8 than the Galaxy S8 Plus. The smallest of the devices is the iPhone 8, at grams and 4. A similar sized iPhone 7 has a 1,mAh milliamp hour Lithium-Ion battery.
At the higher end of the scale, the g Samsung S8 Active with a 5. While the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus battery capacities have not yet been verified, the devices are very similar in terms of weight and form factor as their iPhone 7 counterparts, so I expect the battery performance to be similar or slightly better 20 percent is typical for an incremental revision in iPhone models.
Somewhere in the 3,mAh to 3,mAh range is probably a conservative estimate. The biggest draw on a battery on a smartphone is the display, and the display technology that is used will impact battery performance.
However, you can turn off the illumination on a LED-backlit LCD, and in decent lighting conditions, you can conserve a lot of battery life that way and can still read the display. Keep in mind that none of these devices listed have field replaceable batteries for a quick swap out, so it's probably a good idea to invest in a 10,mAh or higher portable battery pack.
All the devices listed have wireless charging capabilities. However, not all wireless charging systems are created equal, even if they use the same standard, which is Qi. There are multiple low-power Qi implementations and they are all based on output wattage.
Version 1 is 5 watts, and version 1. Apple's Qi implementation is 7. All the low-power implementations use induction coils, which cannot be more than 5mm away from each other in order to conduct a charge.
Typically, the coils are embedded in a mat or on the casing of the device. While it is possible to increase the distance of the coils, charging speed is reduced. So, ideally, you want your coil on the phone and the coil on the mat to be touching each other.
Apple's own charging mat has not been released yet, so you will have to experiment with third-party products for now. However, accessory compatibility with the new iPhones has not yet been verified.
Additionally, it isn't yet known what impact thick third-party cases will have on coil power transmission effectiveness. If it is anything like the way NFC works, it's probably going to be hit or miss.
The iPhones do have Qi wireless charging at 7. In addition, the Note 8 has rapid wireless charging, so you can actually top off on a charging pad much faster with the Note 8. Samsung advertises wireless fast charging as 1.
Often overlooked on handheld devices is the local filesystem and how it is secured. Android devices have user-accessible file systems, and applications have equal access to that file system and all of the resources on them including each other's data.
Conversely, iOS does not have a user accessible file system and the applications live in their own silos, and out of the box cannot access each other's data. The iOS file system is encrypted by default, whereas the Android user space file system is not, and the SD cards are definitely not encrypted by default either.
Typically, encryption on Android is deployed via mobile device management software and group policies set by an IT administrator. This can be done at the individual device level, the file system level, or at the application level.
In September, Thijs Broenink, a computer science student, suspected a pre-installed app named AnalyticsCore in Xiaomi phones. He also revealed Xiaomi phones having a backdoor allowing installation of any app without user approval.
The veracity of his claims has yet to be verified. The Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission had investigated the flash sales and found that Xiaomi had sold fewer smartphones than advertised.
In those flash sales Xiaomi claimed that the number of smartphone sold was 10, units each for the first two sales, and 8, units for the third one. However, FTC had investigated the claims and found out that Xiaomi only sold 9, devices in the first flash sale, 9, units in the second one, and 7, for the third.

Typically, encryption on Android is deployed via mobile device management software and group policies set by an IT administrator. This can be done at the individual device level, the file system level, or at the application level.
Additionally, each application in iOS has its own encrypted data store. When deployed at the file system level on a vanilla Android system, the device prompts the user for a passcode during the boot-up process, at which time the file system is decrypted.
For the most part, this doesn't add a lot of additional overhead in terms of boot time or overall performance, but it isn't convenient. Samsung devices have an additional layer of optional security, known as KNOX, which is a type of hardware virtualization, isolation, and partitioning technology supported by specific mobile CPUs.
The profile contains information about what apps can and cannot be installed on the device as well as which apps should be isolated and how system processes should behave and resources are accessed.
If you enable KNOX, it will definitely add an additional layer of complexity on the device. You may or may not notice the performance impact depending on what apps you have installed, what you have turned on, and how you use the phone.
Customers should be aware that Samsung devices purchased from any Microsoft store including their online store will have a KNOX profile pre-installed and it cannot be removed. With the array of choices on the market, determining which smartphone to purchase can be one of the most difficult choices for an enterprise or business customer.
Each device needs to be judged on its own merits, not just by raw specifications. While each iPhone and Samsung Galaxy model is more than adequate to fulfill the needs of a base-line use case, prioritization of features is important.
For some, it might be the display resolution, technology, and size. For others, it might be the memory and storage or the cameras. For others, it might be built-in security features.
With the exception of the Galaxy S8 Active, neither manufacturer's products are well-equipped out of the box to use for vertical market applications, so investment in third-party cases will be needed and should factor into the device selection because it will affect basic design characteristics such as size and weight.
We conclude that Samsung has clearly positioned its products as more targeted toward business users, whereas the iPhone is more consumer-targeted. At the high end of the price spectrum, both vendors have equally good consumer and business phones.
However, the differences between the manufacturers are fairly pronounced at the entry level, and at that price point, Samsung shines as a business product over Apple. Why I'm now using Android and might skip the iPhone 8.
